Hi Beccafcr,

Like your parents we were in Los Cristianos just before Christmas and found things price wise very much like the UK, like your parents we ate in more, We were more choosy where we ate and drank and there is still good value but as I highlighted in an earlier post for a round of drinks tourist style 11€ in a local bar 5.70€ with rates as they are a big difference, but the big differences in price for the same thing has always exsisted in Spain it is so easy to throw your money away. It has'nt put us off going again and we are eagerly awaiting the winter flight prices.

We were in Tenerife for Christmas & New Year and noticed that the prices were either the same as the UK or more expensive. For example a Remy Martin in Little Italy (Capri) Fanabe was 8.50 Euros. My king prawn starter was 11.50 Euros. This is much more expensive than the UK, although the cognac was a double.

We have not been for four years and we thought that the quality of food had gone down. When we started going for Christmas/New Year in 1992 the food quality was excellent, especially the meat. Not any more. The best place we found was in Los Abrigos (Los Abrigos Fish Restaurant) at the end of the quay. We had fresh locally caught fish, langoustines, large mixed salad, canarian potatos plus wine and beer for 46 Euros. Another one we thought good was Marios, Costa Adeje.

We were charged 5.80 Euros for a gin & tonic at the Blue Marlin, Porto Colon. We noticed that if you asked for Gordons or Bombay Sapphire you only got gin up to the first ice cube in all bars. This used to be up to the third ice cube the last time we were there in 2004.

New Year's Eve at El Molino Blanco (windmill restaurant) was 98 Euros + tax per person. This did include some drinks

The collapse of sterling has definitely made a difference. :(

We go to Tenerife every year and have just returned last week. My husband was having a full english breakfast with tea/coffee and orange juice for under 3 euros. Many places still have a pint of lager for 1 euro. We went to Cyprus last year, but found that it was definately more expensive. We will be going to Tenerife again this year, as we still found it very reasonable.

Gamberz gang, we see your poiny but like i said on a other thread it all depends on your lifestyle and where you chhose to eat and drink, if you like the bars offering a pint for 1 euro then thats great but if you dont then your left witht he bars which have increased the prices.

This isnt me being snobby just that we tend to find the bars offering cheap pints to be english and we tend to stay away

We returned last week and we found the prices were the most expensive we have experianced in the last 12 years of going.
I know the pound-euro problem but it seemed they had raised prices also.
I am not a lover of fully inclusive but i think this would be the way to go.

2 X toasties 1 portion fries 1 x soft drink 12 euros

2 tuna salads 2 x rolls 1 x soft drink 19 euros

1/2 chicken & chips average 6 - 7 euros

bowl soup average 5 - 6 euros

i know we can all hunt around and find cheaper but this was from average front beach premises.

Supermarkets didn't fair much better crisps 2.60 euros bag Pringles 2.30 tub

Organised trip 1/2 day tiede mountain tour 39 euro each
dolphin and whale boat trips 22 euros eac

i still enjoyed our holiday but you just cut your cloth to suit your requirements

i honestly cant believe people are increasing prices???????? despite the increased prices from our suppliers, we havent raised a thing..... and the places i frequent (to drink or to eat) havent either......... i find it the same here as a few years ago... i understand the euro/pound causes problems for holiday makers, but for the likes of me who are resident here i cant see much change anywhere

Lets start nameing value for money places?

Only noticed the difference in the exchange rate, the places we frequented hadn't put prices up, certainly didn't notice it.Supermarkets however are another story, stick to Mercadona or Trebol for example and it shouldn't be to bad compared to complex supermarkets.I don't believe Tenerife will be any more expensive than any other country who have adopted the Euro, people tend to forget that we have had a good run with the rate of exchange, even today its almost 1.12 on trade rates,I have no doubt it will improve again in the future

Hi.
barrydavies2.
Trouble with naming places is. We all like different places, otherwise one place would be full to brimming.
Some wouldn't enjoy the plush 5* eating/watering holes, whereas others would cringe at a formica table and a moped stored in the corner.
Whatever floats your boat, enjoy, you are on holiday in Tenerife.

Tenerife 2003, I quite agree, it depends on your lifestyle and where you choose to eat and drink. I still think on the whole prices are reasonable, it's just the pound/euro. We ate out every night in good restaurants, enjoying good food and good wine at prices that are cheaper than at home, but could still enjoy one afternoon drink in the sun for 1 euro.

I got talking to a sales assistant yesterday about holidays and mainly about prices and how she was frightened to book due to job insecurities etc. She said that her friend had just come back from Tenerife and a loaf of bread was costing the equivalent of £3 in a (presumably tourist ) supermarket.

Surely there has been a misunderstanding and this just cant be right ?

REMEMBER WHEN THE € was 60 cents making it £1.80 (still sounds high, but possible) as you know its now equivalent to a £1, so £3 for bread...I'd do without and have TOAST ;) ;)

1 to 1.5 euro for a loaf depending on size and brand. British brands are obviously more expensive.

I don't think bars or restaurants are increasing prices either.

Examples of value for money establishments, North & South bar on Las Vistas beach, toasty with chips and pint or soft drink 5.50 euro.
The Bistro restaurant in Los Cristianos has recently introduced a 7 euro for a main course menu and as a result is packed. Well worth a visit.
