Try Aubergines at the bottom of the Marinha Dourada Road. Out of MD turn right, bottom of road on the left hand side. Excellent!! Opened last year and also has Golden Goa at Ashvem. Give it a try! Also if you walk along this road, whichever direction, always carry bags on shoulder away from traffic! BEWARE!!

You should try Alresco ,opposite All spice (which we were a bit disappointed in) great food, great people, owned by a local who manages the Apora football team.

Reading the hotel reviews can give the wrong impressions sometimes, and it's also a shame that more people don't take the time to put a review on HT.
Anyway, we are booked into the MD next winter. Last time we stayed at the Lagoa Azul and we thought it was pretty good. We visited the reception area of the MD and I used the internet there. That's all of the hotel I saw really but the location looked pretty good to me. We enjoy walking, and found the walk from Lagoa Azul to Baga going past the MD very pleasant stopping for the odd beer on the way there and back. Recent reports suggest that it is unsafe to walk the roads, particularly at night and that there is a personal risk issue. We were quite happy avoiding the main road from M.D. to Arpora by taking the short cut through the woods that brings you out at the Repton Manor ( amazing how many people don't know that short cut too). Arpora has enough eating places to keep us happy, the MD is also well placed to walk to the fabulous J&A's too ( presuming it's still there !)
My questions are
1) Has Baga bridge now been rebuilt and reopened, and has the volume of traffic multiplied on the road past the M.D.
2) Is there now an issue with personal safety ? I didn't feel in the least bit threatened 18 months ago
3) Do all the rooms at the MD have views, and what of ?
4) There seems to be a constant thread of criticism at the food at the MD. We wouldn't eat there in the evenings but surely breakfast can't be that bad ?
Looking forward to any comments ( but not as much as our holiday!!!!)

We stayed at the MD Nov 06
(1) Believe that is now the case
(2) Only know what I've read on here
(3) Best rooms were in the Annexe, views of the man made lake (e-mail and request a room there)
(4) Breakfast was pretty bad. Best to skip it and have it at Lila's cafe.

Just got back from the MD earlier this month.

1. Yes new 2-lane bridge crossing the river with a new tarmc road all the way to Baga.
2. Never felt threatened whatsoever. But is pays to be street wise at all times anywhere.
3. The best rooms are 0-ground floor, 1-first floor or 2-second floor followed by the room number. So the best rooms are imho....(I like the top floor) 233-238. The other reason is that they are the first few rooms past the late bar but not to far to walk. I stayed in 259 when I was there and it's a long walk down to the room.
4. If you fancy just toast, beans on toast, fried eggs on toast, omlette with tea or coffee then it's ok. We only made it to breakfast twice, prefering to go out for breakfast.

We walked from baga bridge all the way to mojo's, facing mackies market.
It was around 9pm, dark, and we even walked back to our hotel around 11pm.
The road was a bit scary, and because i had read the comments about bag snatchers, i didnt bother taking a bag out with me, and just stored our insect repellant and other things in the pram, and my partner kept the money in his zip pocket.

Can anyone tell me what buses run near the MD?

Presumably at Baga you can get the Candolim Bus but is there a bus route at the end of the road at MD. (I'm not staying at the MD but the Royal Goan)

I'm determined to spend more time on buses this year.
Reply
Neil you can get a bus at the main road, heading into Arpora, so from the Royal Goan you would need to take a left, head past the MD right to the bottom of the road.
Other than that head down to Baga Beach End and get a bus from there.

Gemma,

Thanks. Another Q.

How would I get to Vagator by bus? Do I have to go to Mapsa first?

What buses go from main road North and what are the destinations.

Thanks.
Reply
Sorry Neil but I am not sure about the buses to Vagator from the Baga area, and I have never seen a bus in Baga or Arpora saying the destination is Vagator.
The buses ive seen leaving Baga are going the other direction, heading towards Calangute, Candolim and Mapusa.
Feelthevibe might be good cos he spends a lot of time in the Vagator area, hopefully he will read this and reply to you.

The only bus I caught up there was to Mapsa and I caught that at Starco junction in Anjuna if you know of it ? however it did come down from Vagator but where it goes to and from I have no idea really :duh Thinking about it, it probably does a circuit of Chapora/Vagator down to Anjuna(Starco) turning left down the road towards Anjuna Post office then I would thing that it heads along the road past Ingos market landing in Arpora before moving on to Calangute/Candolim with maybe another service doing the Mapsa road, best to ask at the little barber shop near All spice, i`m sure it can be done :tup

Can anyone tell me if the building has been completed that was being built behind the annexe? And what is it?

We thought it may be another hotel?

Thanks.

Probably Indian sockets there, but don't worry it's cheaper to buy them out there.
