This not a criticism of Le Bistro as all restuarants with high rents and staff to pay have big mark ups on wine but I feel that the 14.00 euros asked for a bottle of Torres Sangre Toro at 14 euros which was available in Mercadona or Trebol at 3.75€ in December highlights how close to home prices in Tenerife have become. I am sure there many examples from all over the world similar, and I will be castigated by a few shortly for expressing this view. but food for thought?.

Just an observation, Torres Sangre de Toro is 12 euros on The Bistro wine list, are we talking about the same restaurant here? I notice you call it 'Le Bistro', which sounds a bit French to me and the restaurant next door is the Le Bistro D'Alain.

Mark-up on wine is something that bugs me too but then restaurants do have to make a living. Not being anything like an expert on wine, I always buy the 'house', which in The Bistro is 9 euros a bottle and very drinkable, this seems a very reasonable price to me. We recently had a meal in The Bistro, 2 starters, 2 mains from the new 7 euro menu and 2 puddings with a bottle of house white, total 45 euros. This was for a very good quality meal in an excellent restaurant and would have cost 50% more for the equivalent in the UK.

:whoops again sorry the price taken from the link on your previous post The Bistro?

Try Spanish restaurents like the Maryjul (not sure of the spelling) near the police station) menu of the day 5.5 euros.
Canarian soup (full after that) Tuna steak (2) with cararian or chips and a lot of salad. Fresh fruit salad and a glass of wine or beer.
You have to look.
One pub doing beer and wine for a euro all day till closing, that`s on the Apollo Centre.

I have heard a lot of rumours about how expensive Tenerife has become.

We always go self catering as we do not like to be tied down.

What is the current price of an average pint of lager ?

This is a good guide to prices to compare....

6.20 for a beer and a bacardi and coke! Good grief, there are plenty of good bars where I could get these for 3.50 euro.

that was the price when we went a walk and popped into the "retreat" and that's why we never went back :(

yes we got €1 beer & 1.25 but not everywhere and not in the entertainment pubs at night:wave:

I seem to recall that we went into the Miners Retreat. Once!

I don't mind paying a bit extra if bars have entertainment on, they have to pay the performers after all.

Cyberhiker: Would you like to name the bars you can get a Bacardi and Coke and a beer for 3.50? :que

On the otherside of the Apollo Centre on the right hand side of the cut through the middle is a bar thats beer for a euro and a wine for a euro, not just day but all evening as well (can`t remember it`s name but a big sign up advertising these prices) It`s on the cold side of the centre though, never gets the sun after mid morning.

That sounds like Zi-Zi's bar (spelling) Rodz, I was going to mention that too. In fact, most in the Apolo Centre are good prices, Raffles, The Shires, Leo's Bar/Tasca el Jaleo etc.

ok I'm used to drinking pints and the last few years away have thought it fine to pay up to 3 euros for a pint. Am I likely to get a pint in Tenerife in most places for 3 euros or less? (when I say pint I mean 500ml) Or can it be more. I'm talking about local beer like San Miguel etc.
Reply
generally only tankards are 500ml....others are pints..... anyway..... we charge 2euro a pint of dorada all day/night...... some places you will pay up to 3.50, but also places are doing happy hour during the day, where you will pick up a pint for a euro if your lucky!
