I think we walked round the place you mentioned in Nafplion. We didn't do any swimming as it was too early in the season and not very warm. We should have stayed in the Ilion Hotel in Nafplion which looks lovely http://www.ilionhotel.gr/ but the online booking had not been correctly confirmed and as it was the early May bank holiday weekend the hotel was full. We had a worrying time at 10pm having driven from Athens, with no hotel to stay in! Fortunately the staff at the Ilion phoned round and found us a hotel in Tolon. One day we'll go back to the Ilion.
I also liked Chania - it's a few years since we visited Crete, we must return. Too many places not enough time !
My avatatar is the lion rampant from Scotland.
Thank you Spyros and Maria for yet more informtion on the Nafplion and Paralion Astrous area, it sounds as though it would be just what we are looking for
How would Nafplion compare with for example Parga, is it bigger, more / less touristy, more commercial etc

Compare Parga to Nafplion, is a smaller town in size and commercial, same touristy, but more beautiful scenery around. Nafplio except been bigger has more "night-life"
Personal opinion is that Nafplio is more Romantic to walk it, especially old parts of town.
Here is the official page of municipalty of Parga: http://www.parga.gr/dynamic/
Here is the official page of municipalty of Nafplio: http://www.nafplio.gr & http://www.nafplio.info (unfortunately, only in Greek)
Here are some more (private with commercial ads) sites for Nafplio: INVALID URL http://www.nafplio-tour.gr & http://www.nafplio-guide.gr
Overpass the commercials and have a look at pictures and infos
Long live Scotland
Spyros
From my point of view, Parga is more of a resort (and a nice one at that) and Nafplion more of a nice old town. I'd say it was worth staying a few days there, rather than a week - unless you hire a car and tour about. Lots of ruins to visit in that area. If you like Parga, I'm sure you'll like Paralio Astros. Either or even better, both, would make a good holiday.
We love Parga so Paralio Astros sounds ideal
I have been on the computer all morning trying to find out how to get there from Scotland, no luck so far as there are no flights going to Athens or Kalamata
It also appears to only be Manos that go to Paralio Astros, via Manchester but I am now trying to find flight only to Kalamata and try DIY
Spyros I have spent a long time looking through the web links you sent me and must say the pictures and information on http://www.nafplio-tour.gr/ is fascinating and Nafplio lokos lovely.
If we can get it sorted I think we will try and stay in Paralio Astros and use that as our base and hire a car to visit other areas.
The Manos picture has started a quest for me to get to Paralio Astros
When you are ready and settled down to where you are going for holidays send me a PM and I can send you additional infos regarding the area (History, monuments etc.) Do not forget the Pyramid I mentioned, very few Greeks know about it and even fewer tourists.
For Chania you need a full month holidays and you may not see everything.
Best experience in Chania is to know locals that will invite you in a local marriage! Believe me is something unforgettable.....lololol.......I hope you do not afraid guns as been in a Cretian marriage is similar to a Palestinian protest....lololol
Anyway, call me any time for infos

We also considered this place if you prefer a pool:

I was going to say that the pic reminded me of Parga having not been to the place it actually is
Also you asked where I was going? Corfu in 2 weeks time and looking forward to it
Like you, we are limited to where in Greece we can go due to our nearest airport. As we are in Plymouth, we find that Exeter is rubbish and we normally fly from Bristol
Dear kiltman-graham, regarding the picture on page 8 of the manos brochure, could it be Paleokastritsa/Corfu.
