Hi Mark, Sanji has just come back from there, I'm sure when she reads your post she will be able to give you loads of info, she's very knowledgeable is our Sanji. Have a good holiday, Linda.
I wouldn't want to recommend anywhere because we have been staying in a hotel for the last 4 or 5 years and during that time a lot of places have changed hands as more and more people are discovering the delights of La Carihuela....so don't take these suggestions as gospel.
Prior to that, we have stayed in apartments in the Playamar district and the las Palomas apartments and for years before that we stayed in a private apartment in La Carihuela just behind the hotel Pez Espada, which was owned by a chap my hubby knew from the pub and after he sold it, we decided to go back to hotels because the more famous La Carihuela became, the more pricey the rental of apartments became and there was little difference (price wise) between going s/c and h/b in a hotel for the 2 of us .when the total cost was calculated up at the end of the holiday.
Casa Juan is one of the oldest restaurants in Carihuela and it still remains extremely popular with the Spanish, but every time a bar closes down near the original restaurant it is now named Casa Juan, so whilst the original is still there and popular, they are acquiring other properties and just expanding.
We have been in Casa Juan (just walk to the end of Calle Bulto) and Restaurante Antonio, (Plaza del Remo) both very good.
Dutch bars,? The Dutch have moved in and there are about 5 restaurants on the promenade between Plaza del Remo and the end of the promenade before the walkway around the "rock", if you don't see the orange colour, you'll hear the noise first.
Names I can remember off the top of my head"¦"¦
Restaurant `t Karrewiel.
Cafe de Klikspaan
Grand Cafe' Het Hof
The Flying Dutchman
If you want a good snack/meal during the daytime, then I can recommend a place called "The Dark Side of The Moon""¦think they must be Pink Floyd fans.
It is set back from the promenade behind a grass area and you can easily walk by and miss it, they have a union jack flag flying outside to attract the eye.
We usually leave the beach around 2pm and have a snack to keep us going until the evening meal in the hotel then back to the beach opposite or whatever.
They do things like lasagne, chilli cOn carne, jacket potatoes, salad, chips, sandwiches on white baps, English breakfasts, set meals, apple pie and custard etc etc.
They can make a good cup of tea and that's the first thing I use to order while deciding what to have from the menu they close at 5pm and the prices are very reasonable, they are very accommodating and will do whatever you want.
Next door to the Flying Dutchman which is situated at the far end of the promenade near the "rock", there is another British Restaurant, we haven't been in for a while but I can remember when it was their first season in La Carihuela
They seem to have made a success of the venture and the place is always busy when we walk passed"¦can you believe after having 2 weeks of fish, paella and calmares whilst killing time before the departure to the airport, all my hubby fancied all day long was chips sausages and beans It is catering typically for the Brits and I can't remember the name It is something like nook or nooky, it has a big yellow sign with a union jack flag painted in the corner well worth a try for a good British meal at very reasonable prices.
El Mojito is a British bar at the start of Calle Bulto, they do food, €7.50 for a 3 course meal, they have live acts on, pool tables, internet and Sky TV etc"¦IMO, not my scene, very over rated, wouldn't be seen dead in the place"¦each to their own.!
Hong Kong (Chinese) restaurant on Calle Bulto, been in there a few times"¦OK .
Heard about The Carihuela Carvery that everyone raves about, never tried it myself, it's on Calle de la Luna, a few streets back from the prom.
I'm hopeless with names, but if you walk down Calle Bulto from Plaza del Remo, on the left hand side you will come to a cross junction in the street, if you look left then you will see the Hotel Lago Rojo, the restaurant on the left (on the junction) is a Spanish restaurant specialising in fish dishes....been there loads of times and still cannot remember the name, but it is very good if you want to sample the local cuisine and not expensive....had a lunch time meal there last month.
Still rate Casa Juan the best and so do thousands of Spaniards, but remember that like everywhere else, if you eat on the promenade, then you will pay for the view....it didn't use to be like that, but that is what mass tourism does to a place.
Hope this helps.
Edit: Racked my brains and remembered...the British bar is called The Cosy Nook.

When we stayed there we used to go to a Dutch bar called the Sea Wolf, we ate there and the food was excellent. They do a menu of the day, I think it was around 10 euros. Be sure to go early though as it is very popular. It`s also a good place for a drink, the owners and staff are very welcoming, they even send nibbles round latter on in the night.
I would recommend the Carvery, Calle Saltillo. (the street opposite the Hotel Aloha Playa). Even though its a 30 minute drive for us we still go now and then. British owned (same owners for a few years) it costs about 9 euros. Meat is carved for you, yorkshire puds, roasted potatoes, beef, pork Lamb or chicken and you can have all 3 if you want..and go back. Best value on the costa, and I live here!!
The Dark Side of the Moon lights up our visits to that area, too, and be aware that if you don't feel the equal of their Desperate Dan portions of steak pie, lasagne and such, they'll do you a very nice sandwich, or baguette, to take to the beach, as well as a cold drink. Highly recommended.
Pascual I and II
Uwe Majesteit, excellent food here and a very good host, Mark.
Het Hof
The Italian is very good, although I cannot remember the name.
I hope you have a great time
Walking from Benalmadena Marina, were does the Carihuela start??
I tend to regard all that stretch of beach from the Puerto Marina as Carihuela, but actually first it is Playa de Montemar and then Playa de Carihuela, which I think starts just after Plaza del Remo...or maybe a little bit further down from there to the end of the beach.
