Hello to all!
I am a resident of Rhodes island, and I would like to ask you visitors for help, to rectify some environmental issues on the island.
One of my concerns, is that there is no sufficient wastemanagement system on the island yet.
In the last years some hotels pretended they were separating the waste, in preparation for recycling, just to throw it altogether into the same garbagetruck.
Meanwhile the municipality of Rhodes is starting some recycling efforts, but voicing your concerns, and demanding that the environment is respected, might speed things up, and help keep them on track.
My big problem and greatest concern, is that there is a site on the eastern coastline, a few hundred meters north of the LIDL supermarket, that is located on the road to Kalithea and Faliraki.
Because of the lack of an organized and controlled waste-management and recyclingsystem waste is collected there.
Plastic, electrical cables and tyres are set on fire in the open, and an uncontrolled incineration takes place.
This process releases toxic smoke, containing dioxines, that covers residential areas, as well as visitor accomodation in the vicinity.
The soil is heavily polluted, because this has been going on for years. Pollutants are also washed into the nearby sea.
Asking the authorities to take action, has no effect. The police send you to the firebrigade, and they often say, there is nothing
they can do. On at least one occasion a concerned citizen who called in to report a fire, was told that the fires are authorized!
Since tourism is a very important factor for the local economy, maybe your voice will be heard, because the authorities do not seem
to care about their own citizens' health.
Please help us by filling in a complaint with the Greek National Tourism organization. Tell them you demand respect for the environment, and do not accept your health being set at risk during your vacation.
I am not allowed to post the direct link here, therefore I will give a description, of how to file a complaint .
Ok:It is on the world wide web, the initials of the greek national tourism organization are eot and the country code is gr.
Then select contact, and on the next page there is a selection for complaints, on the right hand side.
I want to thank you for your attention. I am not a militant environmentalist or something. I am just a concerned father,
who gets mad seeing his children being exposed to toxic smoke, and the authorities just don't care.
Enjoy your holidays!
PS: Being a local, I am more than willing to answer your questions, and give you some tips.
I am a cyclist, and would love to go on a tour with anyone interested. Just PM me if you are there!
