That's the major problem with suitcases... It so much easier just to have cheap thin bags as you can take so much more stuff out... A nice canvas bag does the trick and weighs nothing - so many more clothes to take out - or more the point - to bring back!!!!

Just read on another forum that a couple returning home last week had their baggage weighed AND THEIR HAND LUGGAGE together if the combined weight was more than 20 kg they were charged
Over zealous check in staff or another Dabolim airport offficials money box ?

I can imagine this causing an absolute uproar at check-in.

We are usually under our 20 kg limit wherever we happen to be travelling home from but we do have some bits in our hand luggage.
Coming home from Cancun last month, they weighed both our hand and hold luggage together (no idea why, other check-in desks didn't!) and the total was 41.2kg.
The chap said 'Perfect'.

Thomson's new style ticket booklet is very clear about baggage allowance, they say in addition to the allowance shown on tickets they allow a further 5kg for hand luggage.

When we go in February, I'm going to try to make sure I take some sort of documentation relevant to my carrier that makes hand and hold luggage allowances clear.

I'm all for charging excess if people really ARE over their limit, but I'm certainly not going to line the pockets of anybody working at Dabolim airport.

Just checked on my airlines luggage regulation it states

Up to 20KG Hold baggage per person

and

One item of hand baggage per person. Maximum weight of any hand baggage must not exceed 10KG (or total dimensions etc)

It goes on to further state in the same paragraph that

This allowance cannot be combined with your hold baggage allowance.

It seems to me sombody is on the make, it may be wise to check up on your own airlines regulations before travel.

Certainly sounds like another attempt to unofficially relieve us of our hard earned This year there is just me and the Mrs travelling so we will probably have only the 1 case, how much could we put in ?? I doubt it will weigh 40 kg (god forbid :shock:), I will more than likely buy another bag for the return home to put the goodies in.

No wonder the solid plastic cases have come down in price, they are quite heavy when they're empty...

I've just printed off the Luggage FAQ's from the MyTravel site and photocopied the back of the ticket. Both clearly state the luggage allowances for checked and non checked baggage.

Hi feelthevibe better to take a case each because if a case weighs more than 35 or is 37 kilos thats the max a luggage handler will lift at uk airports better to split it up...I always carry info that lets them know hand luggage is seperate . goodluck

As I've said before on this subject, as long as you are sure that they hav'nt their foot on the scales you can take it that the scales are o.k. as the overall weight of luggage is used by the pilot to work out the ammount of fuel required for the trip and any huge discrepencies would be soon noticed. Sometimes I think people are'nt prepared to admit that turning up at the desk with grossly over the limit weight in their suitcases is just plain stupid and playing into the gredy airlines hands. We all know the limit is 20kgs so it's no good bleating when they hit you with the bill Alan

On our return flight from goa 2 weeks ago the check in attendant advised us to put our hand luggage on top of our cases so they could weigh the lot together We werent over so no charge. However, they didnt weigh all the luggage together when we checked in 2 weeks previous at Manchester. Our tour operator was Thomsons.

One thing that you will have with you when you check in will be your tickets! Information regarding hold luggage/hand luggage weights will be somewhere on your tickets, have a look before you check in.

Some poor (rather silly) newbies to Goa shelled out £30 in tips to the baggage boys at the airport These people will probably go home and tell all their friends about how they were ripped off before even getting out of the Airport, just plain stupid of them to do it IMO but imagine flying 10 hours arriving very tired, strange new surroundings, chaos everywhere, I bet there are a few more who have fallen prey to these vultures who won`t admit to being done over on such a scale The Airport must shoulder the blame for this by allowing it to happen inside the airport building. The potential damage this could do to the tourist industry in Goa needs to be looked at by the airport authorities and maybe a manager employed to keep tabs on the lads and nominate one baggage lad per couple at a fixed rate (hard when you have no rupees on arrival). It is a very difficult situation that could do a lot of damage if it is left to fester any longer and needs sorting out very soon

I may be a bit thick here..................

We're trying to book a Mumbai to Goa one way flight (got scheduled flight from Manchester to Mumbai). I've noticed that most of the major ones are spitting out my credit card number, and have read somewhere that the Indian system is not accepting 'foreign' credit cards due to the high amount of dodgy activity on credit cards. Every travel agent I've tried has whopped a huge amount on top of the ticket price, so I'm really reluctant to lose money that way.

Can anyone advise if Air Deccan or others have some sort of alternative method for UK people to book a flight direct? I notice there's only a couple of domestic flight carriers that charge non Indians the same price as Indians, so I'm trying them first (hoping for a bargain).

I'll be very happy to be told I'm wrong and that it's all ok
