Won't drink it in Goa even when they are giving it away - dreadful stuff.

What do you recommend?

I must admit I always thought there was something funny about it. What additives are in it?

There used to be glycerine in it , as a preservative, but I don't know if there still is. Its gassy and gives me a bad stomach.

Aussie nectar anyday, although I never drink it in England, its made by S & N here and dreadful.

Like all foreign beers brewed in UK, nothing like original. Let's face it the German's win the beer race.

What's with the Glycerine? What purpose?

As I said too preserve , obviously against the heat. You used to tip the glass upside down and the glycerine would float to the top, or something like that.

I had one in my local Indian restauraunt a few weeks ago and it was just the same effect... gassy and a bad stomach.

I find Kings is ok if it's icy cold, but when its warm :yikes :yikes .

I've also had Kingfisher on draught and that was better, usually at Ingoes on a saturday night, much better than the bottles.

P.S. Must you go on about beer , I'm trying to lose my beer belly before I go to Spain next month :cheers :cheers

glycerol - used as antifreeze - in the manufacture of dynamite and a plactizer amongst other things is used as a preservative in Kingfisher :yikes Causes headaches.
Kings is not a bad choice as it contains little or no glycerol as it is produced in small breweries so it does not have to travel so far.

this is an article about Indian beer - scroll half way down the page.

Narial,

Thanks for that Narial, I have a sensitive stomach. I'll stick to Kings or any low glycerine beer or locally (goan) brewed beer. Any other 'safe' beer... I remember Belo down south.

You can still buy Belo in North Goa - have friends rarely drink anything else although not many bars now sell it. (they buy from bottle shop and drink on the balcony although have been know to sneak a cold one out with them in a cooler bag).
My hubby will drink Budweiser as he is ok with that - no headaches although he only ever drinks about 3.

Is the 'Bud' like here in UK? I'm not a great fan... tastes like bubblegum to me. When it comes to bottles, Becks, Budvar, Peroni taste like beer. Any of the draft equivalents always have that bad chemical super strength taste to them. I must admit I've been spoiled by beer by working in Germany for a while.

My favourite beer is draft Deuchars IPA (Only in Scotland) nae chemicals nae hangover. IPA ... India Pale Ale... can you get any IPA in India these days... McEwans IPA used to be a massive export.

Glycerine...... had a thread a while ago about this.
Shephered Neames of Bedfordshire brew kingfishers in UK , so I e-mailed their head brewer to ask about adding glycerine.
His reply was " I cannot see any reason to add glycerine to any beer".

Apparantly the best Kingfisher beer are the small bottles of 'Export'... kind of figures as it doesn't contain glycerine (I googled this).

OK Then, just to up the strength, what is "Haywards 5000"?

Electric Soup?

I read a mention of it on another thread... sounds lethal!

My Hubby is not a Kingfisher lover either, he mentioned once to a lad in a shack that he thought it was the kingfisher that was giving him an upset tummy, so the lad said well this is probably why, then demonstrated the Kingfisher bottle upside down in a glass of water experiment and yup rightly so all of the glycerine floats straight to the top of the glass.......disgusting....
here are a list of alternatives available in Goa.
Bello = Used to be the main beer !7 years ago ..still around and if enough of us ask for it by name it may become easier to get everywhere. 1st choice for us ( made in Goa)
Kings = smoother than kingfisher and without the neg. side effects
Haywards 5000 = Very srong, makes nice shandy!! 2 bottles are probably enough for most people..
Cannon 10000 = strong in flavour and in strength
Kings dark beer = for those who like an English bitter..pour then let it stand .
Royal Challenge = smooth, a bit like a carlsberg (ish)
but as he is a trooper and if non of the above are available....an Ice cold Kingfisher still quenches the thirst.
