Just got a Kindle, will I be able to use it on the plane
Reply
Yes bejay you can use it on the plane. I used mine for the first time on holiday in May it's great I was really pleased with it although mine is an ereader not a kindle but same thing.

I have no plans to buy a kindle but did anyone see the news in the week where they have done a survey and fund that e books now cost more than their paper equivalent?

I suppose it is inevitable really. Technology always claims to be cheaper but ends up costing more. Anyone recall whe they said that CDs would be a fraction of the price of vinyl?

I have a kindle and I haven,t paid for one book yet.
There are so many free ones to choose from I doubt I ever will
I now have 135 books on my kindle, I have a look every day on amazon and just download what catches my eye,a few have been rubbish so I just delete them.
Wouldn't be without it!

I am now the proud owner of a kindle and i absolutely love it !!! I would normally take about 8 books on a 2 week holiday and hubby and daughter always moaned about the amount of space / weight they took up in the case, so an absolute godsend for holidays !! only downloaded 9 books so far, actually love the short stories you can get for free, and I believe I can have a 2 week free trial of daily newspapers, so thats bob on for my 2 week holiday in gran canaria !!

Have had my Kindle for a few months now & love it. Got about 35-40 books on it so far & the most I've paid for a book is about £2.50 or so. All the others have been free or paid less than £1 for them. Virtually goes with me everywhere & will come in handy for the hols. :D Save me dragging the actual paper versions when I go away.

Well i download tracks to my ipod for 99p and i remember when i was a student (16 to 19) spending most lunchtimes in the record shops buying singles for 99p and that was a long time ago. I also remember buying a cd player when they first came out, you almost needed a mortgage to afford one, i never use a cd player now , just my ipod with headphones or the docking station , and from the amount of kindles i saw when on holiday its inevitable that most people will be using them instead of reading paperbacks in only a few years times, the prices will drop and authors will sell more because of the increased convenience of downloading rather than going to a shop.

I hummed and haad for so long about buying a kindle that my OH went out and bought one for me- just last month. I'm so glad he did. I've now got a lot of books to get through- most of them were free. We didn't know what to do with the extra weight we had freed up in our cases! I was quite surprised to note that there seemed to be only one more person round our hotel pool with a kindle. I really thought they would be more popular.
For folks who love travel books- an absolute must read is Danny Bent's You've gone too far this time, Sir! Danny decided on the spur of the moment to cycle from the UK to India, to help teach in a school there. His journey there is fascinating and there are some very funny tales along the way. He raised money for Action Aid.
The main drawback so far in a kindle is that you can't pass on books when you are finished, although I gather this might change.

Passing on books is one of the reasons I've resisted so far. All my family and a number of friends are all avid readers and we do swap books all the time.

I do have the Kindle App on my I phone and I've downloaded a few to that. It's fine for my bus journey to work but couldn't lie in the sun for a few hours with it like I do with a book on holiday ( too much glare) though I understand the Kindles are ok in the sun.

My wife can't read a paperback now she has a Kindle. Lots of advantages, you can leave it in the sun without the glue melting and the pages falling out, you don't have to hold the pages down to stop the wind blowing them, you can read in the sun without any problem and with the 3G version she can bookmark favourite internet pages like the BBC for news headlines, local weather forecast and for me the football scores.
You can share books with other nominated Kindle owners ( I can't remember exactly, someone might correct me but I think each purchased book can be shared 6 times), the downside is the whole family need their own Kindle which is expensive and you can't swop read books around the pool whilst on holiday.
Interesting earlier comment about the battery not being replaceable, I never thought about that but all books purchased would remain on your account so it wouldn't be a case of loosing everything. I guess if the machine lasts 5 years you will want to replace it for the future improved model anyway.. time will tell !
It would be a great thread to recommend good books to read, especially the free and bargain ones !
As for me, I don't read a lot when on holiday, preferring to go wandering with my camera so I will still be donating my books to the hotel library when I do finish them.
cheers Dave

Same happened to me Fiona. I kept saying I'll wait until I go to the UK again as the Kindles are cheaper there, but he went ahead and bought one for me last week.

I've just ordered the book, thanks for the recommendation, I'm looking forward to reading it.

I didn't realise we could share books. Must have a look. Thanks for that :)
Julie
I have always ended up losing pages of books when the glue melts so it was great this year not to worry about it. Also you don't get glare with kindles( unlike laptops).

A thread for recommending kindle downloads would be great. I have been lucky so far in that I've only not liked one of mine.
Judith- just read yours before I posted this- you won't regret your kindle purchase( especially as you didn't pay for it :rofl )

Just had a peep at the conditions for sharing and it appears that all the devices have to be registered , so a family can easily share .
cheers Dave

Not sure if I'm supposed to copy text from the Kindle user guide pages but this is what it says:-

Content purchased from the Kindle Store can be downloaded to your Kindle, Android, iPhone, iPad or iPod touch as long as you have registered the device to the Amazon.co.uk account that purchased the Kindle content. There is no limit to the number of times a title can be downloaded to a registered device, but there may be limits on the number of devices (usually six) that can simultaneously use a single book.

That means you can download and read your books on any Kindle device you own as long you have registered each device to the Amazon.co.uk account where your Kindle library is stored.

You can see the items in your Kindle library under Archived Items on your Kindle and send downloads to your registered Kindle(s) from the "Your Orders" section of the Manage Your Kindle page.
Currently Kindle subscriptions cannot be automatically delivered to the Home Screen of more than one device. You can download your Kindle subscription to another device from the Archived Items on that Kindle if both devices are registered to the same account.

To change delivery options for your Kindle subscription content, visit the Manage Your Kindle Subscriptions Settings page

Thanks Dave
at the moment no-one else in the family has a kindle but when they do it will be useful to share books.

Another great thing about a kindle is that you can access the internet. I checked my emails a few times.

I've got a Kindle - does it charge for internet use Fiona?
Reply
Dave,
My understanding of the above is that I can only share with devices registered to the same Amazon Account as mine, so that doesn't include friends or family who have a different account registration or am I totally misunderstanding it?
Reply
I only used it on wifi areas and there is no charge Glynis.

Cheers Hun x How do you know if there's no charge? Is it displayed in the hotels etc?
