Hi

Will see if I can find anymore.
Hi Steve
Do you know which sound & light show is the best maybe everyone has different answers.
Eilean
Eileen
Our favourite has always been the Sound & Light Show at the Pyramids. Especially if they use the Richard Burton soundtrack....
We've been to the one at Karnak but it's such a huge place and takes an age to get up to the Sacred Lake area, which is the first place you can actually get to sit down for a rest. It felt like every column in the temple was being described and lit up from the entrance and all the way in!
In roasting temperatures during July was no joke as the heat from the daytime sun was literally pouring back at us out of the stonework. Rather like a gigantic storage heater
At the Pyramids, you will probably find there is a breeze and in fact, it can even feel a little chilly...
Enjoy!

On october 12th I will be going on the presidential nile cruise with 2 adults and 1 child (aged 10), we have booked to go to the Abu Simbel temple aswell, the cruise is for a week and then the 2nd week will be spent at the Hilton Resort - Hurgharda (ultra all inclusive package)
What is the ship like?
How big are the rooms as there will be 3 people in 1 room.
What is the food like?
Will it be mainly old people on the cruise?
Is it expensive on the ship, eg drinks gifts etc
Do you have to tip and if you do, how much do they expect?
Do you have to wear evening wear every evening? (im a casual dresser, i do not wear dresses)
Is it worth paying to see king Tut?
What is worth seeing?.
What should i take in my first aid kit?
My son has asthma and hayfever, will it affect him worse over there?.
Is Egypt really dirty?
What is the hilton resort like?
Is it going to be really hot in october?
How much money should i take and what currency?
Which is better to use, a nationwide debit card or any credit card?
does 10p = 1 Egyptian pound?
If i get egyptian money in the uk, what notes should i get?.
Im sorry for all the questions but this will really prepare me when i go.

Wow! Lots of questions!
The Presidential Nile cruise ships are a chain of ships so all depends on which you are allocated. However, our room was large enough for 2 people with adequate storage space for clothes, but I think a 3rd bed would make it a bit cramped. Saying that, you won't be spending much time in your cabin, only for sleeping or getting changed. All the public rooms are comfortable and have a/c so you can quite easily chill up on deck in the plunge pool or in the lounges.
The food was fab and we had no problem with any of the meals. All are buffet style so you can help yourself and go back as many times as you like. If you don't like something, you can leave it and try something else.
Egypt is becoming more accessible for all kinds of travellers and you will find a mixture of older and young people. It was our first time on the cruise after travelling through Luxor and Aswan for many years and we wish we had done it sooner.
I wouldn't buy gifts from onboard ship as you will find the same things offered at a better price almost everywhere you visit. As for drinks onboard, yes - of course they are more expensive than at a land based cafe. But saying that, the drinks will be similar to the prices offered in most restaurants. Coffee and tea was approx LE7, local beer (Stella Local) for a bottle the size of a Newcastle Brown was around LE12 onboard. On shore, we could pay anything from LE8 to LE12 in basic restaurants to hotel bars.
Tipping is entirely at your discretion to waiters etc. You may wish to leave a tip for your cabin staff though as they do make some special touches along the way...
I also like to dress casual and with me, its a case of you get what you see. Some people like to get dressed up in the evening but it really isn't necessary. I mainly wore casual linen type trousers or jeans and t shirts. I used long sleeved shirts (lightweight) as I'm prone to being chewed by mosquitos.
King Tut's tomb is very plain in comparison to those in the Valley of the Kings that were a long time in planning. After all, he wasn't expected to pop off quite so soon! There is no real decoration - the main question you should ask is, "will I go again and if not, will I be sorry I didn't pay the extra to go and see it?" We went in the first time but wouldn't go in again. There are some spectacular ones to see though and your guide will tell you which are the best decorated. If you are fit - try Tuthmosis III is our favourite but you have to climb a stairway first and then go fairly deep underground to get to the burial chamber. Remember though, you have to come back the way you went afterwards!
First Aid Kit should contain exactly what you would take for any foreign holiday - cleansing/antiseptic wipes, plasters, antihistamine if you are prone to mosquito bites, maybe you could consider some water purification tablets and some salt tablets in case of dehydration. Ensure you drink at least 2 litres of water per person per day. Lay off alcohol in the daytime as this only dehydrates you even further. You can take Imodium too if you are prone to a gyppy tummy but the local stuff is better and can be supplied by the ships doctor if need be. Stay clear of salad unless you can absolutely guarantee it's been washed with bottled water. Wash all fruit skins or peel it off. When you come back into the A/C rooms - take a warm drink (the local tea is good) to allow your body become accustomed before having an icy cold drink. This is one of the best ways to avoid tummy upsets!
I have asthma and also allergic rhinitis (similar to all year round hayfever and take antihistamine daily). Climbing in and out of tombs is tough, especially if it's hot - but your ticket only allows you 3 tombs each maximum to visit. If your son is too tired then best to let him take a breather in between.
I can't speak for the Hilton resort as we've never stayed there, we prefer to be more centrally located in Luxor.
The temperatures in October will still be high 80's but cooler in the evening. It's a dry heat rather than a sweaty heat.
Take stirling and change into local currency. Ensure all talk of prices once in Egypt is in LE (Egyptian pounds) so there can be absolutely no cause for confusion. Stick to LE1, LE5, LE10 up to LE50 notes.
Hope all that helps a bit

Thank you CwB thats helped me alot
Hiya all, Although I've been to Egypt twice before I have only just joined this forum. We're off on the 27th April 2009 starting on the Nile on board MS Sun Ray. Is anyone going on the same trip? After the cruise we're off to Aswan to board the MS Nubian Sea for 4 nights on Lake Nasser. If you've never been to Lake Nasser let me say that the night skys are to die for, it's harder to get a sun bed at night than during the day. Then finally, to chill out at The Mena House Oberoi for 3 nights. Due to age and health reasons this will be the very last time we will go to Egypt (unfortunately ) 'cos I love the place, but I do have a lot of piccys and video's to remind me of this wonderful land.
Next Month we have booked with Discover Egypt a seven night cruise on their newest boat, the Royal Viking 5*. I have not seen any reviews of this ship. Any info would be appreciated.
I would appreciate any info on the experiences of others doing this or similar holiday, basically anything relevant that will help to prepare us would be great!
many thanks
Hiya Johnboy, if your going on the 27th you may be on the SunRay,if you are look out for us (4 noisy pensioners) lol. 2 blokes and 2 blond 'er indoors.
Just back from a Thomas Cook Nile cruise, 7 days cruising the Nile, 4 days on the Prince Abbas on lake Nasser and finally 3 days at the Fairmount towers in Cairo .Absolutely superb, it really would be hard to find a negative to this holiday. All i can say if you are due to go soon is i really doubt you will be disappointed.
We go at 5am tomorrow morning, I won't be dissapointed to leave this lousy weather behind. I found some pictures of the Royal Viking which looks really nice. I will post you a full review once I get back.
Nile cruise on SunRay, absolutely first class. Crew and staff were excellent and really looked after us without expecting baksheesh, they got it anyway. Drink prices on the boat were a bit of a shock, £5 for a bottle of local beer (Sakkara) £10 for a single brandy and £25 for a bottle of cheap? local wine(Oblisk). A good idea is to stock up with duty free at the airport, we did. Do not change travellers cheques on the boat, you get a terrible rate and they charge a EGP30 per cheque commission. Apart from the above the trip exceeded expectations and we are looking into booking SunRay again later in the year.
Lake Nasser cruise on MS Nubian Sea, boat is a bit tatty for a 5* unfortunately there were only 8 Brits on the boat, the rest being made up with Spanish. Now I've got nothing against the Spanish but I do wish they would learn to que. It got a bit pushy and shovy at meal times, and it sounded like The Tower of Babel for most of the time. A real moan on this boat was that the Restaurant Manager needed a lesson in manners, and to be told that the British also pay his wages as well as the Spanish. Drink prices same as SunRay only for some unknown reason the same bottle of wine was £6 cheaper? Apart from the aformentioned the overall trip was excellent and we enjoyed every minute of it.
Mena House Oberoi, Cairo. no need to say much about this piece of heaven. Except, do not book any trips through Misr travel in the foyer, for instance, we asked about a camel ride and they quoted EGP800 for 4 people, we went down 'camel road' and saw a chap called Ishmael and booked the same ride for EGP160. A great end to our holiday. By the way, if you have to change any travellers cheques you get a very good rate at Mena House and they only charge EGP10 per transaction. Hope this helps.
Im not going to be happy if he has to sleep on the floor.
Is there any way I can find out what the cabins look like?, im not going till october so I dont know which ship it will be.
Hi Mi$$y
Longwoods holidays booked through First Choice Its called The complete Egypt but instead of doing 3 nights in Cairo we are staying a week at Hilton Hurghada resort - Hurghada.
