Nice one Luci.
Looks like you are doing well on the goldfish but when I tried it at Ellis Island it fleeced me out of $100 in no time
Hoping you get a big win and you will have to let me into the secret with the casino host and what he can do for you.
I was gambling maybe up to $400 a day so maybe I could have had a litlle help from him

Wed, 30 April 2008: Woke at 6, but went back to sleep till 7.45. A long lie at last. Went downstairs and gambled. Went to the MGM buffet, $14.50, which was quite good, but I hardly ate anything just a bit of smoked salmon and a pancake. Charged it to our room as we have a $25 dining credit with the room package.
Gambled some more then went up to the room as I am still suffering with swollen ankles. Headed toward Tix4Tonight to get tickets for the Beatles tribute Fab Four Mania at the Sahara. Spotted Tickets2Nite on the way there and popped in to see what they had. Was surprised to see Carrot Top listed as we were told he was on vacation for a month. Bought 2 tickets at $34.50 each with a $2 off coupon. Checked Tix4Tonight and they also had it listed, but it was sold out. Went over to the Luxor to exchange the voucher for tickets. Went back to the Excalibur and gambled for a while. Didn't do well at all. Lost $60 and only got one bonus round and that was on a couple of different machines. Only had 2 free drinks to show for it. Back to the MGM to get ready.
I only took a pair of really loose sandals and a pair of dressy flip flops and then I bought the Mary Jane's. Couldn't get any of them on as my feet were so swollen and they were covered in cuts where the Mary Jane's had dug in last night. Here I was dressed smartly for the show and there was nothing else for it but to wear my CROCS! Thank goodness they weren't a bright colour, but even the pale gold didn't go with my outfit. Just as well I'm not vain or I would never have left the room.
Went to the Luxor and gambled for a while. Turned $20 into $80 on a Hot Hot Penny machine, but put most of it back in. Enjoyed it though. Went to see Carrot Top at 8 and it was a good show, quite funny. Went to the Sherwood Forrest Cafe at the Excalibur and had the $7 New York steak special which was really good value for money. It's not on the menu, but we saw it advertised on some posters. With one beer and an iced water the bill was just over $16 for 2.
Went back to the MGM and had our 2 free cocktails at the West Wing Bar, $12 each which we charged to the room. Gambled for a while. We were going to check our comps, but the Player's Club desk closed at midnight.
Just for the record, a photocopy of my passport has been accepted as photo ID everywhere including using my credit card in shops and ticket booths and for changing travellers cheques when required. It was even accepted at the MGM when charging stuff to the room. The only time in 8 trips to Vegas it has been refuse it at check in at Caesars Palace and for joining Harrah's player's club. I have changed travellers cheques at the IP and wasn't asked for ID but was at Binion's.
Updated my blog, spent some time on the internet and went to bed at 2am.

Thurs, 1 May 2008: Woke around 8, hubby packed the cases and we've already managed to fill the extra holdall we took. Called down to get a late check out till 12 and we have to check out at the front desk to get the free night taken off the bill.
I asked if we had any comps and was put through to Casino Marketing. They said I had enough for 2 buffets or breakfast at the Studio Cafe. I said I would think about which one to choose and they said I would have to call back for them to set it up.
Went to CVS for cigarettes, $35 for 200 Marlboro Lights. Went to the Player's Club desk to set up our comps for the Studio Cafe and they said I only had enough for one buffet or one breakfast! If you snooze, you lose. She said I would still have $16 after that so don't know how that worked. I wasn't hungry anyway so we went to the Studio Cafe. Hubby had the T-bone steak and eggs at $20.99, I just had coffee and toast. Still think it's an expensive place for a coffee shop. Pancakes were $11 (less than $6 at Denny's), coffee was $3.50 and orange juice was $5.25 ($2.20 at Denny's).
Back to the room and spent an hour on the internet. Only waited a couple of mins at check out. Taking the free night, $25 dining credit and 2 free cocktails off the bill it worked out at $40 or £20/night, bargain!
Got a taxi to the IP, $7.90 so gave him $10 and he seemed happy, which is more than I can say for previous taxi drivers in Vegas. Checked in and our room was ready which was a boost seeing as check in is between 4 and 6. Got the same room as last week, 215 poolside, and we were in there by 12.30. Quickly unpacked and hubby went to the pool.
Went down and gambled. Turned $20 into $103, played for over 2 hours and cashed out at $75 on a Goldfish machine. Moved to a Quick Hits machine and broke even.
Got ready to go out at night. Managed to get my sandals on with a bit of a struggle as my feet were very swollen again. We had booked Bally's Steakhouse at Tix4Tonight where a $3.00 pp fee gets you 50% off an entree. We gambled for 10 mins or so and still arrived a little early and were seated right away. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Hubby had the clam chowder $9, I had the 8oz Petite Filet Mignon $36 and hubby had the 20oz bone-in rib eye $40. We had sides of fries, veg and onion rings at $7 each With a glass of wine, a beer and 2 coffees the bills was $130 less the $38 plus tax and tip. The glass of wine was $13! We tipped on the total amount before the discount was taken off. It was a very good meal in a lovely atmosphere and the service was great.
Back to the IP and gambled on Hot Hot Penny, doubled my money. Cocktail service was good, but we didn't have a drink. Back to the room. Will leave a note for the maid in the morning to ask for extra pillows as there are only 3 fairly flat ones on the bed.

Luci- have you tried wearing the proper flight socks? I used to have awful problems with feet swelling but not anymore. They dont look wonderful on but they do the job.
Re swollen feet you need to raise your feet above your heart Luci (now there's a sight people would pay to see )
Thanks for the tip re flight socks. I wore them on the flight over, but never thought to wear them here. Now that will be a sight to see, yucky cream coloured flights socks AND Crocs! How cool will knee high socks look with my shorts!? People will think I'm Japanese!
husband wears them after 20mile training runs- but only inside the house Have to admit that I meant I wear them on the flight and it stopped me from having heaps of shoes on holiday- some for the begiinning and some for when my feet were back to normal. It doesn't seem to work for you though.
I have been sleeping with my feet raised on a pillow, but has only helped a little.
Did I mention that drinks are free while you're gambling? Even if it's just the Penny Slots, you can order anything you like such as beer, wine, spirits, soft drinks and coffee. All that's expected is a $1 a drink tip. You can get blootered for next to nothing if you wanted.

Just want to say that I am really enjoying reading your blog Luci and hope you have had a nice birthday.
Fri, 2 May 2008: Woke 8ish, not very hungry after the big meal last night. Went to the Food Court at the Venetian and had the Xpress Breakfast at $9.95 - there was a choice of things, but we had frittata, breakfast potatoes, sausages and pancakes with coffee. There was a breakfast at another outlet for only$5.25 for egg, potatoes, bacon and coffee. Gambled in the Venetian on Goldfish and did OK.
Went to Tix4Tonight at the Fashion Show Mall. There was a huge queue outside, but we went right to the front with the VIP pass they give you when you buy tickets. It also gives you $2.00 off the service charge. We were between the comedian George Wallace at the Flamingo and the Fab Four at the Sahara. Decided on the Fab Four and 2 tickets were $59.
Had a look in Macy's, but didn't buy anything and quite fancied a pair of trainers in Skechers, however I bought a pair 3 years ago from there and haven't worn them yet. We wondered if there may be any sales tomorrow for the Kentucky Derby as last year hubby got a really nice $1000 wool suit from Bernini in the Forum Shops for only $200 on Derby Day.
Wandered through the Palazzo and Venetian then back to the IP. Gambled for an hour or so on Goldfish and broke even. Back to the room at 1pm and the maid still hadn't been even though we'd put up the card on the door to make up the room. We were really lucky yesterday that the room was ready the back of 12.
Hubby went to the pool and I update my blog. The internet access at the IP seems much slower than last weekend. Did a speed test and it was only 0.5 Mb.
Went to Casino Royale. Started well on a Wolf Run machine then lost. Hubby did well though and won 1600, 3050 and 1350 credits. We were a bit peckish and spotted a Panda Express next to Casino Royale so both had the 2 entrees and a side for $6.60 each.
Got ready to go out at night. Bought a 6 ride ticket for the monorail for $20 and went to the Sahara. Exchanged our voucher for tickets then gambled for an hour. I broke even, hubby was up. Got good seats for the Fab Four, 8 rows back in the centre. It's a very good show and Paul and George especially look like the real thing. This is the 4th time we've seen it and I highly recommend it if you like Beatles music. When it was at the V Theatre it was about 1h 15m, this show was 1h 30m.
Decided to attempt the Sahara buffet as it was only $6.99 with a Club Sahara player's card instead of $12.99. We knew it wasn't a great buffet, but neither of us were very hungry with eating late afternoon. The clam chowder was excellent, the prime rib so-so and the ham was good. We found enough to eat, but there are far better buffets out there and I certainly wouldn't make a special trip for it. Took the monorail back to the IP, hubby went to gamble and I went back to the room.

Sat, 3 May 2008: Hubby had to wake me at 8.30. Neither of us hungry so decided to go back to the Venetian Food Court. We had one Xpress breakfast between us as I only wanted the pancakes. Gambled at the Venetian and lost $20 on Goldfish between 2 different machines. Played Mr Cashman and broke even. Good cocktail service. Wandered through the Palazzo and went to the Fashion Show Mall. Looked at Tix4Tonight, but there was nothing we fancied we hadn't seen before on previous visits. I had wanted to see George Wallace at the Flamingo, but the show doesn't start till 10 and I would probably sleep through it.
I got 2 pairs of trainers from Skechers at $50 and $55. Got $10 off each pair with a coupon in their magazine if you have a receipt from a previous purchase and I had bought my Mary Jane's at the Outlets. Also got denim shorts and a nice top from Macy's.
Wandered back and it was quite hot (for me), in the low to mid 80's. Gambled at Casino Royale. Lost $20 on Wolf Run without so much as a bonus round. Moved to a Monopoly machine and doubled my money so broke even overall. Cocktail service excellent and the waitress remembered us from yesterday and was really nice and friendly. Listened to the band at Carnival Court and had an ice cream sundae from Ghiradelli's. Back to the IP and lost on both Hot Hot Penny and Goldfish.
Hubby tried to put a bet on the Kentucky Derby, but the computers had been down since before 7.30. They were down for the whole of the Strip so a lot of potential bets lost and a bit of a disaster for a gambling town. He finally managed to put one on around 2pm although there was a massive queue.
Went to Harrah's buffet for dinner, $23.99 less a $5 coupon on checking in to the IP. It was very good - clam chowder and a couple of other soups, smoked salmon, oysters, scallops, shrimp (prawns), crab legs, prime rib, turkey, ham, chicken, various Chinese dishes, loads of gorgeous desserts including Banana Foster and carrot cake. Service was excellent too. The buffet includes all your non-alcoholic drinks and you can pay for alcohol on top. I like that Harrah's give you a coffee pot rather than keep refilling your coffee mug.
Wandered through the Forum Shops then gambled at Caesars for a while. Cocktail service was good. Crossed to O'Shea's and it was heaving. There was a girl handing out 2 for 1 coupons for Vinnie Favorito, a comedian, as we went in so decided to go to the 9.30 show. One ticket was $39.95 + tax so I expected to pay around $43 for 2. However the 2 tickets were $51 and I've no idea how they came to that. The show lasted 1h 5m and was really funny and very non-pc. He picked on people from the audience, but everyone took it in good fun.
Gambled again on Life of Luxury at O'Shea's. Put in $10, got a win of 4050 credits ($40.50) without even getting a bonus round and cashed out at $45. Only saw cocktail waitresses serving the tables and not the machines. Moved to IP and gambled on Hot Hot Penny. Turned $10 into $35 and moved to a Goldfish machine, played for ages, moved to Monopoly and cashed out at $40. Cocktail service good. Called it a night about midnight then went on the internet for an hour.

Sun, 4 May 2008: Set the alarm to wake early as I was getting later and later. Hubby packed for our move to the Palazzo. Neither of us hungry so went to Burger King at the back of O'Shea's for something light. Gambled there and lost, hubby broke even.
Bought a phone card from the machine in O'Shea's for $5, called the UK and the message said we had 12 mins so good value compared with £1.10/min from the mobile.
Back to the IP and gambled. Checked our comps and they were a lot less with Harrah's than we used to get when the IP was independent. Back to the room, hubby went to the pool and I went on the internet. Had a late check out till 12.
There was a fair sized queue for taxis, but no taxis available. Finally got one after about 15 mins. Fare to Palazzo was $8.30 plus tip.
Check in at the Palazzo was a zoo with people checking in and checking out in the same scrum. There were members of staff directing people to the desk, but it didn't look good for a 5* hotel. We were seen within about 10-15 mins. We had booked a Deluxe Suite and were offered one or two beds. The 2 bed one is a Bella Suite and is normally an extra $30 a night, but we only wanted a 1 bed. The girl offered us a complimentary upgrade to a strip view room which was ready, but it was non-smoking so we declined. We were told it would be 1-3 hours until our suite was ready and they took my mobile number so they could call when it was ready. Checked our bags with the bell boy who was in the check in area. He said our bags would be delivered to the room.
Gambled on Goldfish for a while and eventually lost, but cocktail service was good. Connected to the free internet access in the lobby and surfed for a while. Went to check in and got blank keys so we could access the pool which is on the 3rd floor. The pool area is beautiful and in front of the hotel. It was very windy there so not sure if that is due to the location as it wasn't forecast to be windy.
The Palazzo is 50 floors high and along with the Venetian makes up the largest hotel resort in the world with 7000 rooms.
Sat at the pool till 3.30 then went back to check in. The room still wasn't ready after 3 hours. Expressed our disappointment and went back to the casino to sit it out. So far the impression of the Palazzo isn't a good one. Back to check in at 4.15, asked the clerk to call housekeeping for an update. It was obvious from the call that the room we had been assigned was already occupied. The call to say the room was ready was never going to happen. Asked to see a manager and waited almost 10 mins for one to appear. He said we could have a Hospitality Suite on the 3rd floor with a bed that pulled down from the wall. He said a request for a smoking room was only a request and was not guaranteed. Fair enough, but you'd think there would be at least one available after 4 hours considering the hotel has 3000 rooms. We refused this as, even though it was a bigger suite, a lower floor seemed like a downgrade after waiting 4 hours. We finally agreed to accept a non-smoking room as we had tickets to a show which we were going to miss at this rate and were allocated Room 808 on the 49th floor which was a Fortuna Suite at 940 sq ft and bigger than their standard suite at 720 sq ft. They didn't even offer to comp us anything which I expect is because the room was pre-paid via Priceline, but I suppose the upgraded suite was a comp. There was another guy in the same situation, waiting for a smoking room, and he cancelled his booking and went to the Wynn.
Got to the suite and WOW! It was huge! Much bigger than the standard Venetian suite. The L-shaped seating area converts into a bed, there was a dining table and chairs, another small sitting area and coffee table, the bedroom was round a corner and there was a desk complete with printer/fax machine and a walk in wardrobe. The bathroom was huge with his and hers sinks, deep bath, separate shower and toilet. Nice toiletries and 2 robes and slippers. There were 3 flat screen TV's including one in the bathroom. The one in the bathroom is in a stupid place as you can only watch it while standing at the sinks and not from the bath. Electrically operated curtains and blinds. Minus points were that one of the bedside lights didn't work and the mini bar was missing. The bell boy arrived within 20 mins and said that floors 48-50 had just opened and we were probably the first people to stay in the suite. There was also no ice machine on our floor as it hadn't been installed yet. There wasn't a spare socket near the desk for the laptop so we had to unplug the printer or the light. The shower pressure was really weak, but the bath sheet was massive and very soft.
Stop Press! The famous 99c shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate downtown has today been doubled in price to $1.99. It was first introduced in 1959 at 50c and went up to 99c 17 years ago.
We quickly got ready for the Jersey Boys show at 7. It was a good show and the sound was excellent. It lasted 2h 10m with an 8 min break. It was quite a big theatre and was almost at capacity. The tickets for mezzanine level were $70.70 each inc $8 service charge.
Went to The Buffet at TI and it wasn't great, $56 inc tax for 2 and it wasn't worth it. The prime rib was a bit tough, and I just didn't think much of the selection. It's the first time we've been, but we won't be back. Headed back to the Palazzo via the Venetian, but didn't feel inclined to donate any more money to them. The hassle with the room has really put a dampner on the day and what was supposed to be the highlight of the trip has been a horrible experience. We feel we have been treated abysmally and instead of going the extra mile to accommodate us as guests they have instead treated us with disdain and a couldn't care less attitude.

Enjoyed your update. Shame about Palazzo service - sounds like they really haven't got it together yet. I'd still like to stay there though if it comes up on priceline for my dates in September.
Enjoying reading that you like my favourite wee dive - Casino Royale. Have you played craps there? Westin Casuarina on Flamingo road east (walkable) also used to be good for craps sun-thurs they did $40 for $25 chips too! I think they had dollar or maybe it was $2 craps.
Thanks for your trip report Ive been reading and your post about the phone card has made me register and post this!
As you obviously have your laptop with you, have you looked into using Skype its very very cheap at £0.01 a minute to the UK from the US and vice versa, you can dial out to normal phones mobiles etc and even better if the other person has skype rather than calling a fixed/mobile line you can just call that and its completely free
Thanks for your trip report
We are heading out on the 27th for 2 weeks
Staying in 4 hotels
Mandalay Bay
Excalibar (widescreen room the gf really fancys staying here so using it to make the weekend cheap)
MGM
TI
Know some people dont like moving about we do as feel the hotels are like theme parks and its well worth moving about as its easier enough to live in 2 suitcases
Cant wait
I'm curious about this skype. Not for holidays but wondering if I could use it from home to call mobiles in the UK?
hxxp://skype.com/intl/en-gb/prices/ (I can't post links yet so replace the xx with tt)
I use it everyday and have used to to call work contacts on the East and West coast of the US, Italy, India and Australia all have had perfect call quality apart from a couple of calls to India
Skype to Skype calls for free(assuming you negate the price of your broadband) are obviously the best!
Luci - whereabouts in theatre did you sit and where they good seats- thanks
I've had a quick look at Skype, but don't really understand it. It seems you do it via your pc, but I can't work out how you "talk" to people. Might have a proper look once the jetlag has worn off in a few days.

Which show do you mean? If you mean the Jersey Boys, we were on the Mezzanine level right in the centre, 3 rows back. There is the main floor, orchestra level then mezzanine level.
The view was fine for us, but we never pay for the more expensive seats. The main floor would have a great view, but a lot more expensive.
Just got back less than 2 hours ago, been up over 24 hours and feeling very woozy.

We're going to Vegas for a few days next year so expect a few questions once we're in the planning stages....
I remember a few years ago in Vancouver airport on the way to Vegas calling the wife in the UK on my laptop and I had some strange looks as it had never been heard of then
