i got the £1-00 set from pound land, tested against my expensive spring balance and they weigh exactly the same and the pound land ones are lighter to carry,

I put mine in the hand baggage so that if there was a dispute I had the scales available.
Don't know what the situation would be if you had ones with a metal hook.

hi thanks for your replies, just wondered because of them being digital, could just take the batteries out i suppose.
hi stevebell, maybe it's ryanair's scales that are out, trying to get people to pay for excesses - no ryan air wouldn't do that would they lol ;) - dotty

i have bought a set of the poundland ones and will definately be taking them with me this year because last year we went to zante and where 10kilos under on the way out (between 5 of us) but leaving zante they reckoned we where 11 kilos over cost us a fortune but when we got back home and weighed the cases we where actually 15 kilos under was not impressed

I have bought the scales for piece of mind on way back from hols. I noticed the other day Wilkinsons sell them now .I'm sure they were under £5 .Which is very cheap.

The digital ones I bought before I went to Goa were great as we were on a 15kg flight so I went out with 12kgs , bought a few pressies and came back on exactly 15kgs, I got them off ebay for about £8

The Lakeland ones registered 21.6kg at home and on check in 21.3kg. Better than the other way round I suppose.

The Balanzza 2009 Ergo set that I bought from the Balanzza.co.UK website exhibits some strange behaviour.
The scales "weigh" differently depending on who is doing the weighing.
If I weigh a case it registers higher than if my wife weighs the same case and is consistently different.
When my daughters took the scales with them they noticed the same thing depending on which one of them weighed the cases.

It must be something to do with the handle but although I asked the balanzza UK salesman, who had earlier responded to my pre sales queries via the website, to comment on my findings and also the fact that the scales also registered lower than Ryanair, all I ever received was an email "read" notification. I even forwarded the "email read notification" to the salesman after a month of nothing pointing out that I knew the email had been read and I was still waiting for answers. My only response was a new email "read" notification a couple of days later. At no point have they tried to converse with me, gather more info, or indeed state that the set I have is faulty etc. Nothing. Excellent customer service!
I have given them plenty of time to respond in case I did have a faulty set, however being ignored is another matter and may indicate that there are design issues.

I therefore withdraw my earlier recommendation for the 2009 Ergo model, which for the more expensive price now seems to be little more effective than a rough guide.
The previous model, available from everywhere else, with the different handle must be a better bet and cheaper too.

This one from Lakeland is a Balanzza. Black with a green handle and buttons.

I've just seen that Nectar have Salter luggage scales for 4,000 points. They look similar to the Balanza ones which I've got but slightly smaller.

I know that a few folk have bought/used these previously as a GUIDE to baggage weights

In case anyone is interested, in TJ Hughes today (Coventry - but presumably nationwide) they had a basket containing spring loaded baggage scales (portable enough for travel) at a reduced price of £2.99 (usually £9.99, reduced to £4.99 and now further reduced) . They were in the homewares section of my local store.

Can't comment on accuracy or anything else - but seemed a good price

Thanks will have a look, need some rather than strggling to weigh the case on the bathroom scales.

They are great, best thing we ever bought in this age of strict baggage weights, especially when you only get 15kgs on some long haul for 2 weeks !!
We took ours with us and on the morning we were leaving, I had a queue of people wanting to use them !!
Now, if only I'd thought to charge 5 dollars a go............................... :rofl

I've just bought some from TJ Hughes (they have a tape measure built in). Reduced from £4.99 to £2.99 - hope they fair better than the Salter ones (heavy duty) I bought off Ebay last year which broke the first time I lifted one of our suitcases before the return journey!!!! Nightmare!
