I thought that this could be an interesting topic.
Most of us here are confirmed lovers of Goa and have been several times (probably an understatement for some! ). What made you decide on Goa in the first place - had you looked into the destination extensively, or did you stumble across it?
For us, we had some friends who had decided to go to Goa for Christmas and New Year. My OH came home having been visiting and said to me how did I fancy going to with them? I didn't know the first thing and thought 'why not' so we asked if we could tag along. I was so stressed before going that first time that I put my neck into a spasm and the doctor put me in a neck brace
We arrived pre-Christmas 2001, early evening to the madness of Dabolim , surrounded by loads of people who had been countless times and who were all very excited about being back. The queue for the immigration was long and slow, and all I could hear were people talking about their experiences, pig toilets etc!
Having negotiated immigration it was on to the baggage reclaim, my god we actually thought they were stealing the bags! Then off outside to the waiting porters and tour reps. Don't recall how much it cost us to get to the coach that year, not too much I don't think as we were all four of us rather paranoid by then!
We arrived at Sun Village after dark, one step into their foyer and the view of the Sun God looking out was enough to make us relax a little bit.
I remember our first day, emerging from the hotel to cries of 'come see my shop', 'taxi', 'cheap as chips' etc etc, we took one look and ran back in! That afternoon we took the hotel mini bus to Baga beach and once we had run the initial gauntlet we walked along the front, we decided to change our names and have a little fun along the way.
We were somewhat changed as we arrived back at the hotel that evening, much more relaxed and certainly getting into the swing of things. We had found a great shack (Spliffs!), had all been tatooed, massaged, Kingfishered etc (I had had a head massage to help my neck and my hair was all over the place!!)
I spent that first holiday, not really that sure of what I thought of Goa, but somewhere inside of me I knew I was coming back.
This Christmas is our ninth time, we have made some lovely friends over there during this time, people we met on our first trip and who never ask us for anything other than conversation and company. I'm just as excited and counting the days now, as I was the second time!
My friend at work visited Goa a couple of times, she kept telling me how cheap it was, how good the food is , how good the beaches were etc etc etc
I started looking at Goa on here and reading trip reports etc, then I decided, to hell with it let's give it a go, we loved it from the very first night when we arrived, our first meal was at Bernard's in Baga, we stayed at the Marinha Dourada, our first beach day was spent at the Oceanic shack , I came home and booked to go the next Xmas within a week, love the place
Word of mouth with me - a couple of friends had been travelling and ended up there so I then looked into it. For me = not touristy or commercial, no children, hot, cheap and somewhere a bit different.
Seriously, we had always planned to visit India, so did a lightening taster Golden Triangle tour, then a day in Mumbai and did the much needed R&R bit in Goa.
we liked it so much we went back for 5 days a few months later ( well- almost 5 days!)and didn't bother with any luggage. Hopefully I won't ever have to do that again!
Danny
that brought a tear to my eye
Definately sounds like magic Danny.
I knew I would- but the problems are my holidays don't tie in with the peak times.
We first went to Goa in November 1994, pretty much the first time it appeared in brochures as a charter flight destination.
I think it was 'sold' as an exotic destination costing not much more than a holiday to Europe.
It certainly came as a shock to a lot of people who had been used to the pavements of Benidorm and 'English Breakfasts'.
We'd had some pretty basic holidays to Turkey and Greece previously as well as a trip to the Far East so we were pretty open-minded about everything and absolutely loved it.
Anyway, we arrived at Dabolim airport, it was so hot and we were wearing jeans and boots, as it had been so cold back home. The airport ( shacks ) were in complete and utter choas. we had to wait ages to get through immigration and we were both sweating buckets, Robin kept giving me the look !!!
We finally managed to get through immigration and out of the airport and obviously got accosted by everyone trying to grab our bags !! We got on the clapped out mini bus, with me still trying to convince him that everything would be fine !!! LOL
Half way to the resort the bus broke down, that was it !! He was not happy, we had to wait about an hour and a half for another bus to come and rescue us. It was now not funny, and even I was starting to panic !!
Anyway, we eventually arrived at the Ronil Beach, and after being allocated our rooms we walked through the the back block past the pool, where a very friendly English man eating a bowl of ice cream in the pool said " Welcome to Paradise " To which Robin, you must be having a laugh ! ""
ANyway, after a shower and a change of clothes and a nice cool Kingfisher, things were looking up. and after the firat week, he was already talking about coming back. We had the best hoiliday ever and met some wonderful people, both locals and visitors and have been back every other year since. And are now looking forward to our 6th visit in January. Although we are now accompanied by our 2 children. It will be our daughters first time, she will be 18 months, and our sons third time, he will be 5. Over the years we have taken numerous friends with us, and my Mum, all of which have also had a fab time, and most of then have been back for more !!
Goa seemed much cheaper, and we found an all inclusive, so booked that.
The people at the beach shack we used (as the food in the hotel was a bit ropey!) suggested we should try the Holiday Inn next time as it was much nicer, and now 2008 here we go again for our 9th trip.
Thought I was going to an island off India though, didn't realise it was mainland! Still can't quite explain to people what the attraction of the place is. Just can't quite put my finger on it, except to explain that you have to go there to fully appreciate it.
Enjoyed Mauritius but it rains a lot, and after being couped up in the hotel, for three days due to a cyclone, the last trip said thats it.
I'd always wanted to visit India, my Hubby wasn't too keen, then my Daughter said, try Goa that's India for beginners
So my love affair with Goa, started five years ago, now we spend most of our holidays there
x lassi
We had been to various warm places in the winter including Christmas time but they were getting more expensive by the year, especially at Christmas. We saw Goa on a holiday programme 10 years ago and liked the look of it and it was cheaper overall than the Canaries at Christmas and also a lot warmer so we went for it and have been every year since. Christmas this year will be our 10th visit. We have taken other people with us at various times and recommended it to many who have also loved it. Although we have our moans about various things now like a lot of other people, I can't see us not going in the years to come unless it changes drastically. As soon as we set foot on Goan land we feel at home.
god bless you Fiona, Danny.
Wanted a Nov holiday for 2002 and were impressed with the price or £350 each compared to Caribbean, have not looked back although the first day or 2 were quite a culture shock as I was expecting Cuba 5 star all inclusive!! Soon relaxed and knew we would be back. Have been evry year adn are going back Feb 09
Flew out on British Caledonian, with a bad case of flu, arrived at Dabolim and were ushered into what looked like a cattle shed before we were allowed go to the main building. I just wanted to lay down and sleep, the flu being made worse by the heat. Finally made it to the coach and as we made our way north to Baga my spirits came to life as the scenery whizzed by to the reps fascinating stories of what to expect in Goa.
Wow what a beautiful place an assault on the senses; the vibrant colours the smells, the people, the food, the weather. Everyone around the pool would chat, the most common feeling from all was; 'This is the first place I've ever been where I've switched off and relaxed immediately'.
Within 3 days, having recovered from the flu, I knew I'd return, one couple was already looking for property to buy! I've been back once or twice a year since and am still in love with Goa.

My mother wasnt too keen though, she thought India wasnt exactly a tourist place, so we'd get ill, and she was adament she wasnt taking her toddler and teenaged daughter to India to get ill.
Anyway, her attitude soon changed, fell in love with the place.
We booked through teletextholidays , and got a 14nights in Jan for 300pounds per person.
We flew with an airline called Britannia, and we stayed at hotel Kamat ( i think this was the first hotel we stayed at)
