can i ask a really daft question, i am going to buy our insurance online today for our trip to the cayos 2 weeks toady ( )
is cuba still classed as ''world wide excluding usa and canada''? or does the carribean fall under that very umbrella?
am i better just getting a totally world wide policy inc' usa etc to be safe, even though the company i use (atlas direct) do not mention anything with regards to the carribean being excluded from the non-USA policies...
thank you
As far as I know Cuba is "worldwide inc. the USA,Canada & the Caribbean" with Flexicover Direct but it may change with other companies. When I was in The Dominican two years ago, I had insurance through Thomas Cook and it was the same.As long as the Caribbean is mentioned this should be ok.
By the way, I trawled over a lot of insurance sites and Flexicover Direct was by far the Cheapest.Less than £52 for a couple. If you need to know more, don't hesitate to get in touch.

On my policy it is classed as Worldwide excl. USA and Canada, which is literally as it says. Every country covered accept those two.
I hate to say it but it looks like sunaddict is spot on! Usually when a company states excluding/including the USA etc that this includes the Caribbbean but getMy.com are pretty specific (as sunaddict has said) that this applies to the USA & Canada ONLY and that Cuba is indeed covered under the "everywhere else" brolly.
Just make sure (although it goes without saying) that you get the proper level of cover for your needs.
David
thank you both for your help, it turns out with my particular insurer that cuba is not included with USA and canada-just goes to show it's always worth checking out though, thanks again
Always check the terms and conditions for any travel policy, if you use a price comparison website then they state which countries are covered by certain policies, very simple to use.
I used getmy.com this time (cost £62) for a couple with no excess to pay if I need to claim. Also covered my husbands pre existing conditions (gout & BP).
I was pleased as it was cheaper than the last policy and that had an excess to pay.
before I list existing med. conditions it gives me a quote of £69+ for std cover. So if I look for cover to inc those conditions it must come in at more than £69 - where does £62 come from????? EDIT and if I PUT IN EXCESS WAIVER IT TAKES STD COVER UP TO £82+!!!
I'm really confused by the quotes listed on this thread for getmy.com! If I put in a couple, annual policy, worldwide not inc USA & Canada even
Different ages? Some companies progressively load the premiums as you get older regardless of any pre-existing conditions. My health was exactly the same when I turned 50 it was the day before when I was only 49yrs and 364 days old but you wouldn't think this from the way my premiums started to climb! And even though he was probably fitter and healthier than me, because he was by then turned 70 he always had to pay more than me for identical cover.
It is interesting tho' getmy seems to count Carib destinations as part of the rest of the World - some insurance companies (inc my current insurer) in the Carib with USA/CANADA
When I tried getMy.com it was only for a single trip policy but for annual with no disclosed conditions, I'm also getting it coming in at £69.34 for "standard" cover and £83.24 for "premium".The excess waiver is adding nearly £13 on to each.I don't know how much it would be extra for existing medical conditions but I was quoted £111 originally from Thomas Cook and that was for a single trip policy!
David
PS: Just out of curiosity I tried the getMy.com site again and declaring that we're a couple aged 18-59 and Mrs Bloggs has high blood pressure (due to being married to me!),takes no more than two medications and gave up smoking more than ten years ago and the premiums were exactly the same.I hope this helps.

I tried Flexicover Direct again just to see how much it would be for an annual policy.
It is coming in at £67.28 for their "Silver" policy & £69.83 for their "Gold" policy (both using discount code MN238) based on a couple aged 36-50, declaring an existing medical condition, worldwide inc. the USA,Canada & the Caribbean. These prices include insurance premium tax and an admin fee of £1.50 per person.I didn't see anything regarding an excess waiver.

You must obtain comprehensive travel insurance covering medical expenses before travelling to Cuba. See the General (Insurance) section of this Travel Advice. From 1 May 2010 you will be expected to present your insurance policy on arrival in the country.

I've got an annual insurance with AXA/Llloyds TSB and I simply spoke to them and they sent me confirmation of cover immediately via email.

Basically the letter says that cuba have introduced strict requirements to ensure holidaymakers have an insurance policy with appropriate medical cover and that Random checks will be made on arrival in Cuba so it is essential that you carry your documents in your hand luggage. If you do not have sufficient medical cover then you will be required to purchase a cuban policy on arrival which doesnt cover high risk sports or pre existing medical conditions.
It also reminds me that any policy underwritten by insurance companies of the united states will not be valid in cuba and that if you have purchased TC insurance underwritten by either White Horse or AXA then this is acceptable.
I will be double double checking with insureandgo .
It all appears to be a big none issue unless you are cuban american or an american tourist. The Canadians only have to show their Provincial Health Card.

I think that the issue arose because US companies won't pay over money to the authorities in Cuba for fear of sanctions at home for breaking the US enforced embargo and Cuban hospitals were not being re-imbursed for the expense of treating foreign tourists who were insured with such companies.

Just checking everything is in order with our travel Insurance but before I call them does anyone know if there is a mimimum medical cover amount that we need to be checking for .
Not that I am aware of and no-one that posts on TA and has been to Cuba has been asked to show their insurance. This is not aimed at UK/Canadian tourists, more Cuban Americans and Americans.
Thanks Sunaddict . Just been having a quick browse over there and seems to be a lot of hot air then .
just got back from cuba and was advised by TA that we needed to show proof of travel insurance. nobody on the plane was asked to show this and even when checking in at manchester there was no reference to check you had adequate cover so not sure whether it is something that will change in the future, but certainly over the past two weeks nobody we spoke to who travelled from the uk were asked to provide insurance in cuba to any person.
