If you decide to visit Cambodia then you must not miss Angkor Wat at Siem Reap. To do it justice you will need at least 3 days to tour the temples, plus a few more days if you also want to visit Phnom Penh.

Depends on how active you are in Thailand so if you really want to relax then perhaps Laos will be more suitable. It would be a shame to travel all that way and not see much.

Thanks Chris on yyour reply. I will keep your comments in mind. We plan to visit either Laos or Cambodia, Bangkok and the beach for a week. The last few years holidays have been spent touring and this year I really need a week just chilling (probably will be bored). Ideal World we would be going for a month.........

Just another possibility to look at from Thailand- what about Vietnam? You can do the touristy bits and then relax at one of the beach resorts. Haven't been yet but the beaches are apparently beautiful!( Going to Saigon next year)
Lluang Prabang is supposedly beginning to change at a rapid pace so if you fancy Laos- sooner rather than later. There is an ongoing post about this on another forum

Fiona, hadn't visited the Fodor's forum before, excellent and Laos covered quite a few times :D

You mentioned you were going to Saigon next year, is that the only place you are visiting in Vietnam? I hope not as Vietnam is a wonderful country and will be going back one day as we missed out so much. Imo I think Hanoi is nicer. Although we did eat out a couple fab restaurants in Saigon and one my husband still raves about - it was French and the service was fantastic.

I hope you have a good trip to Singapore, is it busy or pleasure? We also visited Singapore last year, have you been before?

Re Vietnam- a bit complicated as we have a free flight in to Hong kong and then a return from Bangkok. We don't have the time to do more than Saigon properly, although I am really looking at this as a "taster"!
Singapore is part of my holiday-we are going both on the way to and from Bali. We were in Singapore last summer for 5 days. Love the place( although not as much as Bangkok or Hong Kong!)

Fiona I hope you have a lovely holiday. Like you I like stop over's. How long are you going to Bali for, where are you staying or touring? I have been to Bali and really liked Ubud, we stayed in a wonderfull hotel while there and moved onto the beach - our stop over was Hong Kong. Like you love the place.

Have you booked your hotel in Saigon yet? I think after you have had your initial taster you will want to go back for more. As our honeymoon we didn't do a tour and stayed in really good hotels but still managed to get a good feel for the country.

I have only been to BKK once so really looking forward to get the opportunity to explore again and I bet I will really notice some changes.

Just received the Magic of the Orient brochure so going to imerse myself in that on my journey up to London later today.

Hi, like the sound of both Laos and Cambodia , I have done lots of research on both recently and I have decided to visit Luang Prabang next year, the temples and scenery look awsome and like Fiona said there is certainly going to be a tourist boom.
I am captivated by the scenery of the mekong region and love the style of the french colonial style hotels, I am going to Bangkok, then LP then Ko Phangan followed by KS , probably in choengmon or Bophut area, cannot wait to 'do' LP and I am going to arrange the trip DIY separate flights and accommodation, there is a flight from BKK to LP, from shirleyV
