South is definitely more expensive, food, taxis, everything. We paid 5000 rupees for a day on a fishing boat, where you can do the same in the North for 850rs.

Ditto....
Most of the 5* resorts are in the south where it can cost you more for one night than the whole of your two weeks up north, so even the 2*/3* tourists have to bear the knock on effect of the "luxury" tourist dollar.
Plus some of the resorts are a bit out of the way, so the taxis tend to hold the whip hand, have got their heads together and dont cut each others rates, though Palolem, Patnem and Agonda shacks come out on par with northern shacks on prices.

We paid 5000 rupees for a day on a fishing boat

Where? We had a whole day from 10 till 6 including food and beer for 750 Rupees.

I KNOW!!! We were thoroughly ripped off, well that was the price for 6 of us, but as the couple we went with weren't happy, they paid 2000 and we paid 2500. A lesson learned.

we flew back on march 8th and i sat next to a couple who have been going since 2001.they first backpacked but now book flights/accom. separately.they have stayed north and south and said it was way cheaper down south and would never stay north again.they found a bar where you could get honeybee for 10r and a small bottle of coke for 8r! they insisted that if we tried south we would never return north.anybody agree?

Last week I had a great breakfast in a lovely cafe' called Tato's mixed baji was 8 rupees puri (3 lovely puffed pancakes) was 9 rps and a milky coffee 10. It is a complete myth that South Goa is nothing but 5 star hotel's and tourists who don't leave there resort having said that taxi's are more expensive but they are not if you keep clear of taxi queue's outside hotel's and do a bit of haggling :) the local bus costs no more than 8 rupees and tuk tuks are great fun as well as being really cheap.

I stayed around Benaulim and would say prices were either the same or slightly cheaper. Taxis I thought were slightly more expensive but food was cheaper, sure there are expensive hotels but just use a bit of common sense!

My husband wanted to try a 'local' bar which we did just up a bit from Baga beach. We had 4 vodkas, 2 cokes and a bottle of water. The price? An unbelievable 80 rupees! Also ate in a Tibetan restaurant, had 5 alcoholic drinks, 4 soft drinks and 4 main meals for 650 rupees!

Hi bushbaby - hubby just told me the local bar wasn't Baga - we'd eaten at Souza Lobo on the beach that night and apparently it was just up from Calangute Beach on the right as you head back into town. It was just a small room but dirt cheap for drinks! I can't remember the name of the Tibetan restaurant but again think it was Calangute as we went there most nights and it was up some stairs overlooking the road. Sorry I can't be more precise - it was my first time in the North and one area looks pretty much like another to me in the dark and after a drink or 5! I'll try and get some more information from the friends we were with who know the area much better and let you know.

I think the restuarant you are thinking of is the Capricorn, it's right next to a sign to the Tibetan place which is well back off the road up a path, you go up a few steps to it, and you are sitting looking down on the road. The cheap drink place is a couple of doors further up, its really just a shop unit, used as a bar, and as you say, dead cheap Alan

There's plenty of local bars that are dead cheap if you know where to look... Took a mate to a bar up by Calangute market and 8 Kings and 2 Kingfishers came to the grand total of 144 Rps :glynis Happy Days :sun

If you go into any village and find the local bar it's so cheap and the banter and stories are great :)

Hi again - just been told by our friends that the Tibetan restaurant was just up a bit further from the Tibetan market by the roundabout on the same side of the road as the market. It was on the main street.
