Hi, Could anyone tell me what the weather will be like roughly in the 1st week of september? Checked a few websites and there quoting around 24degrees which i thought seemed a little cool for crete? But maybe im wrong.
Also has anyone been to malia? do you know how expensive it is there for drinks, meals, snacks etc?
Many Thanks Tamara
depends when in september.. you can say that at the beginning of the month it can still touch 30 although usualy around 28 early afternoon cooling down for the evening, as you get towards the end of the month it coul stii hit 30 BUT 24/26 is more to be expected
thanks for that information
As for prices, well it is 2 years since we went to Malia again (our first visit for 10 years) and I doubt much would have changed pricewise, but obviously you won't be getting so much value due to the Euro exchange rates. Large domestic beers (by domestic I include the likes of Amstel and Heiniken in with Mythos) were 3euros pretty much standard throughout the resort, smaller beers were 2-2.5 euros. Imported beers were 3.5-4.5 euros. Bottles were around 3euros, sometimes these were the larger variety of bottles especially away from the main strip which provided better value i.e. 500ml for 3euros.
Cocktails were always on offer but be prepared for some serious dilution. You can sometimes get 3 (or even 4) cocktails for the price of 1 (around 5-8euros) but I have to question just how much alcohol is in these, especially as I never felt affected at all after a couple of "on offer" cocktails. I can't comment on spirits because we don't drink these very often and certainly not abroad, ditto alcopops.
As for meals, well I found it good value but this was 2007 not 2009. Most main meals we had were around 6-9 euros (pizza, pasta, souvlaki etc) and probably at the higher end of that scale for your more non traditional meals which us Brits seem to enjoy so much i.e. roast dinners(!). To be fair, the Red Lion Pub & Restaurant on the strip does very tasty "English" style cooking, i.e. the sort of stuff you could order at a Brewers Fayre but it is unbeliveably rammed with big groups of youngsters. I'm not against a meal or two in a place like this, but surely the point of going to Greece is to sample at least some of the local food? Maybe I'm just getting older......
In saying that, we did have two excellent meals at Gringos Mexican whilst we were there. Great food, beers and excellent staff. Highly recommended, but certainly hovering around the 10euro mark and over for main courses, so similar prices to the UK.

Whilst our September trip to Vegas has been put back until November (please let it happen) we are looking at Greece or similar for September just for a week but I have to say the exchange rate is currently pushing us towards all inclusive. However, for a lot of the cheaper AI deals on teletext holidays for Greece, the reviews are less than great for the food so it might work against us if we go that route.
Anyway, I have gone and I hope you enjoy Malia, like I said we went in 1997 and again in 2007. Much has changed in that time, and although we certainly felt a little older in the company of the 18-30 brigade, we still had a cracking holiday.
