I'm glad people are still liking my pictures - it's nice to be able to spread a little happiness :D

zeldamcglen - what make and model of camera did you buy?

I think there are two sides to taking pictures. There is the artistic side (for example can you "see" the picture you want before you take it) and there is the technical side (knowing how you camera works, what settings to use, when is a good or bad time to take pictures etc.). It's much easier to be creative if you first understand your camera. A couple of basic tips I would suggest are:

1) Read your camera manual and play with the camera before going on holiday so you have some idea what it does and which modes/options should be used in what circumstances (e.g. on a beach in the sun or in a restaurant at night).

2) Get used to the viewfinder or screen on your camera so you know how to frame a picture so you get people's heads in! Some compact cameras unfortunately now only have a screen and this can be difficult to see in sunlight.

3) For those beach and sea shots, morning or afternoon light is generally better than taking pictures around the middle of the day with the sun blazing straight down (try to shoot with the sun behind you).

4) Make sure you take plenty of memory with you (either extra cards or a portable storage device). Then you can always take a couple of pictures of something and then just print the best one.

5) Don't forget to keep the camera battery charged!

Most cameras now have pretty good automatic modes, so if you really don't want to be thinking about F-stops, ISO settings, when to use the flash etc. you may get away with letting the camera do most of the thinking.

its a canon digital camera, 10 mega pixels and thats all i know (sorry)

i got it for £149.99 from asda, it came with a 1gb memory card. Any ideas how many photos a 1gb holds, and do you recommend i buy another memory card.

i honestly havent had a go on it yet, i wouldnt know where to start.

I think i should read the manual.

i dont go on holiday till june 08, but i will be using it at christmas and my son's birthday party.

thankyou for the advice

I just took a look and ASDA have the CANON IXUS 70 for £149.99, although that appears to contain a 7 mega pixel sensor (rather than 10). Don't get hung up on the pixel count - 6 mega pixels is perfectly adequate for printing large pictures - even up to A3 size.

If you have got the CANON IXUS 70 then that is a decent small point and shoot camera, which should be able to do most normal pictures quite well in automatic mode.

If you assume the images would be up to about 4 Mb each, you should get at least 250 pictures on your 1Gb card. Memory cards are cheap these days, so if you shop around an extra 1Gb card should set you back no more than £20. A couple of years ago they were more like £100!

These cards are quite small, so be careful to put them somewhere safe when they are not in the camera so they don't get lost

Cheers.
