Phoned Nationwide re the flexaccount. They process the application first then they can let you know what type of card they can offer. I assume that involves a credit score. Also if you do not have any banking with them already you will need to take your id into a local branch to be confirmed. Not sure it's worth the hassle, will have a think about it.
Just to add, after thinking very briefly about applying I went ahead and did it online. To clarify, at the end of the application process it tells you what facilities will be offered (ie debit card and cheque book) and asks if you wish to continue, so I assume as long as you credit score ok you'll get the debit card. Thanks to all for the advice about the card...looks like the best deal by far, just got to hope now I don't lose it!
I know it seems a lot of hassle but the flex account nationwide debit card really is the best. You get the bank rate and not tourist rate so get more foreign currency with it, have had mine for few years now but they only gave me a cashcard at first for 12 months then upgraded it. Don't know if its the same now.
Will do.
(It'd be loads of hassle to change all our stuff over... )
nah. Just open an account with a few quid!
Milly-Molly, if you have a look at application via the link posted earlier you'll see that you have to select one of several options. One of which is to agree to pay in £100 upon receipt of the card, this is what I opted for. Like you I wouldn't go to the hassle of transferring all my banking but am planning on using the Nationwide account just for holiday savings and spends. It looks like the application went through ok, it said I should hear from them within 5 days so will let you know if any problems.
btw, forgot to say that there are no bank charges when using this card abroad at cashpoints either
I switched all my banking from Lloyds/TSB to Nationwide a few years back. It was a bit of a hassle at the time but well worth it to be rid of the money grabbing banks and to have my money handled by a company that actually wishes to provide a service. The holiday benefits were an unexpected bonus. I have a nationwiade Credit card as well and purchases abroad are also commission free and the exchange rate is better than anything you can get elsewhere.
We have just opened our Nationwide account on the recommendation of HT members. Thanks, Guys!
Hi.... my hubby applied on line on Tuesday and he has recived the form today to sign and send back....It says he is getting a debit card and a cheque book.... :tup.....so now i will half spending money between my card and his....I only use mine for holidays....
i opened a nationwide flex account a couple of months back, made it a joint account so at least then we have 2 cards just in case anything happens to 1 of them but im only using this as back up really, i changed my money yesterday to euros and got pretty annoyed at thomsons, i'd been on their site and printed off the voucher that gives you an exclusive rate so i asked what the rate for the day was she said 1.219 so i then asked what is the rate with the voucher and she said 1.219 basically it was just a ploy to get people in their shops so i went to thomas cook instead and got 1.224
that has the Bureau De Change and ask for the VIP rate - which is always
higher than the rate on offer that day.
There's no specifics for this VIP rate, you just have to ask for it to get it.
But I can't remember the name of the place that offers it!
And I can't find the forum/post that told me about it!
We usually take around £300 in the local currency and travellers cheques. This year however, I'll be taking my Nationwide card. I'll probably take my Tesco credit card to pay for any purchases or trips.
You will get a better rate if you use your Nationwide card to pay for purchases or trips as the Tesco card rate will be loaded by about 2.75%.
luci
Milly Molly, could it have been Thomas Cook? I've booked next years holiday through them and they gave me a card for the VIP rate. Not worth much though, only around 1 cent more to the pound than M&S. Will get my initial spends from M&S (if you change £250 you get a £10 voucher) and then use my new Nationwide card Have opened a joint account so we have the security of 2 cards and have also ordered the Abbey Zero credit card as I mentioned in a previous post to use as a backup.
Maybe it was Thomas Cook Nic - I can't remember.
As an example of how good Nationwide is. Last week I paid a $2,331 deposit on a hotel in Chicago using my Nationwide Credit card.. The exchange rate at the time was 1.89 $ to the £. Nationwide exchanged the fee at 1.944 $ to the £ and there were no other charges at all!
Luci - my Nationwide card is a debit not a credit card. I have only just had the Tesco card, and I have 15 months interest free. Also of course I can exchange for holiday vouchers or air miles.
