Can anyone suggest where I might find a reasonably priced apartment for middle of August? (for 3) I have tried everywhere I can think of but nothing as yet. And if I don't find something soon I will have to explain to SWMBO!

Try the Jardim do Vau it is actually in Praia do Vau but that is not too far from Alvor.You can book direct but often it is cheaper to go through Algarve Direct if you go onto their website you can check the price and availability before ringing them.Hope this helps
