We had the very problem last year with my daughter who was one month away from being 2 years old. She didnt have a seat and therefore no luggage allowance. I had a nightmare as at that time, she needed more than we did (nappies, wipes, extra clothes etc). We managed and its surprising how much you really need when you go on holiday. I was ruthless (I halved my husband's clothes and kept mine the same  seriously though, you have to be really strict). By only taking enough nappies for 5 days and buying them in resort (the own brand rather than a named version - saved over 5 euros), you save quite a bit of weight (I also took them out of the packet and threw them in the suitcases wherever there was a gap). I cant comment on milk because my daughter was drinking cows milk. We didnt see any powdered milk whilst we were away but I am sure it depends where you are going.

It does help if you are travelling in a large group. We were having a family holiday and there was 10 of us altogether and we checked our luggage in together. Having said that, because I packed so well, my luggage was under the 40kg limit (2 adults) and my sister who had a 60kg allowance (2 adults and 1 child) was over by about 5kgs. Im sure it will be ok.

i am sure we will manage something also.. it is a big family holiday for all of us lot too to celebrate various family milestones and it is baby Ruby's first ever holiday abroad so we don't want to leave her at the airport!!

I think we will be able to manage to divide her posessions up between us..
having said that, i may just book an extra bit of luggage allowance for her as i have to ring up about getting Rob's scuba diving stuff on the plane and also Ruby's pushchair..so i think i may buy an allowance of say 10kg..

Val
Folding pushchairs and wheelchairs do not count as part of your luggage allowance and Thomsonfly do NOT charge.

The scuba diving stuff....
You must organise this in advance by contacting Thomson (Tel: 0870 1900 737)

cheers sanjii, at this present moment tho there is a distinct possibility that Rob may not be taking any clothes at all other than his wet suit as he has so far done absolutely nowt about organising anything except say to me
" when are you planning to sort the holiday stuff?" to which i could quite happily throttle him..and as for the boy...well, 14 year old lads just don't think like that do they :?

We had this very challenge last summer. We were going to a friends' house in the south of France for 3 weeks so we had 3 weeks worth of bedding, towels, etc as well as clothes for 4 of us, 2 car seats and a buggy but only 3 luggage allowances. Fortunately, the buggy and car seats were carried free and not included in the luggage allowance but our then 19 month old needed as much in the way of clothes etc as we did.

EEE bye gum, how do you "young uns" think us "old uns" managed.? :rofl

Disposable nappies? Nah! we had to take terry towelling nappies and wash them in the sink or let them soak in the bath overnight with some soap powder....then peg them out on the balcony washing line first thing in the morning to make sure they would be dry.
The terry nappies themselves would take up half a case, plus the beach towels.
Disposable nappies had not long been on the market and the chances of buying them in the resort were remote and they cost far more than we could afford anyway.

Even baby clothes can be slushed in the sink and it is surprising that if you make yourself manage, just how much you can adapt when the need arises.
Unless they have been sick or had an "accident" then babies clothes don't really get dirty....as in filthy !

It is a problem, but it is a lesson that stands you in good stead for later in life.....Now, I must have cut the amount of clothes that I pack, down by half.
I used to take all the "gear" including matching jewellery, but now I leave the rubies, emeralds and sapphires at home in the safe and wear my diamond engagement ring only, with some cheap costume jewellery that imitates diamonds....It matches everything and I'm not going to shed a tear if I lose it (apart from the engagement ring)

Mix N match is the name of the game  and decant the contents of large bottles into small ones...just enough to last you the holiday, then bin them.

Packing shoes was always a nightmare, now I take one pair for walking, one pair of flip-flops for the beach and one pair for evenings......so I only pack one pair in actual fact that is troublesome, (the flip-flops take up no room and can be squeezed in anywhere) and I usually travel in the walking shoes/trainers.

Years ago if you had suggested that I manage with wearing one pair of shoes at night for a whole fortnight, then I'd have said "no way"
I always think that if I get cheesed off with the shoes, I can always go shopping to buy another pair half way through the holiday.

It makes sense girls  especially when the hubby says" how many more pairs of shoes do you want in the bottom of the wardrobe" ?

Answer: just one more pair honey, because I left the other pairs at home to make room for all your cr@p in the suitcase. :rofl

Slightly :offtop Forgive me, its my age, but I cant imagine life with terry nappies    I remember my sisters (twins) being small and mum choosing the terry nappies for the cheaper option and I can still visulise the endless washing piles, the bucket on the stove boiling away and learning to fold "kites". I just - again sorry - didnt have the time for it when my daughter was born.

As for packing. It is amazing how you adapt. This year even with my daughter having a full luggage allowance I managed to be well under the 60kg we were allowed. I realised the previous year that you dont need to take endless amounts of clothes, six pairs of shoes and a different swimming costume for every day. I still had a panic attack at being over the limit mind you, but thats just me. (And I like the idea of being to bring home some duty free so that helps).

you young mums make me laugh one and a half dozen (18 if you don't understand) of good quality terry nappies last years with care of washing they work out many times cheaper than disposables, therefore more Eco friendly and a dame site more use when finished with for floor cloths car washing etc .. now own up how many of you could fold and place a Nappie on a baby without the use of adhesives or pins and still have it stay in place..

answers on a postcard to.........

Wizard.

You are so right and I admit that using disposable nappies is the worst thing to do but, what can I say   . Its lazy but so much more convenient. I dont know if I could keep the terry nappy in place without pins, but I was a dab hand at folding them and putting them on my sisters' when they were babies. There is 9 years between me and them so I was old enough that I had to learn and help my mum. As I said above, I still remember the huge wash every morning, the smell of boiling nappies and rows and rows of white nappies on the line every day. What memories :)

i remember terry towelling nappies.. butof course by the time i had kids, they were virtually aboloished. I still had them but i used them as bibs and wipes and stuff...and i was definitely a terrys baby myself..

thanks tho wizard for calling me a young mum  or did you not mean me....

i have been onto thomsonfly and everything is sorted. It cost £30 for the diving stuff...

I've never used terry nappies but both my girls wore cloth. The older one wore all in ones which were like a disposable except you washed it instead of disposing of it and the younger one wore all in ones and prefolds. The prefolds are now in a box while I decide whether to e-bay them, give them to someone or use them as super thick cloths.

Val,
You scared me with the 'separate suitcases' line!

This is fine in theory (I always used to pack his and hers suitcases!) but when 'your' suitcase doesn't come on the baggage reclaim belt and 'his' does and you end up borrowing his t-shirts and undies for 4 days until the airline finds your bag you may rethink your packing plans. I now pack equally and split everyone's underwear, toiletries, even books into separate cases so at least I'll have half of my clothes if this ever happens again. Be warned!
