Thats a difficult one Kath.

It depends if we travel as a couple only or with our friends.

A few years ago I would def say "drinks" as the vast majority of our trips were has a foursome.

But more recently we travel more frequently

and therefore has a couple and only ocaissionally with our friends

so in the last 2 years it has been "food"

and next year   ... who knows

I would say food. Two adults, 2 children, lunch and dinner with soft drinks. We are not big drinkers at all so the money isnt spent there. It doesnt go as far as it used to or perhaps Tenerife has just got expensive. :?:

hi wooltonian
when are you going? we haven't been since 2003. has it really gone up that much. i cant remember what we were spending.we had been going every year since 1999 both north and south. although we noticed prices increasing when it changed to the euro it wasn't that much. we were thinking of returning this year but its put me off a bit as we always went sc or bb and ate out twice a day and drank lunchtimes and evenings.if its that expensive we may as well go back to sharm a/i. not thinking of going until june/july so an idea of up to date prices would be great
thanks

hi all, we must be really frugal with our euros as on our 2 week sc holiday, we probly only spend £800 , thats me,hubby and 6yr old daughter, and we think were splashing out !
this includes lunch out, dinner at night , all drinks, the only thing that goes on the old credit card would be car hire , and a couple of excursions.
This is based on maybe the last 2 yrs, alvarve last yr and lanzarote the yr before.
We paid maybe 9 or 10 euros for a main teatime meal for two , and 4 euros for a kids meal, but a lot of the time we asked for an extra plate and our daughter had some of ours ( sounds mean, but she prefered it ! )
drinks, we always found a bar that it was only 1 or 2 euros a pint, but to be honest , that was without entertainment,so we are expecting to budget more for tenerife as we would like to see a bit more caberet acts and i suppose this reflects on drinks prices .

Just out of interest what sort of money do you spend on flights and (i'm assuming) self catering accomodation in addition to this?

..for my own part I tend to book into nice 4 star hotels half board (don't need lunch after big breakfast) ..I know doesn't suit everyone but from what i'm seeing folk spending eating out it looks like the hotel option is the cheap one!

We are the other way round
Its the variety of eating out & also the quality of food especially if you are prepared to be adventurous and away from main resorts it is not always expensive

Flights from glasgow from under £100 to £190 norm £150/£160

Accommodation from £200 upwards depending on quality

Have done the 4/5 star hotels much prefer the freedom of S/C

The wife and I are Hotel dwellers HB FB and occasionally AI.
But Tenerife was always better (more economical) to SC and do your own thing. Alas I didn't find it so this year.
Prices have risen to an extent where costs are equal or more expensive to go SC (if you eat out at all times)
Difficult one.
The only bonus of SC we found was we could, get up when we liked, eat where & when we liked, drink whenever the fancy took us.
I would suggest you read about hotels food comments in Hotel reviews section. As 14 days of buffet can be enough for anyone.

we go on holiday to tenerife two or three times a year,we always take enough for 100 euros per day,,this excludes when we arrive filling the fridge up with goodies and drinks,,we dont do excursions, dont hire a car,we have a taxi from the airport there and back again..also we eat breakfast and decent evening meal in nice restaurants, some expensive some cheap,we drink in the heroes bar next to the guayero hotel in los cris, very inexpensive drinks,,very good food-best steak on the island, graham is a true legend, try his now famous scottish breakfast, huge!!we also drink in the players lounge on las vistas beach front, two for one on cocktails, great view! and we stay out every night till after twelve,or maybe one or two occasionally,,hope this gives you good idea of how much to take,,though really you can take as little or as much as you like, and eat and drink as little or as much as you like,,have done 3 trips in my 20 years going to tenerife....1,the loro park-excellent....2,the eagle park in chayofa-very good, fantastic experience watching the bird show...3,the best of all the gomera trip a must, unforgettable, and thats coming from someone who doesnt do trips!! by the way there are two adults and one 16 year old in our party

We went through around 2 k last year 2 adults and 2 kids, the food was in my opinion reasonably priced,it was the drinks we found dear, around 14 euros for 2 bottles of dorada and 2 cokes,we go to ibiza every year and only pay around 8 euros for the same,so it is more expensive but it isnt stopping us from going again the week after next.

drank most nights in st eugines 3 or 4 entertainers on every night, probably why it was exspensive, also the first bar we tried was the irish fiddler, same price in there, also moonlights same again, dont get me wrong im not tight (yorkshire man)but dont like been robbed,we could have lookes round for cheaper places, actually found 1 place that did 1 euro a pint,it was yellow the same colour as lager, but tasted of another yellow substance i wouldnt like to mention :yuck.so like a lot of people say,ya gets what ya pay for.

I think when me and my (now-ex) missus came to Tenerife, we used to spend on average about €1000 for a week, sometimes we did loads of excursions and sometimes we did none yet we still spent roughly the same, not quite sure how.
