The Euro seems to be in freefall compared to the pound. If you are in London, near Victoria, the best rate I have found anywhere is from

Here are some prices we paid on our recent trip. For tapas i can recommend Bar Rosa, opposite Guardia Civil HQ.8 euros for a ration 1.50 for a tapas.El Cine,Los Cristianos, 12 prawns.enough mini chicken drumsticks for two, canary potatoes for two, a bottle of wine 30 euros.
If self catering forget the Gran Via if down that end, do your weeks shopping in supermarket Carolina. Situated in Los Cristianos, opposite side to Hotel Reveron its easy to miss, there is a small bar, same name Carolina. Its where the locals shop.

Just back from Los Christianos - we changed our money a couple of weeks ago and got a Euro for £1.01. I did see slightly better rates in Tenerife, if you shop around.

Does make a lot of things expensive in Tenerife for UK visitors though - a local beer tended to be around 2 Euros a pint, but in some restaurants did find I was charged 3.75 Euros! Basically £3.78 for a local beer!

If the pound doesnt recover then it would put me off going back for a while ( I love Tenerife ) as it costs so much for food/drink. I can go long haul and would cost less in all.

I am contemplating booking a fortnights holiday in PDLA mid-May for me and my partner, but quite worried about the cost of things over there. To save some money we are thinking of going half board (we usually go self catering) so all we may need to spend whilst there is on drinks and an afternoon snack. I just wondered what the prices were like for these types of things?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately it is quite expensive. I went there over New Year and for the first time, I found that I was actually paying more out there than I would back home. Of course our worthless currency played a part in that, but the supermarkets seemed really expensive anyway. I went to buy an average pizza from a supermarket, and it had 99p on the box (obviously imported), but it cost 6,30 Euros. Even a 'meal' from McDonalds was costing around 6-7 Euros, which is 6-7 pounds these days.

I spent around 400 Euros while out there for a week, although that does include a few nights out in Veronicas. I would recommend going Half Board, it's almost certainly going to be better value for money, unless the value of the Euro collapses overnight.

Thanks alot mate! That's enough to convince me not to bother with Tenerife this year. Might look at the Greek Islands instead - hope they're better value.

hi price over xmas and newyear are all ways more than other times we go twice a year in november and again in feb you can get a chinnese buffet for 7 to 8 euros eat as muh as you like other places you can get a 3 course meal for 8 euros it all depends on where you go and if you like to go top entertainment bars then you will pay a lot more
tenerife is a great place

Hi crazygoog, yeah steview is right but like botty said it does all depend on where you go in tenerife and what sort of lifestyle you lead, we ussualy eat in for dinner then at night time eat out, but if you shop in the tourist supermarkets the the price is going to be higher.

Tenerife is awonderfull place and can be expensive but i think a lot of it is to do witht eh euro rate, once the rate is higher i think prices will drop, but thats just my opinion.

If you can get a cheaper holiday, i.e. flights and hotel then you can put the rest towards spending money and enjoy tenerife.

The Canaries I have noticed are getting greedier over the years. 20 years ago it was a destination with real value for money. However a lot of the latest increase is due to the Euro exchange rate so I doubt you will get much better value in the Greek Islands, although there like in tenerife if you get off the main toursit strips value for money can be found.

Kind Regards

Just got back from a weeks holiday in Las Americas on Friday. It was our first visit but we found it really expensive. We ate in our apartment for breakfast and lunch, only eating out for dinner, we went to the Monkey Zoo and Siam Park (both brilliant!) and other than that just sat on the beach but still ended up spending £600 between two of us. I won't be returning!

Hi Ya Hamster,

Magno is a cheap spanish brandy, in a local bar in Los Cristianos two drinks exactly the same 5.70€

You being in the licenced trade would'nt think that the price I reported was too bad, sorry but I still think it expensive.

Don't forget the exchange rate has not effected the other nations, just us, down to 99 one day, it's made a massive difference.

Thanks for that Laura. I really do fancy going to Las Americas but i'm really glad you have come up trumps with valuable information. I think i'll leave it this year and hope the pound gets strong again to make Tenerife a decent value holiday destination. I don't know if Majorca will be any cheaper but I think we are on the verge of booking an All Inclusive hotel in Palma Nova. Cheaper AI than any in Las Americas, and maybe the prices around the resort will be better too.

Thanks again forum - every year you help me out. Really don't know what i'd do without you good good people. Happy 2009 all.

My parents have just been for a month over xmas and new year, they said it made you more aware of the prices, that you tend to compere more, but they didn't allow it to spoil there time away, they ate in a little more than they usually would and the exchange rate wouldn't deter them from going again. However it as to be appreciated that some people, especially families have a budget to work to.It has to be said though that if anyone should choose a country to holiday in that as adopted the euro then you will see a notable difference. On the positive side it is quite possible that the pound will strengthen against the euro in the coming months. (lets hope so)
