I would say they were cockroaches, although I didn't get a close inspection!! It felt like someone was throwing stones at us.... ick!!
I think the flying black things are dung beetles. Had loads of them on safari in Africa. Some were the size of my hand ! I heard they're blind so they just fly around and only stop either when they hit something or to "roll dung" - hence the name. They only appear with certain weather conditions and I'm not sure whether you get them in Goa. Definitely in Kenya. They all got tangled in my hair.

To be honest Cabana's is the only place I saw any creepy crawlies, I suppose because it's right up in the hills and surrounded by lots of trees etc.
We only saw lizzards around our hotel, and I saw a mongoose on the beach (not exactly a creepy crawly - but it still scared me).
The worst thing that happened to me was 4 years ago, we were walking along the main Candolim road and as usual I was being nosey not looking where I was going when I trod on something that went pop, I looked down expecting to see an empty carton but got the shock of my life when it was a dead rat , then the smell hit me, it had obviously been there a while and with the heat was festering nicely. I was so thankful I had trainers on, I hate to think if I had been wearing flip flops. We went straight to the elephant shop and bought disinfectant and back to the hotel and put them in hot water in a bucket in the bathroom. Every time we walked past that spot I relived it and the smell stayed with me for days , it still makes me shudder now, thank god it was only a small one.
.....OMG Debs this is getting worse ...the pop sound I know it only too well we were in the airport and a bird got runover and it went pop too colleen
To date ive only ever seen one cockroach, last November, in Molly Malones.
Irishcolleen is going to paint them all green in March for St Patricks day
The flying cockroaches are horrendous, worst nightmare ever!!!!
I haven't seen any 'roaches in Goa either at the Marinha D or the Phoenix Park and have only seen one or two rats.
The nearest thing to something scary was a snake hanging from a tree in Baga at a restaurant over a couple eating their meal.
When we asked the locals , who were all watching with great interest, if it was dangerous they all said"we don't know"
There is , or was, a pic of Sammy the snake in the photo section
Perhaps we have been the lucky ones( or unkucky) but we have seen, two cobras in a rain ditch, a brown rat snake, alime green snake( in d.s) we also saw a lot of tree frogs in the same place, a frog the size of a plate, a few cockroaches, one landed on my wifes chest, i thought it was a brouch untill it went for a strole, Lynn didn't make a sound untill I removed it then all heel let loose, but by far the worsed sight was when I went to the loo on varca beach and saw the mother of all spiders munching on a gecko, yuk, I never saw anything up north, this was all in south Goa, which is obvious really, a lot less people, more open country and a lot quieter so they thrive.
I might be a good idea to hide this thread from your OH
A spider eating a lizard... oh no I wish I never read that!
How disgustingly brilliant that must have been to see, i would have been fascinated! I must be in the minority here, i really do love getting up close to the wildlife of the country i am in, even the yucky, slimy and scary kind. I dont even mind rats or snakes etc as long as they are just going about their lives leaving me alone! Admittedly i wouldnt fancy them landing on me or getting in my hair but to observe from a safe distance some of the things described by people here would help to make my holiday even better. I love all the gruesome creepy crawlies, the weirder the better. Maybe it me thats weird.mother of all spiders munching on a gecko
That is a good point LisawithanS, it is interesting to see... at a distance!!! As you as long as they are not touching me.
Yea Lozza 07 ugh! imagine a flying cockroach getting caught up in your hair! I had a beautiful butterfly land on my shoulder while in Goa one day, i felt priveledged to see that so close. There are some amazing creatures there, as someone else said its all part of the natural fauna. Saw a few cockroaches at our hotel, but i would not kill one, would feel too bad doing that.
Have never seen any cockroaches in Goa in over 8 years but have seen rats and a snake all at a safe distance and I hope they stay that way.
Dont forget the palm tree rats, we watced them as darkness fell, from our balcony, upstairs in the White House. They only make their appearance when it's almost dark and feed on the small developing nuts at the crown of the tree. They appeared to get up there by running over the roof and on to palm fronds that were touching the roof. You could make out their ratty tails so it was'nt the little tree squirrels we were watching When I told the owners the just laughed and said "tree Rats" Our balcony door remained tightly shut from then on!!! Alan
It wasn't anything nasty but it was vey funny!
Recently we've had a couple of scorpians, one pretty large and a smaller one.... No snakes this year (that I can think of). Oh no I lie, yes we did, just a small one though...
