This was our first trip to Las Vegas, had been to the States on several occasions but never Vegas.
We flew direct from Glasgow with Thomas Cook on Wednesday 9 July. Booked flight only and hotel New York, New York thru Ebookers. The Thomas Cook flight starts off in Manchester then onto Glasgow. It was ok for the travellers getting on in Glasgow but I dont fancy being on the flight from Manchester and then stopping off to pick up others. It works out about a 15 hour flight. Also many of the English passengers said they werent advised the flight was coming via Glasgow.
Flight itself was very good, no problems, took off on time and landed a little early. We didnt pay for any inflight meals, mostly because the meals are rubbish (a lot of the times) and we had taken sandwiches and snacks from Marks & Spencer on board with us but we were issued with a meal and snacks anyway I ordered bar service 3 times and on each occasion got charged a different price by the trolley dolly ....
The heat when we arrived in Vegas was unreal - 110 degrees and we arrived at 11.30am (local time). We piled into the taxi, told the driver where we were staying and advised him "No tunnel, No tunnel" (as people on HT told me to do - thanks!) he was very pleasant and advised he would never take anyone who was staying at NYNY via the tunnel. Less than 10 minutes later we arrived at our hotel - fantastic - first impressions I thought I was in New York City Taxi fare cost $13, very reasonable I think.
A bit of a queue at check in, took about 15/20 minutes. We got offered a room on floor 30 but it was a smoking room and we didnt want that so we opted for a room in the Chrysler building on floor 32 with a view overlooking the strip (we paid a little extra with ebookers for this). There is massive construction work going on in the lobby/check in area at the hotel, and the noise from the drilling was horrendous. The whole area is sealed off and there is no entry. Its very noisy in the America Restaurant next the work, but other than that you dont hear a thing. The construction work starts about 9ish and is finished for 4pm.
We went up to our room and what a view of the strip! Magnificent!!! We dumped our luggage and decided it was time for a bit of an explore. Wandered round the NYNY, its a fabulous hotel and a lot of work has gone into making it resemble the actual city itself. We stopped off in the hotel pizza parlour and had a large slice of pizza each and a couple of diet cokes. Think it cost approx. $10 or thereabouts. We walked across the walkway/bridge and into the MGM Hotel 0 -massive - and looks fantastic inside, the hotels are overwhelming and all the themes are superb. We had a walk outside just nearby to our hotel just to see what was what. We were extremely tired and returned to the hotel and a visit to the Haagan Daas ice cream shop - its a must, fantastic ice cream - yum! It was probably about 4ish and we went back to our room for a lie down for a couple of hours and then unpack.
Bed in our room was fantastic - so comfy - lay down and woke up again about 10pm still absolutely shattered, fell asleep again, woke up at 1.30am (local time), full of beans and wide awake Anyway we stayed in bed. I watched 2 movies - Bridget Jones the Edge of Reason and Corrina, Corrina (never heard of 2nd film, but it was smashing). Fell asleep again and got up about 7ish to unpack and shower and go for breakfast.
I think the time difference is quite difficult when you are going to a country and the time difference is behind the UK, and 8 hours is quite a bit I think.
Well its now Thursday and we need to start getting into Las Vegas ASAP!!!!
I will do more of the report tomorrow. Ive had tons to do since returning from holiday and we are having work done in the house as well, so its all systems go!
Our trip lasted for 7 days so I will do a day each day, hope that is ok with everyone and hope I dont bore you all too much
Gemma, many thanks for taking the time to post
Brilliant!! You know how much I have been dying to read your trip report so I'm just delighted. Thanks so much for posting!
Will do some more later today
Great start Gemma keep it coming leaving on Thursday for our USA holiday
Here goes, next bit ....
Day 2 Thursday 10 July - Up and ready very early and down in the hotel lobby for 8am. Since it was our first time to Las Vegas we decided to eat in the hotel the first day. We went into restaurant America in our hotel. The building work had already started but we sat in one of the booths at the very back and the noise was minimal. We both had massive big breakfasts cos the last thing we had eaten was our Haagan Daas ice cream the day before about 4pm. OH had a sort of big British type breakfast and I settled for sunny side up eggs with ham, it came with lots of toast. We got 2 teas, 2 orange and 2 water. The bill came to $36. We didnt know if this was cheap or expensive as it was our first meal.
Ventured out and it was very, very hot again. 108 degrees today. I wanted to pop into one of the local shops for an American adaptor, but could I get one - NO - it was impossible. I was in the 24 hour shop Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy and all the little "touristy" shops along the strip and couldnt get one for love nor money. We walked along as far as Planet Hollywood because someone in one of the little shops said we might get one in there Anyway walking a lot in 110 degrees heat is not advisable and although the hotels are only for one block to the next, the blocks are massive and take forever to walk to :que. We were always constantly pestered by timeshare touts, offering free shows, gambling money etc if you would come look at a timeshare apartment. After a day or two we got wise to this and knew how to dodge them.
In the morning we done lots of walking about and some shopping, no American plug, but not to bother. In the afternoon we decided to chill out by the pool. We arrived at the hotel pool to be advised that the pool was closed all day for some kind of maintenance work. We were told we were welcome to use the pool at the MGM Grand and just to show our key card. Walked over to the MGM. Beautiful hotel but their direction signs I think are very bad, its like being in a crystal maze and its virtually impossible to find anything! Eventually found the pool, or should I say pools, massive and fantastic. Very busy but we still managed to find two beds. Collected our towels, ordered a drink and proceeded to lie out, but not a chance in hell, it was just too hot and the humidity was almost unbearable. We spent most of the time in the pool, sitting at the side chatting cos it was too hot to lie and sunbathe. We popped up to the pool side restaurant and ordered two gorgeous burgers with cheese and fries, soft drinks, water etc and I think the bill was $37. Burgers were massive, I couldnt finish mine, restaurant was immaculate and service very good.
We headed back to our room about 5ish, absolutely drained from the heat and very tired because in the UK it was now 1am. Had a couple of hours sleep then we went to one of the hotel restaurants for a drink and meal. We decided on Nine fine Irishmen. I meant to say we were going to go to the Irish pub/restaurant on our first night but we fell asleep and didnt get anywhere at all Really nice menu - beautiful home made soup and beautiful shepherds pie and an amazing sweet which consisted of butterscotch ice cream, caramel sauce and fresh cream. The cheque for the whole evening came to about $70 odd dollars. The Irish bar had a group on stage and a dancer, very good entertainment and the pub was busy the whole time we were there.
About midnight and time for some sleep now .....
there are 6 of us going with thomas cook and staying in New York, New York for 7 nights in March - keep them coming cos i'm getting excited already!
Loving it so far. Keep it coming!
ready for our Friday flight to Miami loving your report and wishing Las Vegas was
our first stop, our 5th visit and still get a buzz
Ann
2 x hearty breakfasts at America in NYNY
2 Cheeseburger and fries meals at the MGM pool restaurant
and
Soup, Shepherds Pie and a Butterscotch Ice Cream dessert at Nine Fine in NY NY
Now that's why I love the USA so much
Great reports Gemma. Keep em coming.....
Enjoying it very much so far. Looking forward to the next installment.
Sounding good so far! You seem to have enjoyed up to this point.
Day 3 Friday 11 July - This morning we decided to have breakfast at the buffet in the hotel one up from us, The Excalibur. Before we went a friend said they done a mean breakfast so we thought we'd give it a try for ourselves. Buffet was $11.99 each and what a choice! Fantastic!
All the usual stuff, all sorts of eggs, bacon (why do they only have streaky bacon?), sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms etc. Also lots of cold meats, cheeses, yogurts, fruits, cereal and a Mexican hot and cold plate and yummy pancakes with all sorts of toppings.
They also had the most fantastic yummy cappuccino - vanilla flavour, I know it sounds a bit sickly but it was delightful.
We decided the best way to get about was on the monorail. We didnt know anything about costs or exactly where to get on. We knew boarding was somewhere at the MGM. As I mentioned earlier I dont think the directions are well posted in the MGM so up until yesterday we werent sure how and where to get on the monorail. But on our ventures the previous day looking for the pool at the MGM we came across the Monorail. The Monorail is $5 for one trip, regardless of how many stops you are on for. We opted for the 3 day pass which was $28 per person this was for unlimited travel. The monorail starts at the MGM Hotel and goes to the other end of the Strip - along to the Sahara Hotel. Very frequent service, about every 5 minutes and from the MGM to the Sahara takes about 15 minutes. They are very clean and tidy and in the evening there is security at every station. The monorail runs from 7am-3am.
The only thing was the walk to get to the monorail, from our hotel it was about a 15 minute walk and because each stop on the little train services several hotels, it can also be a long walk when you disembark.
We went along to the Las Vegas Hilton for a walk about. We were considering going to the Star Trek convention in the Hilton but it was quite expensive, £49.95 each. I am not a Star Trek fan, infact ive never watched it so we didnt go in. Went into the Casino instead and had a wander round about.
Tonight we opted for a show called Legends at the Imperial Palace. The show is a live, on-stage recreation of the performances of a select group of superstars from the past and present. The acts were Elvis, Dusty Springfield (Dusty is an English girl who won the BBC TV programme 'The Only and Only') , an American country and Western star sorry dont remember his name cos dont know who he is but he was quite good, Tina Turner and the Blues Brother and Jay Leno introducing the acts. Fabulous show. Cost of the show was $33 each. We bought the tickets in day from one of the booths in the street who slash the prices because you are buying them in day. I think the correct price is about $50 each. Before the show we went to Harrah's hotel which is next door to the IP and we opted for their evening buffet which was priced at $16.99 per person. Back to our hotel for a little bit of time at the casino and then time for bed.

I love Flavors buffet at Harrah's. We had one of our best dinners there, but the following night it wasn't quite so good.
Also really like Legends. It's a good show for the money and the entrance price includes a cocktail.
Gemma, you could have got 1/2 price tickets for the Star Trek Experience from one of the booths. The exhibit is due to close later in the year.

We did visit the casino in the hotel (and a few others) on a daily basis and gambled a little each time, but nothing to write home about. I dont gamble at all at home (that probably sounds strange considering we were in Las Vegas ) so it was more the thrill of playing the machines just simply because we were in Las Vegas I think
People ask me if I gamble at home. I've never been inside a casino in the UK, never bought a scratch card and have only been to bingo once! However when I'm in Vegas..............

When I have finished the report I will post some photos in the gallery and do a hotel report.
I must admit to not being a huge fan of buffets but Vegas hotels do a pretty good job. The MGM breakfast buffet last year was lovely, although I am told the Dinner is one to miss due to price and averageness.
Luci, on the subject of the Star Trek Experience someone who just came back has said that they are no longer showing 2 for 1 at the Ticket booths for the attraction. There is $10 off per person in the Whats On magazine. I was hoping for 2 for 1's in a few weeks time as the price has always put me off, here's hoping it was just a one off that they were not included at the booths.
Roll on Friday week for our journey down to Heathrow.
we are the other end of the strip Hilton Grand Vacation Club ,think its next to the
Hilton Hotel, 1 Day to go
ann
Ann have a fantastic holiday and a safe journey. I will catch up with you back in here again or in the Goa forum, take care xx
