or reduced cost healthcare. Please note the 'or', as it is not always free.
Does she have a valid EHIC, or was it an old E111 ?
Do you know whether she produced her insurance details at the hospital ?
It is difficult to tell whether she has been treated under the EHIC or under travel insurance, as the €70 charge could be her contribution towards EHIC reciprocal healthcare costs, or it could perhaps be the excess on the insurance policy.
Your daughter should really have made contact with her travel insurer via the emergency number provided, especially if hospital bills and additional flight costs are involved. They may have arranged emergency treatment, made flight bookings for her and covered all expenses. Or perhaps less likely, but depending on costs, they may have told her to pay and submit receipts with her insurance claim. But the important thing at the moment is that they should be told about her injury, treatment and curtailed holiday, all of which are relevant to the policy and any subsequent claim.
I would be surprised and disappointed if the rep did not explain the importance to her of contacting the insurer, so that they could ensure that she was adequately looked after with all costs covered, less any excess on the policy.
Hope all works out okay, please keep us updated.

Hi Joolz ... the EHIC (which replaced the E111) provides free Does she have a valid EHIC, or was it an old E111 ?

Sorry to hear about your daughter, hope she recovers from her injury soon,
Best wishes to you both
Regards Jackie
Our son was also in hospital in Majorca a fews years back. He went on his own and as far as I am aware, the hospital sorted it out with the insurance company and he then just paid the excess when he left.
Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear about your daughter's accident. I hope she will get better soon.
As far as reciprocal medical services is concerned, it is the rule of the country that provides the medical care that is in force. So, it may not necessarily be that just because we have free medical care in UK, other countries may not have a charge (although small) for hospital care.
For example, if you go a GP in Sweden, there is always a charge of around £10 per visit and hospital stays are also charged for at about £10 per day. That is just the rule for the local national insurance cover which applies to anybody whether on EHIC or resident of that country.
Mind you, €70 is probably not an excessive charge for the treatment, whether she had to stay or just received emergency treatment in a hospital.
The main thing is she was well looked after.
My very best wishes for your daughter.

Hi Jools! My dad had a heart attack in Majorca 3 years ago. We informed the insurance company at the time it happened and kept all receipts. When the claim was settled he was reimbursed for everything bar around £50. Hope she's better soon.
Hi Joolz, 70 euros is about £50 which may well be an excess payment, but that does not explain having to pay for flight costs???
Thomsons insurance were in touch with her while she was in hospital and she has to make claim upon return home. Money she paid was ????excess and also had to pay for "Fit to Fly Certificate". Hopefully be able to recoup some of costs. She does hold current E111/EIHC card.
I'll be glad to get her home safe and sound regardless of cost. I'll let you know how we get on with insurance claim.
Thanks again.
Just so people are aware the EHIC doesn't cover you for repatriation - which is basically getting you back home again if you've missed the flights you were originally supposed to do on. Whether this is air ambulance, or a doctor accompanying you/ambulance service etc. This is why you need insurance as well as carrying your card.
She's home safe and sound. Going to GP tonight. When I see the wound I shudder to think how bad it might have been had it been her face or neck. All medical letters in Spanish. Going to contact travel agent just now as advised by Rep.
Glad to hear she is home safely. Just left you a message on Summer Diet regarding the same
catch you soon joolz
Glad she is back safe and sound Joolz. My son required 3 different clinics/hospitals and an ambulance 2 weeks ago whilst in Gran Canaria. Have posted on General Enquiries, Hints and tips - EHIC forum and there is some great input from David the moderator. If she was hospitalised as an inpatient and you had contacted your insurance company, they would have taken over the bills. As an outpatient I had to pay all bills up front. My mum was admitted to hospital in Menorca after a fit and, apart from paying the excess up front, Lloyds took over, even arranging for a wheelchair after the return
Helen - I've just read you post in the EIHC thread. Like your son, ambulance driver just took my daughter to private hospital, wasn't offered choice. On the whole I am glad because she was treated well and so were her friends, all 3 pals were allowed to stay with her both nights.
From what I can gather what she paid at hospital was excess and for Fit to Fly Certificate. Insurance was taken out through travel agent and when I phoned yesterday morning they already knew about it! When I asked how they knew they said someone (??hospital) had been in touch to confirm insurance.
Hope your son is on the mend. Kids eh
Hi Joolz! All my dad's medical discharge papers were in Spanish and I spent hours in Majorca trying to find someone to translate them. I did eventually get it done in a private doctor's office in Santa Ponsa for £10. However his GP at home told him that they would have had it done in this country anyway, so don't worry.
did you see the holidays under cover programe last night .makes you think doesnt it ,,do people really need to stay in or are they all like the hospital showed .. my turkish friend was telling us he fell and sprianed his ankle and was taken to his local hospital where he explaind he was ok and didnt need xrays ,they were trying to give him 6 xrays ,,he told them that if they took them he would not pay ,needless to say they let him out after just an examination xxx jan
No I never saw it Jan. We are still waiting on insurance claim forms coming through.
