Anyone else had trouble getting ATMs to accept their cards? My Alliance & Leicester card wasn't liked by 2 or 3 ATMs in Calangute (I did have money in the account!). My taxi driver told me this had happened to several people recently (this was back in October/November 2007), not just A&L cards either. I ended up using the Western Union office that day, which wasn't too expensive, you pay a fee to them but no charges go onto your bank account, and then used my card the next day at an ATM on the main road to Panjim with no problems. Incidentally I always find Menezes supermarket near the old petrol station in Calangute comes up with a really good rate, better than Bank of Baroda and HDFC anyway.
Generally HFDC, Axis (formerly UTI) and ICICI ATMs do work well for me, but very occasionally one will not accept my card, even though it may be a machine that I've used before. This seems to be quite random, probably the odd fault with machine or it's data connection.
I've never quite worked out what is the maximum amount that can be withdrawn in one session and/or one day. Some machines seem to impose a lower limit when they are running short of cash, after regularly withdrawing 10,000 Rs, one machine wouldn't allow it and by trial and error found that at that time the most that machine would give out was 5,000 Rs. On another machine I did try withdrawing more than my usual 10,000 Rs and found it would do 15,000 Rs but I didn't ever try any higher.
I know Visas are easier, but our new Nationwide account has only issued a Cirrus.....please help!!
We have 2 Nationwide cards Debit and Classic[credit] just checked both and they
Our account is just a savings account, hence only the cirrus.
Hi, whats the current rate?
Seems a little while since anyone posted exchange rates. I can only give the rate from Menezes supermarket in the Calangute high street. For sterling they were offering 79.90 (27/03). I think this very typical though for this area.
Rate on Calangute high st at Menezes supermarket was 78.50 for sterling.
Many hotels offer a lot less, so it is worth checking first, then shop around for a better rate.
Rate gone down a little today (29/03)
The exchange rate at the moment is 78.20 (02/04) for sterling at Menezes supermarket in Calangute high street. I did notice that a travel shop near by had 78.50 advertised. (A massive difference of 30 rupees on a £100)
Exchange rate higher today for sterling (04/04).
The exchange rate for sterling remains the same at 79.00 (05/04).
Checked the exchange rate for sterling today 07/04 and it is now 78.70 this was the highest that I could see along the Calangute high street.
Sterling rate down a little. Now 78.30 (09/04) along the Calangute high st North Goa.
Sterling rate slipped a wee bit, now 78.20 (11/04) Calangute high street.
Any problems with changing UK £50 notes or is it better to take £20's ?
There is no problem in changing £50 notes. But sometimes near the end of the holiday you may not want to cash large notes so if you are able to, bring 20's and 10's.
Sterling down today (13/04) now 77.70. This was the highest I could see along the Calangute high st.
