No-one at check-in would mention it because if you do get asked on arrival in Cuba to show your insurance, anyone without any has to buy the one the Cuban's are selling.
I think it was put in place primarily to stop Cuban Americans from going back to Cuba for free health care (or so I read elsewhere).
It is unlikely anyone from the UK will be asked for proof. It won't make any difference to the vast majority of UK tourists as they would have had adequate insurance any way before this latest rule was brought in.
Hi Mdollar
That was a good price. Was it a "special"? I just checked on the LTSB site and they are wanting £114 (inc. 5% online discount) for a couple! And that was without pre-existing medical conditions.I noticed that the cover is provided by AXA who also provide insurance for Thomas Cook.
Flexicover are doing "Silver" cover for £43 & "Gold" cover for £56. I think I would go for the gold as it has a higher level of cover which is comparable to the TC/AXA policy.

Hi David, no it wasn't a "Special" as far as I know. I rang LTSB and this is just what I was quoted when I explained about the pre-existing conditions and the cover was with AXA. My sister and her husband only paid around £49 for Cuba also without any conditions so I think what you were quoted is a bit steep to be honest.
It's been a while since this was brought up! LOL. I ended up going with Flexicover Direct. Got a "Gold" couple policy for £51.17 (inc. admin fee & pre-existing condition) which was less than half of that quoted by Thomas cook and the policy is underwritten by AXA (as is Thomas Cook's!). I could have gotten it even cheaper with getmy.com but I didn't read the wording properly and didn't realise that Cuba came under "rest of the world" as they don't have an "including Caribbean" bit listed.
Best wishes.

Returned from Cuba this morning and nobody asked about insurance, neither in the UK or in Cuba.
Just got back home from the latest trip to Cuba and what do you know? Never got asked for proff of halth insurance at Cuban Immigration after all - none of us did! For the first time ever I got a bug that warranted 2 trips to the International Clinic in Santiago and they weren't bothered either as long as I had the cash on me to pay for the consultation and medication. As this actually totalled only a little more than the £50 excess on my policy I'm not even sure that I'll bother with the hassle of claiming it back from the insurance anyway!
At the end of the day is it really that much of a hassle if someone does ask to see it? Your insurance certificate should be kept with your tickets, passports etc. so it shouldn't be too much of a bother if someone asks to see it.
The main thing is actually having it in the event of something happening.Only a fool would travel abroad without insurance.
David
PS: I just got back from Cuba on Wednesday and no one asked to see mine either!
At the end of the day is it really that much of a hassle if someone does ask to see it?
Of course it isn't but what was a hassle was trying to get HBOS to give me the equivalent of an insurance certificate or cover note because all I had was the booklet that came with my current account detailing my cover but nothing that had my name on it and tied that cover in with me. Despite initially saying that they were familiar with the problem and knew what I needed it actually took them 4 weeks, 3 letters (2 of them containing the wrong thing!) and a fax (also of the wrong letter) before they produced the goods! Having the cover was never the issue - having something that proved I had it was a quite different matter.
My son has is insurance thru' his bank and was happy to tell me that it didn't cost hime anything for his cover to go to Egypt (even tho' he pays extra per month for this type of thing that he doesn't usually need!). I just hope he has a certificate just incase anything happens. Young ones nowadays probably wouldn't think of such things.
Best wishes

We've just done our Travel Insurance with Sainsburys ,price of Worldwide travel for 12 months includeing the 2 of us needing Medical Screening = £200-00p.Medical screening was very easy so by and by we can recommend them and best of all is that they have no connections with the USA which I believe is a requirement of Cuba..Hope this helps someone else out The medical Screening for the 2 of us was -- me:- Asthma,Diabetes, osteo arthritius,High Cholestreol and High blood pressure,,,Wife :- Asthma and Depression..So I think £200 was an excellent price especially since most other company's wanted over £400 for exactly the same thing.I also got a 15% discount with them and double Nectar points ( save towards Christmas shopping )
they have no connections with the USA which I believe is a requirement of Cuba
Absolutely correct!
And don't try to use any debit/credit cards/Travellers Cheques with ANY American connection - (and some of them can be hidden) anywhere in Cuba...
ATB,J.
I have a copy of every part of our travel insurance we have taken out, (overview, terms etc)
Im just wondering what is the process once in Cuba? Is it literally a glance at the documents by the authorites and your away or is it more in depth?
Thanks!
