Hoping to Book to go to Luxor for a week in Sept, with boyfriend. I've been before, on a cruise, and got a bit miffed at being herded around the sites by a tour guide who told me alot about the fables of egyptian times, which i'm not interested in, and not alot about the actual ancient egyptians etc, which i am. I'd have liked more time at each site, to wander about freely. So now i'm going back, i'm interested in going to the sites independantly, so Luxor and Karnak Temples, Valley of the kings, the collosei of memnon, the ramasseum, and also possibly Dendera, as i didnt go there previously.
How easy, safe and expensive is it to do independant trips to these places? I'd be especially interested in Dendera, although i would be prepared to do a guided tour to Dendera...if anyone knows anything about them?
thanks in anticipation.
We were in Luxor 2004 and we used a local taxi driver a couple of times for Karnak Temples and Valley of the Queens and Nobles ect, it worked out cheap although obviously agree on the price before hand and watch out for hidden extras. A guide appeared from nowhere at one point and we had a lovely discussion about his fee at which he got a little upset at not getting what he wanted, which we never agreed to in the 1st place!!!
It seemed safe enough and easy to do, although traveling in their taxis you really are traveling at your own risk, I would think insurance is unheard of.....
We also used a local travel company called "Jollies" I think it was called, for the rest of the sites, they were very good and we would recommend them.
go to any of the travel agents outside the winter palace they do all the trips you want they pick you up and drop you off back at your hotel, and they are a reasonable cost
Welcome to the forum!
Both Patkin and Silverscrim are dead right with their comments. We have always used Jolleys Travel which is just to the right of the Winter Palace Hotel, as you look at it from the river. They will provide an egyptologist to accompany you wherever you wish to visit and, as mentioned, will pick you up from your hotel with air conditioned transport. We have yet to throw something at them that they cant do, for an extremely reasonable price. You can literally build your own excursions!
Thanks everyone, thats really helpful!
One thing I forgot to mention was that the Dendera trip used to be available from The Novotel, which is now the Iberotel. They have their own cruise boat which they use to do the trip, which used to be a whole day. Definitely worth doing if it is still available!
