Hiring scooters

We normally get nice new models (mopeds) for volunteers for 100 (normally a months rent) or 90 for longer... These are normally because the kind of people who come to help our charity are normally trustworthy people, so all his friends and family are ok giving us the bikes... But please be aware of the possible risks associated.

Off topic... but just replying... I think the roads can be dangerous here, but I don't think any more so than other places really (once you are aware of the driving conditions) - IT IS VERY different to the UK, but I don't think it's more dangerous...

Be safe!

I agree, and take extra care and view everyone (and thing) as a potential hazzard, permenantly looking at the road for holes etc..

appreciate everyone's concerns,

I have weighed the options and just want to hire at the best prices,

any contacts appreciated Rob,

Hi Mids OT,
Try asking your room boy, waiters, or reception staff at the hotel, they all know somebody that has a bike for hire if they don't have one themselves.
If you don't have any luck at the hotel ask a taxi driver or waiter in your favourite bar/restaurant, most Goans subsidise their income by buying and hiring bikes or scooters, however it is illegal and they will tell you to tell any policeman (should you be stopped), that you have borrowed the bike from a friend!!
Be Safe, GFF xx

I only take my driving licence and have never been asked for it. Motorbikes are roughly 300/350 per day and scooters 150/175 per day. Best to ask around and see the bike/scooter they are offering you ;)

i would get a international licence i have been stopped twice on a scooter and if you havent got on they want some pennys off you ,, the last time i was pulled over i showed my normal license just to test the theory and he was shaking his head, and after a min i went into my camera bag and pulled out the grey card (international licence) as soon as he saw the card he told me to go now without looking at it.
so he wasnt happy lol
it cost me 5.50 pounds to get one so it worked out ok

I just wonder if the IDP is really worth it.

I've hired a scooter for 2 x 2 weeks and only been stopped once. I produced my IDP and he waved me on.

I have heard that the "payment" for not having an IDP is 200rps.

So £5.50 is about 450rps...........so I need to be stopped three times before I lose!

I suppose that the "payment" could be a lot worse ....say 500rps and I get stopped twice but how likely is that?

Just saying.... :que

There is no set "fine"....it depends on how much cash you are carrying...
We got stopped last year on the way back from Siolim....he asked to look at my license, which i showed him...then he asked for papers for the bike, which i showed him...then he informed me it was illegal to ride without a helmet..."you must pay 2000 rupees fine"....he informed me.
I told him that i did not have that amount with me....so he said..."2000 rupee with reciept or 500 without a reciept"....i paid 500, which went straight into his back pocket.
So always carry a couple of hundred rupees in a seperate pocket to your main cash.....

I would prefer to wear a helmet! My head/brains are priceless. Street cred I hear you cry - I prefer to keep my brains intact.

Hi Candybabe....
i too would prefer to wear a helmet, but could not fit one in my case....
Would not dream of wearing one that has been used by various people throughout the season, that are usually on offer when you hire the bike... :que

Correct answer, there are lots of things you can be "fined" for not just scooter related and a small amount of cash in a separate pocket always seems to work. I wouldn't blatantly try to bribe anyone though. The "Very sorry sir, how can we fix this?" answer seems to work from what I've heard bt I can;t ever recall having to do this myself. Have had some issues with smoking though.

Officially you need an IDP AND your UK licence for India. IDP is not valid without your Uk licence.

Having said that I've never bothered with one. We usually just wave, smile, maybe even say hello, but always just keep on moving if we pass a police check point - never known a Goan police man chase after a scooter.
