We normally use kennels for our springer but he lost a lot of weight last summer when he was there for two weeks. When we went away again in October our daughter moved in for the week to look after him. I booked him in for the weekend last week as we were going to London but I had to cancel at the last minute. I couldn't bear the thought of him pining and not eating. I cheekily asked a work colleague who's husband likes dogs if they could walk him, feed him etc; and they kindly did. I don't know what we will do when it comes to our two week summer holiday again as I think our daughter is going to be away at the same time. Has anyone else experienced their dog losing weight and losing their voice when they have been in kennels?
Val, 21! I have never known a dog live to be 21.You must be doing something right.
Minione..she is 21 on the day after Boxing Day..so she is just past 20 at the minute. She is the oldest dog on the books at the vets and he says she is the oldest dog in the area....
I've never known a dog to live so long either, what breed is she or,more likely ,is she a cross breed as they do tend to be a bit hardier. We lost our English setter,Oscar when he was only 11.Sammy the cat was 19 when he died,we thought he was old.We now have 2 Springer spaniels,Ben,8 who pined really badly when Ozzy died and then we have our latest addition,Alfie who we got to keep Ben company who is 2.They both go into kennels several times a year, and share a run.We 've been using the same kennels for 13 years and are quite friendly with the owners. They look after our dogs well.Anybody in Norfolk wanting recommendations please pm me.
My cat goes to a lovely cattery nearby. I know animals prefer their own home but I only have neighbours to ask and I wouldn't want them to have the responsibility and at least I know he's safe. He sleeps all the time when he's there and wants no fuss or attention at all (well, he is a mummy's boy!) The cattery owner says she wishes they were all like him! I've just got him back after our latest jaunt and he's in and out of the house like a yoyo. Bet he can't wait to get back to his usual mission of murdering the local mouse population!
librarianne, thanks for your post, i have just logged on for a peek of the thread as i have been avoiding thinknig about the dreaded cattery, but i am now feeling much better thanks to you, i know that the most inportant thing is she is safe, warm and fed, and i also know that the couple who run the place will spoil her as they only take a small number of cats at a time for holiday bording, so i know there is nothing to worry about really...il miss her but i will be having a wonderful holiday
