I don't know the names of things, but do try all the vegetable based ones. Having holidayed on gulets for the past few years I have always got to try typical turkish dishes without knowing their names. They have the most wonderful tasty vegetables and fish and their use of herbs makes pasta, cous cous and such type dishes really tasty.
I have been to Greece a few times and the food in Turkey beats it hands down.
Turkish food is really lovely, a lot of it is similar to Greek food. If you fancy trying some authentic food don't go into the tourist restaurants try the more traditional places where the locals eat, the food is usually much better in these kind of places and also a lot cheaper, I don't know Marmaris so can't recommend anywhere.
I've often had my best meals by just asking the waiter for something traditionally turkish and then giving them the meat or veg that I want (just to give them at least something to go on) so I 'd say fish or chicken or lamb or just plain 'meat'. These types of meals have often been taken in large resorts right in busy places that are not done up all fancy and are not seafront -they've invariably been the cheapest as well.
It is a kind of meze as a vegetarian dish. It consists of eggplant stuffed with onions, garlic, and tomatoes, then simmered in olive oil. It is served cold like other dishes cooked with olive oil.
Börek are pies of flaky pastry stuffed with meat, cheese or potatoes.
Dolma is a name applied to such vegetables as grape leaves, cabbage leaves, and green peppers stuffed with spiced rice (Biber dolma).
You should also try "Alanazik", "Sac kavurma", "Tandir" and different types of "Kofte" as typical meat dishes.
Turkish Ravioli (Manti)
gözleme - Gözleme is a savoury Traditional Turkish hand made and Hand rolled pastry. Fresh pastry is rolled out, the thinly rolled out dough is then filled and sealed, then cooked over a griddle. My favorite is Spinach and Fetta Cheese
A Turkish meal usually starts with a thin soup (çorba). Soups are usually named after their main ingredient, the most common types being lentil, yogurt, or wheat (often mashed) called mercimek çorbası and tarhana çorbası.
Breads like...Pide (a broad, round and flat bread made of wheat) or Lavash
Levrek is a seafood speciality which is sea bass..or Cupra ( sea bream )
hiya, there is a local place opposite Tansas i think the name begins with a *k* it is no-frills sort of place but the food is lovely. our faves are Adana kebap and chicken sis..............
The kebabs in Turkey are nothing like you get here, they are very tasty and not at all greasy - Adana and Kofte are my personal favourites but you can get the usual sis and doner almost anywhere. Also try stuffed vine leaves for a snack, they are lovely. Turkish casseroles are to die for - ask for an Ottoman casserole. It is mixed meat (chicken, beef, lamb) cooked in the oven in a clay pot and is placed on a lighted stove at your table or try a kavurma which is meat of your choice (or you can have mixed) with peppers, onion, garlic and spices in a gravy and comes in an iron pan or on a sizzling skillet, depending on the restaurant. When I've had kavurma it is usually accompanied with rice, chips and salad.
Even in a bustling tourist-geared resort like Marmaris it is still easy to find authentic Turkish dishes. Generally, head towards the Armutalan area and you can't go far wrong.
Hope this helps.
Kittimus
mmmmmmmmm kittimus, you are making my mouth water
From what I'm reading the food sounds fab.
Much as I love local stuff, I'm a real sucker for pizza: so what's a Turkish Pizza? Better/ worse than the Italian versions?
Its called Pide, its gorgeous nothing like the piza we get here, not tomatoe based, its a flat thin base you can have what ever you want on, we like it mixed or cheese, have it with a salad, we find it hard to finish a full one, usually found in the Lokanta.
hi were off to hissoronu this july and love eating out are there any of these lokanta places here.or can you reccomend good restaurants to tru local food
ooh i love imam biyaldi too. i have always eaten it served hot though.i am so jealous you are off to hisaronu there are lots of fab restaurants there that serve allsorts of food and yummy fresh bread as an appetizer with garlic butter and tomato type dip!
Personally, I would try as many kebaps as you can whilst there: Beyti, Iştim and Adana are favourites of mine. I would definitely recommend them . Oooh and köfte - the turkish meatballs are lovely; have tried making them here but it's just not the same as being in Turkey. You should just et yourself to a turkish night because they're always cheap and you get the best mix of traditional turkish food; even their salads are to die for.
pida is nice for a change aswel, turkish pizza usually with feta cheese.
I never eat kebabs at home but one night a friend of mine got us a kebab while walking home he recomended the place and said i would like it so i tried it and it was that nice i got another one and the next night me and 2 girls from our apartment went there after a night on the town .. well we all know what its like after afew cocktails
