Possibly, but i work for a PLC too and about a 3 weeks before our accounting period end we get a notice round saying we are now entering a closed period which lasts until the announcement of the final results to the press (about 10-11 weeks in total) during which time employees are not allowed to trade in the companies shares - to do so during this period is considered insider trading and is illegal.

Yes, Mike, it is possible but as 'Cynical is my middle name' says it is also illegal. The penalties for this sort of share price manipulation can include not just fines but custodial sentences and offenders are liable to be sued for compensation by those who might have suffered losses as a result. This applies to not just those in the company but have in the recent past included financial journalists who have used their position to manipulate share prices by, for example, tipping shares that they own and then selling when the share price rises as a result. Directors of a company caught doing this will find themselves disbarred from holding directorships in the future. Anybody involved in a company that has been subject to as much scrutiny as Airtours has recently is running a huge risk of being found out if they try and do something like this.

Directors of companies come under particular scrutiny as David Blunkett has just found out - directors have to declare their own shareholdings in any company that they sit on the Board of, including their buying and selling and the big institutional shareholders eg the banks and pension fund managers watch them like hawks. Any director selling shares in their own company is going to attract attention and even more so if they then buy them back at a later date. Such activities or anything remotely like them (such as their family members buyung and selling shares in the company too) can result in the knock on the door from the Fraud Squad as people like Mary Archer have found out.

I'm going to have to bring us back on to the thread topic. Soz!!
Have now received a letter and compensation offer from Airtours about my complaints re the "holiday" we've just experienced. The voucher is for a laughable amount and has been sent back along with a covering letter. But its good news as they've admitted liability. So to all those with complaints against Airtours or any other travel company, keep at it.
