I don't see that Bangkok will be to affected by Christmas in terms of places being open.

With regard to the beach area I should pre book that as places like Phuket (at least pre tsunami) tend to get very booked up over the Christmas/New Year period(busiest time of the year). There are a lot of different types of accommodation in Thailand, many hotels have two bed/three bedroom suites - the Allamanda in Phuket comes to mind as an example. In Bangkok you might wish to consider serviced apartments - more spacious than hotel rooms yet often with all the facilities of a hotel. On the beach theres usually a whole range of apartments and villas that can be rented.

Re River kwai
it is possible to do this as a day trip- we did. One of the best excursions I have ever done and very moving.

Thanks for the replies. I will certainly look at appartments as we prefer a self catering type of holiday anyway.
Fiona, I'm so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the River Kwai trip as I have been advised by a couple of people that It's not worth doing as it's so commercialised! We still intended to do it, but it's nice to hear positive feedback.

Commercialised? I think they just mean it is popular. When you visit the Jeath Camp you will see photos and read first hand accounts of life then and also drawings.Pinned on the walls are comments from returning ex POWs. The cemetary is such a peaceful, beautifully maintained place. You will not be able to stop shedding a few tears. The Bridge itself is packed with visitors just before the train arrival and to be honest I didn't feel completely safe on it. It is very ricketty and is ok until you meet someone coming in the opposite direction- then someone has to step off the "safe" part of it! I loved the train journey as well and you won't have been on a train quite like this one. It is used by lots of locals as it stops off at small villages along the way. The day trip is long but well worth it.

PS have just uploaded a photo of the Bridge- still in the upload album here
Photos of the cemetary are in the Thailand album here

would definately agree, the river kwai trip,is a must!
the cemetary visit,is definately moving & really makes you stop & think.
you really don't need 3 days, for it though,as it is only a day trip & you do, fit everything in.
don't forget to visit, the grand palace & another trip we enjoyed, was the floating market, well worth visiting.
