Hi Munchito

Regardless of who supplies your Broadband you will have to have Telephonica supply the line. So first you need to contact them on 1004. If you do not speak Spanish you can request to speak to someone who speaks English just by saying 'English' after you hear the first message. You must ask them for an ADSL line but emphasise that you only want the line. Once you have done this you can decide what company you want to supply your broadband. There are quite a few on the island. We have chosen Direct Telecom. We have a wireless router [which is brilliant when the kids want to use the pc and the laptop to talk to mates on MSN - it means no rows] We have internet access 24/7 and the package that we chose gives us free national calls and international calls to many countries for 3.4 CENTS per minute. We pay 48 Euros per month which is more expensive that the yUK but is one of the cheapest on the island.

If you choose Direct Telecom mention my name please as I will get 20 euros credit to my account

Seriously though if I can be of any more help let me know.

Hi,

This is great news!

I knew it was possible to get ADSL by itself in other countries but thought that we would have to incur standard Telefonica line rental in Tenerife plus cost of broadband.

Do you have an international number for Telefonica so that we can call them from the UK. Also, can you tell us whether they will make a charge for setting up the line and whether there is any ongoing charges from Telefonica.

Thanks for your help.

Will try and find out the number for Telephonica for you.

Our line cost 32 euros but that was just because the line was already there but the previous owners took the old number with them. I think, but am not 100% sure that a new line costs about 139 euros. There is still the cost of line rental with Telephonica but as I haven't had a bill yet I can't tell you how much it will be. Unfortunately if you want a phone you have to use Telephonica for the line so will always incur line rental charges, but at least by going through another telcommunications company you are saving a fortune on calls.

To be honest you may not even have to contact Telephonica yourself. When we decided to use Direct Telecom I just went to their offices gave them my address and NIE number and they dealt with telephonica for me. I just got a call from the engineer to say when he would be coming
