Just back from a second visit to Agia Efimia and as I've already done to touristy stuff last time I thought I'd share a food trip report for a bit of fun instead so here goes.
Arrived Sunday 22nd July at 11.30pm so unpacked and went to bed - no dinner this evening.
Monday 23rd - Spiros - The guy seemed very enamored to have a lady on her own to serve and was very attentive! It never matters where I eat on my first night when I'm in Greece as I always have the same thing. It lets me know I'm back. So I order mousakka. I have say it's one of the best I've tasted. Perfect consistency and served with a nice salad. For dessert? Well it had to be baklava of course! And boy this was certainly sweet and delicious with extra honey drizzled on top (it's a wonder I didn't give my self toothache!). I had a half litre of house rose wine and I'm sure it would have been fine if it was cold but sadly it was warm, very warm.
Tuesday 24th - Perasmo - I wanted aubergine with bacon and cheese as my starter however the waiter tells me "it very big, good for sharing, maybe too much for lady like you". Ah! OK I'll have the giant beans then; please followed by the swordfish steak. The beans were lovely, perfectly cooked with a sligthly spicy sauce. The swordfish steak was huge and so cheap! It came with rice and chips but I asked for vegetables instead and so I got a huge amount of brocolli, carrots and a side salad. Very nice. I had a half litre of red wine this evening and it was very tasty and only 3E too.
Wednesday 25th - Steki - tomato balls to start followed by Shrimp spaghetti. The tomato balls were slightly disappointing they weren't balls, they'd been flattened, fried and were a bit chewy. Thankfully the shrimp spaghetti saved the night. The sauce was perfect with shallots, peppers and tomatoes. The 'shrimps' turned out to be huge king prawns plonked on top of the pasta. OMG! It was the best s*x I had all holiday!!! They were delicious. Of course abandoning all table manners I made a big mess all over the table and myself peeling them but it was worth it.
Thursday 26th - Pergolas - this was one we'd missed last time as it's up a little street away from the harbour. I decided to be adventurous and order something I couldn't quite pronounce for starters. Well it turned out to be garlic mashed potatoes! Very, very garlicky mashed pots with lots of olive oil drizzled on the top (I had to use my napkin to soak some of it up). I like garlic but actually it was too much for me and I left some of it. For my main course I had stuffed tomatoes from the specials board and I have to say they were nicely cooked and very 'tomatoey'. The staff were really nice here and took time to talk to you so naturally I found myself being plied with dessert too! I chose pavani and would describe it as a cake version of baklava - yum, yum, my tum is so full!!
Friday 27th - Perasmo again - the staff there were pleased to see me again and made a fuss as I was a repeat visitor. I'm surprised they recognise people all the customers they get but I suppose they don't get many lone female diners. Anyway I had chicken soup and beef stifado tonight. The soup was very salty but the array of vegetables in it was great and it was clearly home made. The beef in the stifado was so tender and is probably the nicest stifado I've ever had; apart from my BILs (as he'll kill me if I don't say that!!)
Saturday 28th - well it's Saturday night and my last night so what's a girl to do? Go back for orgasmic prawns as Steki's? Try Finikas? I swiftly decided to give Posiden a miss this vist as they didn't seem to have anywhere near the choice of fresh fish it was famous for the last time I was here when I looked at the menu. OK I thought - if I was at home, what would I be doing?? "Beer and a pizza" my stomach cried! I wrestled with my conscience for a while (c'mon, you're in Greece for heavens sake! etc) but gave in when I saw someone getting a pizza and so I went into Captain Corelli's. The seafood pizza was very nice, although too much for me to eat on my own. The service was appalling though; I was still wiping my mouth with my napkin when the waitress was asking if I'd finished. She then ignored me when I wanted to pay the bill. One minute I felt like she couldn't wait to get me out and the next like I was invisible (and they weren't busy either - very strange). Maybe they don't care for lone diners, I don't know but I just didn't like the vibe of the place. Funnily enough I'd avoided this place last time and now I know my gut was right. Usually I'll linger over a drink after dinner but not tonight. Instead I retire to the bakery and have a delicous apple cakey thingy. Yum, that hit the spot.
So if you're off to Agia Efimia soon I'd recommend any of the places I ate in with the notable exception of Capt Correlli's. In my humble opinion, based on my experiences; the service was the best in Pergolas as it felt more personal and the food was the best in Steki and Perasmo.
Enjoy!
What's the name of the restaurant above Paradise Beach? From the harbour quay, facing the sea, walk left for about 400 metres? That's the one I've always enjoyed . . .
