Hi there,
first timer visiting Goa on 13th April. My boyfriend has a nut allergy and he is concerned about the rumours that most of the food in Goa contains nuts. Could anyone advise me on this? And also, as I havent been before, would it be enough for me just to explain the restaurant staff about his allergy
Sorry Emma - can't help with the nut allergy but just wanted to say - welcome to our forum!
Goa seems to be the land of the Cashew nut so I would imagine you would have to be very careful.
I doubt very much if the staff in a restaurant would understand the severity of the problem and would merely say that they will not not put any nuts in the food, but i don't think that they would realise that nuts are in the sauces etc.
As has already been said, a lot of the Indian food contains nuts (ground to a paste) and used to thicken the masala (curry sauce). Most of the local Goan dishes are coconut based. So do be very careful. I know of only one restaurant that actually is aware of the nut allergy and in fact it is mentioned on their menu. It is called Moonlight Garden Restaurant & Bar in Candolim, near the Shantadurga Temple on the Panjim Road (which is the road opposie Casa Seashell). Great choice of food including indian, chinese, tandoor and english. Great pies which are freshly made to order. Enjoy your holiday.[/b]
If it is a serious allergy, I would be very careful indeed. It may be worth asking the Indian Embassy to translate something that you could show to restaurants that would convey the importance of no nuts.
The fruit is good!
You also need to be careful on the beach, you constantly have nut sellers coming up to you to try and sell them/get you to try some! Believe it or not, I decided to tell them all that I had an allergy to try and get them to leave me alone.... Some understood, others thought I was barking mad!!
I hope this doesn't affect your holiday too much!
Goldie
