we are thinking of booking hols to lardos in the cosmos maris hotel but am a bit concerned as it says it is 2.5 km away from the village, it is quite near the beach though and was wondering does ayone know if there are bars and tavernas near the beach or do we have to travel into village for meals at night. Also its quite near the bus stop does anyone know if buses frequent to lindos and does it go to lardos village? any help would be much appreciated.
Or should i go to lindos
Yes there are frequent buses to Lindos during the day (you can see timetable and fare info on http://www.thelindianway.com ).I'm not sure if they go into the village or not but they do go to Pefkos which will give you a wider choice of restaurants, bars, etc.
If you don't want a quiet holiday then yes, you might want to consider Lindos (or Pefkos) but both are easily accesible by bus in the day or by taxi in the evening.
We've just been to Lardos as a big group and some of our friends stayed at the cosmos maris and said it was excellent, and there are bars and tavernas nearby. I cant say about whether buses go anywhere because we had a hire car, but taxi's are cheap, the village is too far to walk though in my opinion. Too far for me anyway!
We were very disapointed by the Lardos area and the beach in particular. It is very rough to walk on and there is no sand at all. It resembles a quarry(!) as it is shingle/dust all the way along.
There are no restaurants or bars as this area is not a resort. There are just a few hotels dotted about in a very desolate area and although we had a fab hire car, we were pulling our hair out by day 4! It is certainly NOT the place for non-drivers.
Lindos would be a better alternative if you don't drive although there is much more life in the resort of Pefkos. This is a nice resort with many restaurants which we felt gave a much higher standard of service than their neighbouring villages.
Wherever you choose, I hope this helps and little and have a great holiday!
Rick.
We stayed in Pefkos between Lindos and Lardos and was very happy with our choice even though Pefkos is a purpose built resort. Had two or three lovely evenings in both Lindos and Lardos although I wouldn't like to have stayed in either!
Got to be the most boring island we have visited, carnt understand anyone going there more than once. Did like Lindos (too hilly for the missus) and visited the village of Lardos for some prawns for bait. Nothing in Lardos resort.
Maybe we should have holidayed in Faliraki but was put off by talk of lager louts and oversexed youths, ahhh well!
Sorry you didn't enjoy Rhodes. What didn't you like about it? Which islands are you comparing it with?
Far better to stay in the resort of Pefkos IMO and then day trip both Lardos and Lindos as and when you please.
I did enjoy the swimming around the rocky outcrops, a glass botomed boat trip and a couple of visits to the Old Town, apart from that, bored out of our brains, her highness wanted to come home after 6 days.
Comparisons? we love the likes of Crete, Kos, Corfu, Zante, as I have said, Lindos was very nice and we really should have plumped for Faliraki, would not recommend Pefkos to anyone other than those who like a quiet, beach holiday.
Hope yer enjoyed yours.
My partner and I have been to Pekfos 4 times now, 4 years in a row. The last time we were there, in May 2006, we got married at St Paul's Bay in Lindos.
Because Pefkos and Lindos are so close together, we spend an equal amount of time in both, although we tend to prefer to stay in Pefkos as it's easier to find accomodation with a pool, and it's always been so hot there (we go in May or September), you really need a pool. The accomodation in Lindos is good, although the ones in the town, although beautiful villas, don't have pools, and although there are places quite close to the centre with pools, youu have to walk up a very steep slope to get home.
Taxis are fab. They are all air conditioned Mercedes, and from Pekfos to Lindos is about 4-5 Euro.
Pefkos is purpose built, but is absolutely charming. It has plenty of little bars and tavernas, and is suitable for families and couples. I wouldn't recommend anyone looking for a 'wild' 18 - 30's style holiday going there as you'll be pretty dissapointed! Anyone looking for a beautiful holiday with plenty to do and pretty (not built up) town - you'll love it! All our wedding guests stayed in Pefkos and they all loved it. We didn't get one complaint.
Also, I'd really like to mention that I got an eye infection and needed to go to the doctor, and I was SO impressed! The doctor and the pharmacist are superb. They speak fluent English and are very very efficient.
Lindos, is just the most beautiful town. It's all narrow cobbled street with charming shops and famous for it's jewellers. There are plenty of bars and restaurants and it is a gorgeous atmosphere.
For anyone looking to get married in Lindos, I haveto say - I've read about the converyor belt comments, and I was concerned about that, but it was nothing because we didn't notice anyone else there at all. If there was anyone else waiting, I certianly didn't see them as they wait a while away, and when we arrived, there wasn't anyone waiting, and we did it in May, the week after the bank holiday!
I wore a lightweight wedding dress (good move on my behalf) and my husband wore trousers, shirt and a waistcoat (no tie). It was beautiful, and we had a great photographer too. When it was finished we all got on a glass botmmoed boat and had a champagne cruise for an hour, which we were able to put our own cd on also, and it was the best thing! We all had a wonderful time.
To be honest though, I have to admit, I don't know the name of the photographer or the guy who runs the boat, as everything was totally taken care of for us!
We used wedding co-ordinators, lindos weddings (lindosweddings.co.uk is their new site), and they were wonderful! They met us in England to go through what we'd like to do, and there was so much to choose from, then kept in touch constantly and were our rock when we arrived at Lindos. It's a couple, Karen & Laurence, who are a very nice couple (in fact, we ended up going for drinks with them a couple of nights as they were so nice). Anyway, they'd arranged everything exactly how we'd asked for it, and were very relaxed so we didn't have a care in the world. We just enjoyed our holiday and turned up at the chapel! They arranged transport to the chapel for us also.
They decorated the reception too, which looked amazing, and they arranged for a band to play in the taverna, who were very very good, and we've recorded the sound since we've got back as they were so good.
Everyone who came were so impressed with them and Karen & Laurence were so chatty to everyone - it was all in all a beautiful relaxing and romantic experience. I'd recommend it to anyone.
I have waffled on, but i can't say enough good things about the place, and our wedding planners.
We will be returning to Lindos & Pefkos, and will be meeting up with Karen & Laurence in the next year or two.
If anyone has any questions about the place or the wedding, please post back, as I'd love to help.
Thanks
AKR
Me and my girlfriend (aged 31 and 25) are thinking of going to Lindos next year. We like a lively resort with plenty of bars and nice restaurants (but not 18-30s), a nice sandy beach and plenty to do. From what I've read on this site and elsewhere it looks like its the sort of resort we would like but I always like to get the opinion of people who have been there and done it.
I am 25 & my husband is 37, and we have been going there for a good few years now.
There are plenty of bars in Lindos, and there is even a nightclub. None of the bars are the kind of 'foam party' style places, but you can find quieter wine bars, or mid range ones, or louder bars depending on what you fancy that night. As for restaurants, I really don't think you can beat the selection. There are bars and restaurants all throughout Lindos, and you can find some stunning ones.
The amount of bars and restaurants shouldn't put you off though, as the village itself is all little winding streets so you don't feel like it's a spoilt place at all. The best part is that although you can get anything you want to eat, you are very much in another country. Everything is still so traditional, and the fabric shops etc spill out onto the streets, there are jewellers, shoe shops (we're not talking Manilo Blahnik though!).
The beaches are wonderful, and there are a few in Lindos, so you have a lot of choice. If you want to be closer to town, the beaches are quite busy though. There is a beatiful place called Vlicha Bay, which is a few kilometres out, and I really wouldn't recommend walking to it (although some do). The hotels there are very nice, and my parents stayed at Lindos Mare, which was lovely. The beach there is very quiet as there are only a few hotels sharing on huge unspoilt beach. The hotels usually run service buses to Lindos though so you wouldn't be stuck. Also, the taxis are cheap enough. You'd be looking at around 4 - 5 euros to get to Lindos or Pefkos.
I would recommend going to Pefkos or Lindos as it has everything it sounds as though you are looking for. It is becoming increasingly popular so your travel agent should also be able to help you.
If you stay in pefkos, I have a tip for you. If your balcony faces the sea, you will have a sunny balcony.
I hope this helps. If you want to know anything else, let me know.
Thanks

Thanks for the info. Definately sounds like our sort of place. We always go self catering so that we can eat out at a different place each evening. Is there any particular accomodation that you would recommend or any apartments you've seen that are in a good location? We don't like to be too central cos we like a good nights sleep after all the eating and drinking but we also don't want to be too far out either. Anything about 10 minutes walk from the centre would be good.
Thanks
Have to say I can't think of anywhere better than Rhodes to go on holiday (well maybe Florida and the parks, but that's a completely different holiday altogether).
Could never goto Faliraki, not my scene, Rhodes Town doesn't look to my liking too, although worth a visit.
Pefkos is really nice, Lardos I can't comment on too much apart from going through it a couple of times, although I have to admit Lindos is my fave, some of the views are stunning and can be laid back, some of the eateries are great and it's great eating on the roof of some cafe/restaurant and looking at the lights of Lindos and the Acropolis.
If someone's looking for the fast life, it might not be their cup of tea, however I find the place special, with obviously a huge part of that being our wedding there last year. Once we're settled down financially we're hoping to get away twice a year, I would like to think one of those visits would be to Lindos.

Rick.
In pefkos, you will get a good night's sleep wherever you go, but you would need to get a taxi to Lindos. Although the taxis are so easy to get, and they're always there so you'd be ok. When we got married this year, we put all our friends in Pefkos, and they all loved it. They have stayed in Chrysanthi (more of a friends on holiday type place - I wouldn't recommend it for a cosy couples holiday).
Finas apartments - a few of my friends stayed there, and it is very quiet, very nice, and a lovely walk by the sea to get there. Everyone raved about it. They all got to look out to sea from their balconies.
Stella Aparthotel - very nice. I stayed there once, and we got an apartment with a separate bedroom, lovely bathroom, and two balconies. It was great but difficult for my husband to carry all the suitcases upstairs as there's a lot of steps (apparently! Didn't worry me too much as I was only carrying myself! Heh heh!). It's quite big though, and a few people had cd players around the pool, and there weren't amy families or older people there. Lots of young 'uns!
Babis - lovely - although we always got lucky and requested room 309, as it's gorgeous (studio apartment), but we talked to others who got a basement room and they hated it. You don't know until you get there.
Lindos - We stayed in a lovely villa (http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/greece/GR48.htm) and although we had to get a taxi to Pefkos or Lindos, it was in the middle so we could go wherever. It was so quiet though, and there's a shop about 1 min's walk. There is a hotel down the road though (with shop attached) called Ville Di Lindos which is lovely, and the owners are so friendly, and they also have a restaurant in case you just want a cozy night 'in'.
The actual villas in Lindos are lovely, but no pools in the centre, and it's usually so hot you'll probably really want one. There are hotels nearby with pools, but it's a bit of a daring wakl down the hill (narrow with taxi drivers almost mowing you down if you venture out too far), and VERY difficult and tiring if the wonderful Greek cocktails take hold of you!
When we go again, we will stay in Pefkos again, and get a taxi to Lindos for a night out, as for us, it is better that way, and we like a busy night in Lindos for a treat, but nice quiet Pefkos for a quiet one. Lindos is so nice during the day too though, so you must go then, and visit the Acropolis (be careful of the edges - there's no barriers and a VERY large drop into the sea via rocks... we saw a kid running toward the edge once and it was terrifying.) It's totally fine though as long as you realise. It's the best place to get stunning views and photos. You can see the chapel in St Paul's Bay where we got married from there too!
Thanks everyone for the info. I'll have to do some searching around and see whos offering the best deals. Think Pefkos may be a little quiet for us though. Having said that I think we would prefer somewhere with a pool which the accomodation in the centre of Lindos won't have. May have to look for somewhere on the outskirts. Decisions to be made!
Sure with any of these you're going to have a hill to climb on your way back but we didn't find it much of an issue - a taxi is only around 5 euros anyway.
Got to agree with marcuschap on this. Krana gives you the best of both worlds. Some very modern apartments, all within easy walking distance of Lindos (Krana hill going up should be tackled at an even pace!) Lindos would be a shame to ignore, there is no where quite like on the island, if not the whole of Greece. Accommodation within the village is getting cheaper and cheaper, thankfully, now that the major tour companies no longer seem to offer rooms there. Although they can be an aquired taste they really can give an authentic Greek flavour to your trip. Many people return year after year with many now arranging their own accommodation. The Lindianway.com is a good starting point for those interested in a DIY trep to Lindos.
