Can anyone give me answers to a few questions re Mumbai airport? We're flying via Mumbai for the first time next week and I've worried myself looking at reviews and info on the net:

Can we check in at the International terminal for the domestic flight? We fly down to Goa with Spicejet and the info I've read is confusing, so I'm not sure if I can, or if I have to go to the domestic terminal with my luggage?

Do we have to pay to get into the domestic terminal? Seems very dodgy, but there are lots of comments out on the net about being charged?

What are people's experiences of being 'charged' by airport officials and how should we handle things if we get asked for bribe money?

Any other useul info is also much appreciated :D

Thanks Helen

You need to collect your luggage at the international airport and take it with you to the domestic terminal where you check in for your Goa flight.
As you leave the International airport arrivals , there is a free shuttle bus between airports. ( Takes about 20 min.) You will be hounded by taxi drivers as you leave arrivals but just ignore them and join the shuttle queue.
Hope this helps.

We came back on New Years Eve and were very pleasantly surprised.

There was a sizeable queue to get into the airport as they were checking details so this took us around 30-45 minutes. The check in process took 10 minutes maximum. Immigration was a bit of a pain as they are so slow, and we had to let all the Monarch passengers through first as they were cutting it fine for their flight.

We didn't come across any corruption at all, all the people were really nice and friendly.

It was a nightmare arriving at Dabolim as three flights came in at the same time, ours being delayed by 21 hours from Gatwick didn't help! It took over 2.5hours to get through immigration!

does anyone knowif you can get a flight down to goa once you are in mumbia or have you got to book from the uk and what are the prices like

You can book at the airport (each airline has a window), but there's no guarantee on price or availability.
Because of a cancellation I had to get a Sahara flight in April and it cost £60 one way.
Air Deccan kindly refunded me the £11.50 i'd paid for their cancelled flight.

Its very easy to book a flight once you are in Mumbai. Lots of regulars seem to do it this way.
In my opinion I would avoid Deccan Airways....they have two planes, an Airbus (no problem) and a tiny propeller thing seating about 20 people. I still have nightmares about that return flight, people screamed at full pelt for almost half the journey as we dropped out of the sky and shook violently from side to side. :yikes I call it my 'near death experience' I posted a short report on it back in September. Maybe we were just unlucky!!
Has anyone else had a similar experience with them?

Caught the propellor thing from Goa to Bangalore, then another one onto Cochin. It was actually quite exciting, we had to walk across the tarmac and climb up what was virtually a ladder. Felt like we were getting on a fairground ride rather than a plane.

Had a lot of negative reports about Air Deccan! the price is right but!!! they do tend to cancel flights without notice and can leave you high (or not so high) and dry. No good if you have a tight schedule to keep, like an ongoing International flight. many local agents won't deal or recommend them! :x

I saw a new scam when going in to Dabolim on 24th December. The very last policeman you have to deal with just after the customs officers and before the porters, is the one who collects the slips of paper. In his hand he had a wad of these slips and as I tried to hand my slip to him he opened his palm to show me four of five pound coins. In a low voice he told me "pound, pound". I thanked him nicely and helped myself to one of the coins. Apparently this was wrong and he was looking for me to give him a pound. I told him very politely in my broadest Scots accent what he could do with his pound, gave it back to him and he waved me through.

Anyone else had this happen. It is bad enough with the porters and toilet attendants, but I at least have some sympathy for them, but as for these police, they are nothing but parasites!

cheeky sod!!!! they are getting worse, i would loved to have seen his face when you took the pound coin from his hand :rofl

Curious on deals anyone has got to Goa via Mumbai, It seems daft that I can do it cheaper booking separate flights than a booking via Jet for all 4 flights, any info on Jet flights experience, as it would seem safer to book with one airline as if delayed on first leg you don't have the worries of re booking,

Looking for March

Mids on Tour,
We flew Jet last season from Heathrow. The flights were fine and we were delayed getting to Mumbai and they just put on the next flight to Goa.

In November we flew Virgin to Mumbai then Air India to Goa, both good total cost £380 each. Again flight slight delay (about 40 mins) Air India decided there wasn't enough passengers on the flight we had booked so delayed the previous flight to Goa and transferred us to that. We got to Goa early but everyone else was 40mins late.

On Monday we go with Virgin again £298 to Mumbai then Spicejet to Goa £45.
We leave about 4 hours between flights at Mumbai in case of delays. (It takes about 1 hour to get through customs & transfer to the Domestic airport, there are internal transfer coaches so you don't need to leave the airport complex).
We booked with Virgin on their web site you have to be check the flights carefully as prices can vary by upto £200.
Southall Travel are usually competitive if you cant find a deal online.

Thanks Steve,
Been looking daily and find it strange that Spice Jet is more expensive to book direct rather than through a third party, the prices you got are excellent, did you book the Spicejet direct? last year we used Make my trip for our internal flights. I fancy flying Virgin myself.

Rgds another Steve
