Would it be possible for you to say where these markets are - it is ok to say there are electric markets and there are shoe markets and you had a good time in this other market that sells clothes but for anybody who has never been to Mubai this is nothing more than a travel trip for you.
Enjoyed reading your trip report but where do we find these. I know but others don't

Fab India -one of the best shop in Mumbai - not like the ones in Candolim and Panjim

If you take a trip to Mubai go on the train to Muland - it is a wonderful suburb of Mumbai where you will not get hassled and there is great shopping - big shopping centre along with street markets every day.
Any more good shopping tips for Mumbai

The Markets that we went to were in, and around Crawford Market, ask any tuk tuk driver, and they will get you there, the tuk tuks are better to use whilst sight seeing, as the taxi's are so old that they are full of mosquitos, I have never yet been in one of those taxi's with out being bitten.

There is also the thieves market, that you can buy anything, including electricals, but be very wary of the claims that the goods are antiques, 99% of the time they are replicas, it is just off the thieves market, where the food, and meat market is, but you have to have a very strong stomuch to go through the meat market, the smell if very, very overpowering to put it politely.

From my very brief Golden Traingle tour and Mumbai visit, the first thing that struck me ( and my OH) is that Goa is nothing like any of these places. We only had a full day in Mumbai and took the car tour that a lot of folks take- but it was absolutely fascinating. The easiest way to do it is to take a scheduled flight to Mumbai and then have a day or two at the beginning or end of your holiday.

That's a good find the Suba Palace Hotel, but their price has gone up to £50 for a double from April 2008.

We stayed in the Gordon House round the corner, which is one of those boutique hotels, and very expensive.
However, we couldn't sleep at night because of the noise from their own nightclub. :cry

We will try your hotel next time in Mumbai. :tup

I'm thinking of spending a few days in Mumbai so your report was really great reading - thanks!

Has anybody tried travelling from Mumbai to Goa by rail, bus or taxi? The flights seem expensive now - about £100 each when you add all the charges on/

Hi,
Your story brings back memories of the numerous time we have stayed in Mumbai, The second time we visited India Gate and Elephanta Island, we arrived very early to the smog and the sun trying to rise thriough it, we had had an horrific journey on Air Syria, (one to miss) :( . We were staying somewhere near India Gate can't remember the name of the hotel, if thats what you could call it. We went for a walk down to the harbour to find a coffee house and we came across The Taj Hotel.

In all our travel gear (there were 6 of us) we were treated like royalty sat down to the most exquiste breakfast as much as you wanted to eat all waiter service you could never imagine the same happening in the upmarket hotels of London. The price was unbelivablely cheap. Happy days :D

The next evening we travelled by train overnight to Goa, worth the experience you should try it Roma.
Flights for Dec 08 cost us £102 return with Kingfisher.

There is a brilliant little book shop near to McDonalds on Colaba - not to be confused with the book stalls on the side of the road - and he has a brilliant map book in there which lists all the places of interest as well as where to do all your shopping. (this is not far from Regal cinema) If you have read Shantaram Leopolds cafe which is mentioned very often in the book is near the book shop. On the corner opposite the Regal is a very good veggie restaurant where you can get good cheap snacks or lunch.
Have a look at these two sites which I mentioned on the other Mumbai reply

The shoes are from Linking Road as well as handbags - the street is full of them.

Fashion street - not far from CST railway station - mostly tops and skirts - lots of mens casual clothes.

Grant Road - computer gear - mps players - memory sticks etc etc etc.

Atria shopping mall - very up market - they even sell Bentley cars here.

Crawford Market near to railway station - beware of the touts who are very insistant that they will show you round - you have to be firm with them as they are a blasted nuisance.

Thieves market is a 30rp taxi ride away from Crawford.

All easy access by train or CHEAP taxi.

narial do you know how far santa cruz is from linking road we are only there for one afternoon and evening and leave the next morning for Goa, but i would like to go shopping there, would it be worth it or would it take a long time with the traffic, also is there good places to eat in or around linking road. Many thanks for any help you can give me. :cheers

Linking Road is in Bandra which is not far from Santa Cruz (assuming you are staying near airport) We went in a taxi from India Gate, Central Mumbai to the airport in an hour (at 8 in the morning) so it should not take long to get to Linking Road. The taxi drivers are quite good in Mumbai - just ask how long it would take.
As far as eating is concerned - we did not have have any time to eat - we were shopping!!!! My friend and I went to Linking Road and left the OH's doing the rounds of the computer shops and as we were late back we bought snacks from one of the many stalls on the road and ate them on the train going back to Mumbai.
If you are buying from the stalls don't pay more than 300rps for the handbags no matter what they ask - a young local girl told us this on the train going up there. There are lots of stalls selling bags and shoes which the police frequently move off the road side but there are plenty of good shoe shops. Bought some nice chiffon sparkly kaftan tops for the beach for 150rps which have washed very well.
When are you going - will be back in Goa in a couple of weeks where all my maps and things are so could check up then.
Happy shopping.
