I've got a metal plate in my shoulder, will this set the metal detectors off?! Should i get a note from my doctor?

They'll just take you to one side for a frisk if you set off the metal detectors. I wouldn't worry about it, it's probably quite common.

Im flying out of Dyce / Abdn on KLM flight number KL1448 to Amsterdam / Schiphol on 16th April, flight is due to arrive in Amsterdam at 19.05hrs, we are then flying on flight number KL877 to Bangkok, due to depart Amsterdam at 20.45.

Now, i plan to check-in for both flights online before i leave home, i assume i will be able to do this? Would i be correct to think that once my bags are checked in at Abdn i wont see then again until Bangkok?? If so this means i wont have to collect them anywhere at Amsterdam?? In which case my other concern is time between flights, we only have 1hr40mins between flights, this was a complete package booked by Hayes & Jarvis so not of my own doing. Assuming flights are all to schedule will this be enough time? I should already have done check-in at home.
Ive never been through Schiphol airport before so have no idea of the layout and hope i can find our way around ok!
Im wondering what would happen if our Abdn flight was delayed causing us to miss our connecting flight?

Now wondering if i should have posted this on the KLM section?! or maybe the Schiphol airport one!!

Anyhow, if anyone could advise that would be great!

When you check-in, you'll be able to check-in for both sectors and print your boarding cards for both. When you check your baggage in at the airport, they will be through-checked to your final destination so no need to collect them or anything. You should be given a map of the airport when you check-in your bags with instructions on connecting. Just follow connections when you get to AMS though, it's straight forward enough. Given you only have 1 hour 40 minutes to connect, go straight to your boarding gate (check the screens when you land for gate number) before looking at any shops it may take an hour or so if things are busy.

So can i clarify, when we land we will not follow everyone else to find our bags, we should just head straight for which ever gate number we need to go to, do we need to go through security and checking again etc??

That's exactly how it should be as long as everything goes to plan! Travelling doesn't have to be hard work! You may find a lot of people are also trasnferring. KLM operate flights worldwide with flights in to AMS being feeders to their route network. A good proportain of passengers are likely to be transferring to worldwide destination, just like yourself. Don't follow others though, they might be going somewhere different to you! Just follow the signs for connections / transfers. You'll find lots of useful information on KLM's website on the procedures. You don't need to check-in again as you'll do that online and when you check your bags in. You'll be through-checked to your fina destination. That's the main advantage of travelling with the same airline or on a codeshare. You'll have to go through a security check when transferring just like you do normaly, but you don't have to check-in or anything. You won't strictly speaking enter the country as you'll remain airside at all times, you won't go landside. When you disembark the aircraft in AMS you'll transfer and end up in the departure lounge. It'll all make sense when you go, just follow the signs and you'll be fine.

We are travelling to Ibiza from BHX on 31 July @ 0620 and are travelleing with an 18 month old. Where do we stand with his buggie. Do we have to put it through with the hold luggage or would we be able to take it with us on the plane. He could probably do with it to sit in whilst indepartures as he will probably go to sleep. Do they have somewhere to store it on the plane once we board. Any help would be appreciated. Have neer travelled with a toddler before. Thanks, Di.

You can keep your buggy until you get to the boarding gate. When you are ready to board the aircraft, it'll be taken from you and loaded in to the hold of the aircraft. It can't be taken in to the cabin as there's nowhere to store it.

Thanks for the quick reply. What about when we get off the plane. Do we collect it from the conveyor belt or will they bring it so we can put him in his buggie when we get off the plane?

It depends on the airport locally, but they'll normally be the first things off the aircraft and can be collected from the luggage conveyor.

Just reading this thread, and just realised that when we booked our tickets for vegas we didnt put my mums middle name on, but obviously her first name and surname are correct. Will this still be ok?

Havent flown for a long time and wouldnt want anything to go wrong!

I never put my OH's middle name on the ticket. There has never been a problem.

Middle names are not a requirement and often it is just the first initial and surname needed for flight ticket.

Thanks for this thread. As you know I've never flown before, so the airline will put their own tag on my bag? Or do I/should I put my own one on? Basic question I know, and I feel silly but just wondering

When you check your bag in, the airline (BA) will put a bar coded tag on your bag that is used by the airport to track the bag and make sure it gets on your flight. A baggage tag will also be placed on your ticket just in case the bag is lost so you have a copy of the bag number. You don't need to put your own tag on unless you want to put something on with your name. If your bag is just like every other, it might make it difficult to identify it on the carousel at your destination airport so a ribbon, piece of tape, name tag, or whatever can think of is worth doing to prevent someone picking up the wrong bag.

Tarry, they are not silly questions. It would be silly if there was something you weren't sure about and DIDN'T ask. Everyone has a first time. Some people fly with their parents for years, but don't pay attention to what is going on so still have questions.
