Hmm, i was a customer, back in my University days, but i havent paid off my student overdraft, so theyve closed my account  :(
Another priority of mine when i get back from Goa.

I know you can get stirling travellers cheques from the post office, but they charge 9 pounds on top of the amount.

just a word of warning, we have just returned and several people with Alliance & Leister cards were have trouble trying to draw money out of the ATM,s. We had a Nationwide card and had no problems. There are no ATM's in Baga (that I know of) but there are several in Calangute and Candolim.

there are several in between the two roundabouts, also if you go straight across the first roundabout (Candolim rd) there is one on the right just before after 7(opposite side of the rd).If you ask any taxi driver they will take you to one, wait and then take you to were you are going for the same money.

Thanks Sharon thats good to know. Glad everything was ok for your mum tho, she probably got a bit of a fright wondering what was wrong with her card.
Might revert back to taking cash with us and keeping it in the safe, might be less hassle.

we take Travellers cheques for insurance purpasses and use the cards when shopping again if you buy gold or anything of value then youll be insured with your card

Does anyone know what time the exchange places around the Baga / Calungute area are open until? I was planning on just taking English cash with me, we arrive at 4pm in Goa, and can imagine it'll be nearer 6 by the time we reach the resort - worried we wont be able to pay the taxi driver or have any money until the next morning. Also has anyone here with HSBC used their card abroad? - im now thinking maybe I should take it in case, do they charge commission on withdrawals? Also should I let them know before I go - the previous post has worried me now!!

Went in to travel agents today to pick up my sterling travellers cheques, and they said its 2percent commission, which means for 500 pounds its 10 pounds on top, but they said it was 15 pounds commission for 500 pounds.
Someone cannot do their maths right :think

Then the manager said you dont pay any commission with US Dollars, so after a few mins i thought, well they seem to be widely accepted in Goa, so why not.

But ive got a funny feeling i may not get as much for my money as if i took sterling cheques and paid the 10pounds commission.

i got 900 US Dollars for 505 pounds :cry

hmm, my math would have 985 dollars for 505 quid or 900 dollars for 462 quid, even with an adjusted rate that doesnt seem too good :cry
Reply
Exactly, im not too happy with the rate :(

Bad start to the holiday i think

I'm afraid you get stung every which way.

Firstly the travel agent sells you dollars commission free but at their "sell rate" ( greater £s per dollar than the inter bank rate)
You exchange them in Goa at their "buy rate" ( less Rupees per $ than interbank rate)
Back in the UK the Travel agent buy your spare ones back at their "Buy rate" (less £ per $)

If you had bought the sterling TCs you could have changed them back on return to the UK at face value although have to pay the upfront commission .

At the end of the day it's only a few £s each way and I wouldn't worry to much about it. You have got much more exciting things to worry about. :sun2

Have a fantastic holiday

To make it worse, ive worked out we only have around 50 pounds per day to spend.

Do you think this will be enough for 2 adults and a child?

i got 700 dollars at my bank yesterday for 485 euros (about 360 quid)

Silly question can you take it back? :que
