Hi
Sorry, this is definatly off topic as not relelated to holidays.
My mother-in-law is german and I would like to buy her a calender for 2011 as part of her Christmas present. One with pictures of old Berlin would be ideal.
Just wondered if any of you in the know could let me have details of a website where I could order something like this online and have it shipped to the UK. I have tried a google search without success.
Thanks in advance
Kook have moved this post into General Help as more members may view it here than in the Germany forum. There is a link from there to here so it'll cover both
Go to http://www.buecher.de it's in German but the pictures are obvious! In the Kategorien pull down box select Kalender (and make sure it does select instead of revertin to Alle!) then type Berlin into the box at the side and click Los. Currently gives 3 pages of hits with a few with old images (i like the coloured postcard one!). Don't know about postage though. I'll have another look when I'm better organised!
Thank you

If your MIL lives in Germany, you could also choose the gift wrap option and have them deliver directly to her, which would avoid the international shipping costs.
Again the site's in German, but the symbols (shopping cart, present etc) will help, and the site is set up in the same way as the UK version, if you're familiar with that.
To search, in the box next to "Suche" choose "Alle Kategorien" and in the box next to that type Kalendar 2011 Berlin. Then click "Los". I got 59 hits. Those that seem to fit your requirement are; Berlin um 1900. 2011. Broschürenkalendar; Berlin gestern 2011. Kalendar: Berlin in alten Ansichten; Berlin vor hundert Jahren 2011.
To check delivery costs to the UK, once in the product page, click on "Siehe details" next to the words "lieferung kosten", after the price. The option you will then need is Versandkosten Ausland, then scroll down to Großbritannien. (Cost is EUR6.00).
If you want to delete anything you have in your shopping basket, click "Löschen".
Hope this helps.

If you've got Microsoft Publisher on your computer, then why not make your own and truly make it a special present?
All you will need is either some A3 or A4 lightweight card (which they sell here in Tesco dead cheap because I buy it for other projects)
Then you can either buy one of those coil thingies with a hook, usually available from stationers or craft shops, or punch two holes with those rivet gadgets which leave a plastic circle around the holes to reinforce them, and a bit of cord with the T stoppers on each end.
Obviously you'll need a printer and some ink in the cartridges, but once you have the "gear" you could make this a regular present finding "new" photos every year and very professional looking too....
Excluding the printer cartridges because the price of them can vary from a couple of pounds to a rip off price......I bet all the gear would cost less than what some sites would charge in postage.
If you go onto Google image search for "old Berlin" there are plenty of photos and some are out of copyright now.
I've just had a really quick play in Publisher using one of their templates and I just change the view from landscape to portrait.
I've lost the quality of the project because I've had to do a screenshot and convert a publisher file to a jpg format to get it on this forum"¦.. and you would delete/hide the guide lines before printing.....but you really could play around and make this something that NOBODY else has.

I too thought of making one myself. Have been making greeting cards and also scrapbooks for years now and have loads of "stuff" to do it. Just wanted something professional looking.
Anyway have found out that one of our other relatives is buying her a calender for Christmas so that puts the brakes on that idea.
Anyone got any other suggestions for a novel Christmas present would be much appreciated. My Mother-in-Law is German (from Berlin) but has lived in the UK for years (amonst other places...Australia, Iran, St. Kitz!). She is married to a Geordie!
Am struggling for ideas for Christmas. Never had this problem before. Unfortunately, she has been very unwell and is now housebound and this makes things even more difficult
Thanks again for all your replies it is very much appreciated.

How about some Chocolates or traditional German Stollen cake, biscuits etc from the German supermarkets Lidl and Aldi.

http://www.drinksdirect.co.uk
http://www.drinkfinder.co.uk
Drinks direct also stocks Henkell Rosé which is Sekt - sparkling wine that's the German equivalent of Cava.
If there are any German foody items she misses you could try http://www.germandeli.co.uk - they stock some things that are difficult to find in standard UK shops. They deliver, but if you're in London they have a store near Borough Market.
Or check to see if there are any Christmas markets near you that include German stalls, and look for some traditional German Christmas decorations or foods.
If I think of anything else I'll let you know!
Just like to say a big thank you for your replies
Just to mix up things completely - if anyone likes the idea of making bespoke calendars with their own photos (digital) I can recommend Aldi's service at
I usually buy some as soon as it comes into the stores and stock pile it!
The German Christmas market in my town usually sell it at £2.50 a slice and I can see by the wrapper its from Lidl or Aldi.
last time I looked the Aldi stuff was made in England! I also do a rather good Tirolean apple strudel which is not the same as the usual Viennese version with flaky pastry.
Problem now solved and Christmas presents bought. Went off on another tangent and ended up buying both sets of parents a coffee maker!
From calendar to coffee maker - you sound like me
Actually not too far off tangent - being able to get a decent cup of coffee is very German.
Thanks
you get voucher codes to go with your account once you make an order. They come by email - so far I've got them saved for prints, calendars and posters (and I've never had a poster!!). Wait a while before ordering the next and an email may arrive with a discount.
Thanks for that. I've had an e-mail to say my calendar's been shipped. I'll wait a while before ordering my son's.
I've found the envelope for mine, it came 20/10 and the email voucher came 28/10. £3 off any type.
