Hiya,

You dont have to worry about exchange rates, they are government fixed and are eactly the same wherever you change.
We took travellers cheques and most of the hotels will change money for you, in fact we paid for all our excursions in sterling as we had not yet changed any money.
Dont remember seeing any cashpoints at the airport but there are money exchange booths, also porters all accept £1 coins as tips so dont worry if you dont have time to exchange at the airport.

When we went a couple of years ago, we used the cashpoint at the airport to get some readies to see us through the first day. Can't say exactly where it was but we just asked one of the reps and she showed us.

We used ATMs a few times and were charged about £3 per transaction all together between the local Tunsian bank charges and our home bank charges. This year we've gone for a Nationwide card which (they claim) is charge-free.

I would take only a small amount of sterling and the rest travellers cheques ... the hotels have the facilities to change the cheques and any dinars that you have left over will have to be changed at the airport in return for Sterling

We never take alot of cash with us, Just cards and travellers cheques .. i had the misfortune to have my purse taken from the Tour Kalef last yr, the hotel that my daughter and her friends where staying . i eventually got the purse back ..travellers cheques and cards still intact ... cash taken .. .

Hi, I always used to take sterling travellers cheques with me as they are easy to change at the hotels, and the exchange rate is the same all over Tunisia as it is set by the government so you won't see any difference wherever you change money. The last few times I have taken cash with me and it's just as easy to change as the cheques. It depends on your personal preference really but you'll have no problems whatever you decide to take. Credit cards are widely accepted too.

I will be taking Euros, as I live in Spain. Are they as readily accepted as sterling? I will be arriving late at night, so if there are no cashpoints/exchanges open, I will only have euro coins.

It often seems there are more Europeans than English in Tunisia so Euros should not be a problem. If you are staying in an hotel and using the tour op's transfer, you won't really need dinar straight away so if the Bureau de Change is shut at the airport you will still be OK. If you really feel the need to tip anyone Euros will be accepted. Most hotels have money changing facilities though sometimes they will only change cash not cards, so I always have some cash with me. The opening times are displayed in reception, though they often stay open late for people arriving. ATMs are widspread in most tourist areas.

Just realised that I didn't say which airport I was arriving at!!! It's Tunis airport? Where are the cash machines there please?

There's a cash machine in Tunis in arrivals down the stairs. If you ask one of the reps they will direct you to it.

i have just come back and all we took was english money, you can walk into any hotel and change it, it;s a fixed rate so does'nt matter where you change it, you cant bring there money back out of the country but if you have any left you can change it in the airport

We've used our Nationwide card to withdraw cash in Spain, Greece and the US and not been charged at all.

I was considering doing this in Tunisia but from reading this I'm not so sure. It seems the preference is TQs/sterling.

Has anyone actually relied purely on getting money from ATMs? How convenient is it?

Thanks,
Dawn

Nationwide is I believe, the only UK bank which doesn't charge for withdrawals from european cash machines. I would check with them as to whether they class Tunisia as part of europe. I suspect not, because of the Dinar currency restrictions.

I usually take cash and debit/credit cards. When my cash runs out(as it always does), I use debit cards to get cash. In the tourist areas cash machines are easily found. Occasionly the machines are not working or out of cash. I have stayed in hotels where they have used my debit card to get money but not all do this. They all take credit cards.
