obviously that would be the best thing to do...to get an appointment so at least his mind would be at ease... i can only imagine how awful this would be so close to the holiday... hope he gets it sorted!

glasgow won't take any new appointments as the office is closing. closest is durham or belfast. :(

his young step-daughter is really upset as this will be her 1st holiday abroad

in that case, if he doesnt have any transport to get to durham, his only other option is what i said in my earlier post...I really cant think of any other way, hope he manages to get it sorted... will keep my fingers crossed for him!

My daughter's friend had a very similar problem and ended up having to fly to Belfast to get an appointment at the Passport Office there, as she needed the passport urgently so she could go to Camp America.

Hi

We have just returned from a week in Spain and my husband only had 4 or 5 months remaining on his passport. He telephoned the Foreign Office and they said as long as his passport was valid for his stay and return journey it would fine. Your friend could always telephone and check although he has probably sent his passport back to the passport office by now.

You went to Spain and EU countries don't have any rules other than that the passport be valid for the dates of travel. Turkey though is different and does have a six month validity rule.

Can anyone help please. After our trip to Riga last weekend I have washed my husband's jeans with his passport in the pocket. It was inside a leather wallet, and so has remained intact in the wash. I dried it on the radiator, and apart from the fact that the pages are a bit crisp & rumpled, it looks ok. I am however worried that when it is scanned on our next trip that they will think it has been tampered with. Advice please.

Helen, that's a piece of string type question as it's impossible to judge how badly damaged it is.

Only passport control can tell you if they deem it to be acceptable.

In practice you usually find they allow you to travel, but advise you to get it replaced asap.

They have, on occasion, refused travel due to potential tampering.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but it's passport control's call, and they may have had a bad day when you go up to the desk.

Hi, i have heard you get the months back, and last year my sons passport got damaged, so i applied for a replacement passport, but they sent him a fresh passport, with 5 years and 2 months on.

So in short, yes you will get the remaining months back :)

You can get up to 9 months added on.

From the age of 16 you have an adult 10 year passport.

Would love to take my brother away to have a a holiday in Spain for his 50th birthday. He has never been on holiday before, never mind left the UK.
Anyone know how long a first Passport application takes? Official Passport website says to allow 6 weeks but I have only 3 weeks.
Any input appreciated. He was born in UK to parents also born in UK and has no convictions or any stain on his character

Helen ... because of the increased security checks and personal interviews that are required by first time applicants, the IPS does advise allowing 6 weeks. But even that is not guaranteed. The Fast-track service is not available to first time applicants. The Post Office Check & Send service is available, but turnaround time is not guaranteed.

In addition to regional passport offices, there is also now a network of local interview offices. It may be worth making enquiries with the IPS to see what sort of waiting time there is locally for an interview, in the hope that this may be a quieter time. That will give you an idea if it is worth proceeding. However it may not be possible to actually arrange an interview appointment until the application has been received, checked and verified by the IPS and a letter is sent inviting you to make an appointment.

I posted before about first passport.
Brother phoned yesterday to say Birth Certificate was returned and his application was being processed. The letter included a Passport Number and on that basis he tiold us to book up which we duly did.. Today he has had a letter, requesting him to go for an interview. This has been arranged for Monday 19th January. Do you think there is any chance of passport coming through before booked travel on 2nd February.
Hope someone can answer

Thanks
