some prices for you that i remember, large bottle of keo from supermarket 90 cents , newspaper 1.1cyp , wine 1,2cyp to about 5cyp. can of coke 50 cents. pint of keo in sandra and most places 1.5cyp.
i found the food very good at the sandra, special salad is recommended. and there is always chips with everything if thats your preference.
i couldn't eat chips every day, i'd pile the pounds on.
Hi Ice and Manic
Ice - yeah we did meet your mother in law and your son - he was playing with our nephew in the small pool
Bet your wedding was lovely the weather was gorgeous werent it
Manic - go to the deli 2 doors down from the Sandra through the day - we didnt have any problem eating this food by the pool neither - they have fresh sandwiches, pies, pasties etc - lovely salad bar and cakes to die for
Jo
LOL @ breaking his door down and being thrown out, although I expect it was not that funny at the time, I have to say I have not seen anything like that happen on any of my hols..
quick look at the currency converter means that a pint of keo is or should be 2.58 euro should they round it up, one does hope that they would round it down but that is not likely to happen
Jo thanks for the deli tip, any chance of some prices, me mrs loved the salads over there last/only time we was there..
anyone know what the moonshine is over there?? i remember getting plied with it in a out of town restuarant.. then total blank
I am liking the sound of protaras more and more, i like things that are catered for the tourists, I know its more expensive but i cant be bothered to go look for the cheaper out of the way places as i am on holiday, i do enough bargain hunting at home lol..
thanks for the replies peeps
regards
manicveg
we were getting three big butties, a couple of bags of crips, a couple of cans of pop and three large cakes think it was averaging on about 12 cyprus pounds quite similar to the prices over here
we had a salad one day and think it was bout the same price - its proper nice in there and the bar across the road from it cheers is good (cheap and cheerful) we were getting a bottle of corona for 1.50 cyprus - way cheaper than here in town
In response to the original posted question...............YES it is too commercialised. I've just got back and found it to be a strip of neon lights with much of a muchness bars and restaurants. Not impressed at all and would certainly never choose to spend a holiday here in the future.

Miss Chief1,this is a wind up surely?
Protaras is actually how Ayia Napa was years ago, except a mini version of it, too many beeping scooters, crowds everywhere and tatty karaoke everywhere with people who think they can sing, nappys sprawn all over the beach at 6pm, disgusting toliets, and a lot more expensive shops than pernera. Of course this is at the height of summer when we have been namely July/August. We have been going to pernera for years and go to the mini golf on the out skirts of protaras which is nice and a good laugh. But i am so glad that when i had my wedding vows renewed we never went to protaras, but had them done at the golden coast in pernera.
I still love the Prot strip. It may be commercialised but its nothing like Napa.
Miss Chief1,this is a wind up surely?
No not a wind up at all, that's exactly what I thought of the place, I hated it, but I can understand why other people enjoy it as it's appealing to some I suppose from a family point of view, just not my cup of tea the same way people regularly visit Blackpool in the UK for cheap weekends and holidays in our school hols.....but again not for me as I despise the place.
Ayia Napa IMO has so much more going for it as it's a very diverse resort being that much larger than Protaras, yes there's the "strip" of Protaras type venue if you want it but there's so much more to Napa with regards eateries and bars of all types depending on what you want, including the beautiful harbour area. Huge choice of beaches too.
I was suprised at Pernera and liked it very much, this is where we stayed and I hope it stays the way it is and doesn't become an extension of Protaras as I think it can survive and thrive without Protaras in it's own right.
I find it strange how folk criticise Protaras yet heap praise on Pernera.Don't get me wrong,Pernera was our first holiday in Cyprus and we liked it so much that we've been back to Cyprus for the last 8 years.Knights bar,Windmills, the Waterloo etc are no better or worse than the karaoke bars in Protaras .I hate karaoke and found it difficult to find a place in Pernera where you can just sit down for a drink and watch the world go by without having to go back to the hotel. This might have changed though as I've not been there for 2 or 3 years.
The thing that annoys me the most about Protaras is that you can't seem to see or get on the beach without walking through hotels. Now this may be OK if you are staying in one of the seafront hotels but it is difficult if you are staying at apartments up on the main road. I much prefer to stay in Pernera as it is quieter and easier to get on the beach, or the far side of Ayia Napa for the same reasons. I like the restaurants in Pernera better as well.
We stayed in Pernera last week in a private villa and we liked what we saw in Pernera, the restaurants are great and yes I take your point about "most" bars being set up for entertainment but there are other options on the fringes, plus Kapparis and Paralimni are just up the road both of which have many traditional bars and eatries too. I was impressed with Pernera and surrounding areas as in the past I've only ever visited during the day and had never stayed here before.
But you couldn't drag me back to Protaras I'm afraid as I'll be giving it a wide berth in future, each to their own though and I know it's a much loved resort by many of the other HolTruths members.
i can definitely confirm that i have never had this illusion but the wannabe in me keeps forcing me to keep writing those slips outtatty karaoke everywhere with people who think they can sing
actually i had my first karoake compliment last year in the zodiac with the gorgeous kezzabelle when we sang a duet together. when we came off the stage i went up to the owner Panacos and asked him " how was that?"
he replied with no word of a lie..... "that's the best pair i've seen all summer!" i've never seen him so excited.
I think Protaras is getting more commercialised each year, and i have been 8 years running. I know a few of the bar owners and they say it is still as busy every year, so people must be coming back. i have never seen nappies on the beach, and there are plenty of ways to the beach without going through the hotels. I go mainly for the beaches, i dont know but i guess there are not many beaches around the med as good as Fig Tree Bay, and i have been to a few. It is all a matter of opinions, but i love the place.
we loved our holiday in protaras this year so much we have just booked to go back only been home 2 weeks.
first time we have booked to go back to the same place twice always try different place every year.
i think maybe because we got married out there we will visit protars many times and i loved it.
we booked this time for the vrissiana hotel 2 adults 1 child half board £1500 27th aug 08 thats a really good price me thinks

i think Protaras can be a bit over commercialised at times specially in July - September weve been back 3 weeks now and my dad who lives over there said its amazing how much its started to go down now the busyness around protaras because its coming to the end of the season now were off again tomorrow so will be able to tell you what it is like at the moment there
Pernera is nicer than Protaras. Don't know how many of you will remember Protaras from years back when Fig Tree Bay was just a bay with one hotel and Pernera was nothing but open fields and windmills with just the Pernera Beach Hotel. We all want quaint little Cypriot villages now! The Cypriots did after all have to start the tourist industry on the east & south eastern side of the island from scratch once Famagusta was taken and they have only provided what was initially demanded by the Brits, English Breakfasts, karaoke, drag acts etc and it is now starting to backfire. Parts of Ayia Napa are actually quite nice, Polis & Laatchi lovely at the moment but it won't be long before they too will start to be over developed unless the Cypriot Government start to sit up and take notice of what is happening on this little gem of an island. The worst let down is Paphos and sorry but I can't find anything nice to say about the place. The coastline and surrounding countryside is lovely and Paphos old town OK but the tourist industry has left Paphos with none of its original character. I still return year after year to the Pernera area - loads of places to find if you hire a car and get away from the tourist traps. Protaras is nothing like Blackpool in the sun - OK it isn't for everyone but it is an ideal base for families who have the job of occupying kids for 2 weeks.
