Hi Nick,
To get you started my trip report is here (scroll down about half way) - http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=16727&start=80
I'd recommend the Radio City Apartments where we stayed for a first visit as Times Sq, Rockerfellar Centre, Fifth Ave shopping and Central Park are all close by. My review is here - http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk/reviews/united-states/new-york/manhatten/radio-city-apartments/ and their website is here - http://www.radiocityapartments.com Book early though as they are popular.
We booked our flights in January for a May trip.
Someone recommended this fold out map from Amazon and it's the best thing we bought in preparation for our trip - http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-York-Popout-Map/dp/184587613X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1195050497&sr=8-1
Hope that helps, if you any specific questions just shout.
Would like to have a 4/5 day shopping trip to New york, not a clue where to start with this, but have checked The guardian online and there hotels are cheap (Just looking for budget type travel inn etc)
Does anyone know the best flight deals from glasgow/edinburgh though???
Hoping to go around Feb/March 08

For budget accommodation I'd recommend radio city apartments. We found them good value for money - http://www.radiocityapts.com
For flights, you could register with airline network and they'll send you mails of cheap flights - http://www.airline-network.co.uk If you do a search on their site they'll tell you who flies from your chosen airport and then you can register for those deals. We went with Continental and I think they also go from Glasgow so check on their site.
hope that helps
Just got back from New York. We stayed in a really great value for money little hotel in Tribeca. It's called the Cosmopolitan, you can find a lot of reviews on tripadvisor. Average price is around $200 a night and the place is spotless and sits on top of the 1 2 and 3 subway lines for getting around cheaply. Dunno about flights from Scotland. I always book months in advance and take advantage of the airlines special offers. I usually spend a couple of days trawling all the airlines independently. Have a look at your local airport's website and you should be able to find out who flies from there

No problem, it was a pleasure.....going back to NY again at the end of June for a week for my daughters 21st. We're lucky enough to be able to take in the Pride march and the 4th July celebrations and also going back out to New Jersey to visit a friend, so, I should be able to tell you all first hand about even cheaper shopping within a bus ride from Port Authority.
off to new york on sat 1 march for 4 days hopeing to fit some shopping in somewhere .Been reading forums for last few weeks brilliant info, was wondering when useing travel chqs or credit cards,do i need to take id with me.Do not want to carry passport around if possable.
Very odd in NYC that they use signature pads and have often handed you the card back before you sign for your purchases. Unless they now have Chip and Pin technology in manhatten????
They dont even know what chip and pin is, my experience of it is, they never in all the time of being in nyc, they never even checked my sig
they never even checked my sig
so true! When we were staying with friends near San Francisco a few years ago we were out and I gave my hubby's card without realising and I signed it - they didn't even check!!
Some shops use chip and pin on debit cards here and in others you still have to sign.
hi guys got back last ngt had fantastic time feet still sore from all the shopping. Was never asked for id when useing c card only when useing t chqs.many shops had sign pads by tills but card was back in wallet before they asked me to sign.spent a fortune carnt want to get back

How did you find the staff in shops, all in a strop as usual, with the exception of the big department stores
Did anybody checked your cases on the way back to the UK? I am worried about paying any tax on the way back.
ps if your flyin with ba you are allowed 2 suitcases with weight limit of 23kg each
if your a smoker buy ciggies on the way out, on the plane on ba 200 were £16 we thought they would be cheaper in ny, was gobsmacked when brought our 1st pack of 20 for $9.00.
Where will be the best place to buy Abercrombie and Fitch? It's my friends birthday while I'm away and that's what they've asked for.
Thanks,
Sunaholic
