Avoid these XXXXXX

Just got back from a 3 day trip to Albufeira, booked a car with these via HolidayAutos/TravelRepublik

Paid the Extra Insurance over the internet at time of booking.

When we landed at Faro went to Guerin desk who Demanded another €42 insurance or we wouldnt get the car.

The whole booth was in uproar as they were pulling this XXXXX on every customer who had already paid the insurance excess in advance. Their excuse uttered with a knowing smirk "was that the payment already made had not been paid to them but another company" although we had it in black & white on our booking confirmation.

These XXXXXXXX should be avoided at all costs.

Can anyone recommend a hire car company that does not charge a fortune extra when you collect the car from the airport. We were there in April and booked a car with Auto Europe and paid £97 on booking, when we picked the car up from National Car Rental we were asked to pay a further £76 to cover any damage to the car, they said if we chose to opt out we would be resposible for the full price of the car if any damage occured. We have booked cars through the same company in Mainland Spain and only ever paid £10 optional extra to cover wheels and Tyres can anyone help

I have now returned after my BMV hire.
From what I saw and experienced they tend to use old/high millage cars that are not in the best condition (both bodywork and mechanical). The particular car I initially hired had 170,000 KM on the clock and actually broke down after 3 days. This car was replaced later the same day, with car that also seemed to be a number of years older than any other hire car I have driven from other companies. For these reasons, I shall pay the few extra pounds to a larger, more etablished company and drive a new, well maintained car during my next Algarve trip!

I've only ever dealt with one company and that's Travelrent.
Excellent service and usually an upgrade of much higher. They are very competitive. My latest quote for a 3 day hire in December is €35 all in.
Email them direct and give them your requirements.
Email address - carhire@travelrent.pt
Very highly recommended.

robby yesterday I was pricing up car hire for July 2008 and went onto economycarhire and travel rent weren't listed but another company was - Guerin? I wonder what's happened?

Hi Glynis, very strange, I have also tried Economycarhire and they arnt covering Travel Rent, obviously something has gone wrong. I also tried http://www.travelautos.com which apparently is a sister company of Economycarhire and they also are not covering Travel Rent for 2008. Maybe its best emailing the address rob has given. If we require a car on the last minute we ring the office of travel rent, but maybe if they are no longer dealing with Economycarhire they wont give the same cover on insurance ie no excess, possibly a question to ask in the email if you decide to contact them. Cheers Jayjan

Hi Glynis just done another check on Economycarhire, they are quoting Travel Rent up to the dates 22nd March to 29th March and dates after that are not quoted so obviously the contract has been terminated what a shame. Maybe like i said in last post you could email Travel Rent ask for a price and also if the insurance is fully comprehensive with no excess, otherwise you will have to try one of the other companies Economycarhire are now using & trust they will give the same service as Travel Rent. Hi Jay I carried on with my search and there was another company there who actually met you at the airport via rep. I liked the sound of this as travel rent were using the counter near the coffee shop and the last twice we've used them the queue has been quite long and slow, as it was shared with other companies. Think both airauto and drive4fun offer this service.

On checking the website drive4fun don't charge for out of hours delivery so they might be ok.

I am going to Portugal over Christmas and wanted to hire a car for the week, should I pre book my hire car or just get one when I get off the plane..?
some of the online companys I have never heard of but in the same respect I dont want to be paying over the odds by booking it when I arrive in Faro.
This is the 1st time I have ever went on holidays without the beauty of a package deal

Help please

Glynis ,just done another search for economycarhire and it seems any bookings starting from 1/4/08 onwards Travel Rent are not quoting, maybe their contract has been terminated or there are problems with it or they havn't got cars available for the dates. Glad you got your booking Nosivad enjoy your driving on the Algarve. Cheers Jayjan

Superbok, http://www.economycarrentals.com are a different company to http://www.economycarhire.com they both give no excess on insurance, but do check. The company that majority HT members are really recommending is the latter company, but thats personal choice.

Fiona, I would book a car in advance, as at the airport when you arrive it will cost you more. The choice is yours from the above 2 companies, but I would recommend http://www.economycarhire.com from many many rentals with them with great satisfaction. Its based in the UK and only a phone call away if you have any questions, have a look on their website. Cheers Jayjan

I used economycarrentals and service was excellent. A new car delivered to the hotel as requested, cheapest quote I found and full insurance included and will use again. :tup
