Hello Tom and welcome to the forums. :wave
Can I please ask that you do not use text style posting, as some of our members have difficulty reading if they are suffering from sight impairment.

Many thanks

Hi Tom, You will find quite a young crowd go to Sunny Beach, plenty of clubs, bars and restaurant. Drink is very cheap which suits the younger crowd and I can guarantee many a hangover.

Tom,

About 12 of us heading out on the 4th july for 2 weeks, also herd mixed reviews that it might not be lively enough for us but still booked up, staying at the palm court appartments so hoping there half decent, also wondering what the male/female ratio was out there? any info on the general holiday would be good

Hi Steve.
Think you will find your travel agent was right. Gone to Sunny Beach every year for the last 5 years and going back this year with my family as Sunny Beach, (and i believe Varna is the same), is a very family orientated place. There are some nightclubs in Sunny Beach but i have never been in them but i have never seen them being very busy and the locals do not put up with rowdy behaviour as they pride themselves in being a place where families can come and relax. There are lots of bars selling cheap drink and the restaurants have good deals on as well but i think if you are looking for a " typical club 18-30" holiday then you will not find it in Bulgaria. Hope this info helps you !

It is a family resort but have enough night clubs and the lap dancing variety to suit a group of lads. My advice though is respect the country and their people and enjoy yourselves. The Bulgarians are more tolerant and friendly than the Spanish authorities I have witnessed. One tip though is when you are legless at 5 oclock in the morning don't get a taxi they will almost certainly have the rest of your Leva. Even if you are sober enough to agree a price make sure it is in Lev and for all of you and not each!!

Don't change money in the streets, use banks or hotels and don't buy fruit of the street sellers and you should not get ripped off and will want to return again.

Have a good time lads :tup

and don't buy fruit off the street sellers

Why not, what's the problem with them?

Probably a reference to their prices in the resorts, Peter.

I recall one of my Bulgarian friends asking the price of a melon from a roadside vendor just outside Albena a couple of years ago - the reply nearly caused him to have a coronary! From memory, the price was around 4 or 5 times the norm in Varna.

Fortunately, I only take my fruit fermented......... ;)

But still a lot cheaper than the UK. As we know, the resorts are a sort of Disneyland with little resemblance to the real Bulgaria.

The price in Albena may well be 4 or 5 times the norm in Varna (I think the most expensive place in Bulgaria), but think of the price of a taxi to go there and buy, or the time to travel by bus.

Agreed. However, my friend made the comparison as he lives in Evksinograd, so had driven from the Varna area towards Obrochishte, a couple of kilometres outside Albena. ;)

He asked the price out of curiosity, just to see how much his fellow-countrymen were overcharging tourists, as he has been in the catering industry for many years. In this instance, there wasn't even the possible excuse of high site fees from the resort owners, as the stall was literally at the side of the E87 main road & well beyond the resort area.

When I refer to fruit sellers in the street I mean the ones that come up to you and ask you to try a grape. The next thing they are filling a bag with apples, cherries etc then ask you for 30 Levs!! This is in Sunny beach. I have witnessed this a few times and a fellow owner got ripped off even when I advised him to walk away!!

There are street sellers with official stalls that are reasonable though and have prices displayed up front. Best place around is Nessebur fruit market next to the supermarket New Nessebur. Sounds if I am obsessed with fruit now!!

I think its perfectly acceptable to be obssessed with fruit Feeky (especially in Bulgaria as it always tastes much better over there).

Bulgaria July 6th - as Baldur says the fermented fruit is very good also but it might be advisable to have the odd piece of 'real' stuff or you will need another holiday upon your return.

You are right Nels it does, probably because it has not been kept in cold storage for weeks and sprayed with anti-decomposing chemicals, or simply just organic.

Thats me done on fruit me old fruit. Lets talk about the fermented stuff that Baldur likes, cannot wait to get my hands on the red wine. I love the Bulgarian red wine and was surprised when we first went out there at how good it tastes even the bottles at the 3 - 4 Lev are easy to drink and good value.

I do buy it over here occasionally they have one from the Domaine Boyard? vineyards between £2.99 and £3.99 a bottle tastes as good and fruity as the Aussie stuff.

Thread gone totally off topic now apologies me and 5 mates just enjoy yourselves.

I'm over in August for 3 weeks, not sure what dates yet though as not booked flights yet.
