On Thursday I messaged the Nationwide through their online banking website to let them know about where I would be travelling over the Summer. They replied that they did not need to know where I was going as this would not affect my use of my cards! However last year, whilst I was in Canada they froze my debit card after a couple of failed attempts to use an ATM! They assumed it was being used fruadulently! But they didn't freeze my credit card or my wife's cards (the debit one being on a joint account)!
What they did say in the reply is that they monitor spending patterns and if there is unusual activity or the withdrawel/spending of unusually large amounts then they may investigate.
This may be a problem for me in Spetember when I am taking a party of 14 pupils to Chicago and am expecting to pay for some things such as dmission tickets etc on my card.
My Nationwide credit card was declined in Vegas in May and the purchase was only about $70. It turned out to be a glitch with the merchant, but it costs me £51 in phone calls to find that out.
I have used my cards all over the world without telling them. I was using them long before I found out it was advisable to tell them and they had always been accepted so saw no point in telling them now.
I would make sure you have the up to date contact number for both the debit and credit cards in case you need to contact them while in the US. The number I had stored in my mobile was out of date and you couldn't make out the number on the back of the card as it was printed over the embossed number.
I can understand your concern at making large payments, but you have told them and have the online email to prove it. Just for peace of mind I would also write to them and state clearly that you will be making large purchases with your cards.
If you haven't done so already, I would also write to them to have your wife authorised to discuss your credit card with them. That way, if there is a problem you can call her to call them. That will not only be cheaper, but it will save you the frustration of being kept on hold for 30-45 mins as I was.
Our credit card account is in hubby's name with me as an additional cardholder. When I called them, and was finally answered after holding for over 1/2 an hour, they wouldn't discuss it with me and hubby was at the pool at the MGM Grand which is like looking for a needle in a haystack. By that time I was raging as I was so frustrated at being kept on hold so long. When they wouldn't discuss it I was almost in tears and it takes a hell of a lot to make me cry.
I have since written to them, well hubby has, to have me authorised. They haven't replied so I called them and I am now authorised. Surprised and disappointed that they didn't write to confirm this as they used to be a very good and efficient company to deal with.

When making a deposit in our local branch I told them that we were going to Orlando and could he put a sticky on our account , he said there was no need as they didn't stop an account by using it abroad, but a friend of mine had his cloned (not a NW card) it took about 3 days to sort out and that a long time with out any money and only one card that's why our NW card is only for our Hols as we think its better not to have all your eggs in one basket
